Service learning has been proposed as a way to create a meaningful environment for the language acquisition process (Weldon & Trautmann, 2003). As a pedagogical tool for second language acquisition the greatest benefit of utilizing service learning activities is that it creates connections to the target language community and provides authentic experiences for target language use (Long, 2003; Morris, 2001). This study explores the experience of service learning in schools today. Guiding this inquiry was the question, “How do service-learning professionals approach, implement, and perceive service learning, and to what degree do these elements affect how they collaborate with others?” To this end, I sought to learn more about how intentions and outcomes become translated by community service organizations, teachers, and students into actual service learning experiences. Based on individual interviews, the findings indicate the need to reconcile service-learning experiences with the ideals that inform them. Service-learning is an instructional method designed to cultivate interaction between students and their communities in order to improve the learning process. Although there is a wealth of information available pertaining to the development and implementation of service-learning in higher education, evidence supporting the impact of service-learning on general education outcomes at a community college is minimal. This study discusses the implementation of a service learning component in the first year college communication 101 level courses. Through the execution of a service learning component in college communication classes at a community college, student’s communicative competency and attitude toward community service is assessed. Using two different delivery approaches, a quantitative study assessed the pre-test and post-test of the standardized tools Communicative Adaptability Scale (CAS) and Community Service Attitudes Scale (CSAS). The Harbor Point Outreach Partnership is a community-university tutoring and afterschool youth enrichment program based on the work of students in service-learning classes, volunteers and work study students from UMass Boston and the Community. We are part of the UMASS Boston-Harbor Point Apartment Community Memorandum of Agreement. Our primary partner is the Walter Denney Youth Center and most activities take place at this location. We also partner with the Dever-McCormack School.

Volunteering and engaging in community service are effective avenues for personal and professional development, service participants actively contribute and to strengthen their communities. For people with limited vocational experience, national service can be part if a long-range employment plan. Service can allow VR clients to develop vocational skills, gain work experience, engage in career exploration build professional networks.

Service learning is pervasive in higher education today, with 31 percent of students at Campus Compact member schools engaging in service activities (Campus Compact, 2009) and universities’ missions and strategic planning documents increasingly aimed at developing engaged citizens. Service learning has many potential benefits for college students; among those benefits is the opportunity to develop and practice teamwork skills. The present paper describes the strategies used in a team-based service learning course to support positive team experiences for students.

The aim of this project was to raise awareness of the vulnerability of road users such as pedestrians and cyclists, in collaboration with the Garda Road Safety Unit. Since 2008 DIT students across disciplines have collaborated with Irish-Malawian charity Wells for Zoe. Students have spent up to three months in Malawi undertaking community-based projects on work placement modules, addressing the challenges facing local communities. In addition, DIT-based projects include pump design development and digital marketing projects.
