An Investigation Of Volunteer-Student Relationship Trajectories Within School-Based Youth Mentoring Programs, Thomas Keller, Julia Pryce

This prospective, mixed-method study investigates the development of school-based mentoring relationships using direct observations, in-depth interviews, and questionnaires from the perspective of mentors and students. A pattern-oriented analysis of qualitative data explores the diversity observed in the life-course of mentor-student relationships. Systematic variation in developmental trends across relationships revealed four distinctive groupings. Some relationships showed progressive improvement in strength and quality. Others started well but reached a plateau and did not become particularly close. A third group struggled throughout to make a connection. Finally, some relationships succeeded after a breakthrough to overcome their challenges. These inductively derived categories are corroborated …

Computer-based assessment of problem solving allows problems of both static and interactive natures to be posed. Examples of static problems are scheduling and logic puzzles in which all relevant information is available to the solver at the outset. Problems of an interactive nature, on the other hand, require exploration of the situation to acquire additional knowledge needed to solve the problem. Examples include discovering how to use an unfamiliar mobile telephone or automatic vending machine. This article reports the results of the Teacher Education and Development Study in Mathematics (TEDS-M) that are related to prospective primary teachers’ knowledge for teaching mathematics. TEDS-M was conducted under the auspices of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement with additional support from the US. National Science Foundation and the participating countries. In 2008 more than 15,000 future primary teachers, enrolled in about 450 institutions that prepare future primary teachers, were surveyed. The broad goal of this thesis was to examine the extent to which Food Technology in secondary schooling enables a pathway into the study of Food Technology at a higher education level. The study was guided by Technacy Genre Theory as it was assessed as offering the most contemporary approach in the literature for examining forms of technological knowledge through measuring the relationship between Human, Tool and Material/Ingredients of technological practice. The research found that Food Technology teaching in many secondary schools was significantly different to the genre practiced by the vast majority of professional Food Technologists.

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the development and implementation of a six-week cooperative learning intervention in a secondary school inclusive physical education class that included a student with a mild intellectual disability. The social interaction behaviours of this student with her peers were the dependent variables for analysis. Participants were a 14year old female student with a mild intellectual disability, 26 of her peers without a disability and the Head Physical and Health Education teacher. As part of strategies to improve dog and community health in rural and remote Indigenous communities, this study investigated preferences and impacts of dog health education programs. Semistructured interviews with 63 residents from five communities explored learning preferences. Though each community differed, on average yarning was preferred by most (68.4%) respondents, followed by visual (65.0%) and practical learning (46.9%). Text-based and computer/screen-based learning were important to 16.2% and 14.6% of respondents respectively. With paper-based visual and text resources, respondents reported a preference for locally made (28/36 or 78%) over mainstream resources. Twenty eight residents involved in the creation of locally …

The Australian Council for Educational Research (A.C.E.R.) is a not-for-profit organisation that works with Australian and international governments to develop and improve learning and assessment practices. In 2012 A.C.E.R. was contracted by the Victorian government to undertake research in the assessment of critical and creative thinking skills for students aged 8 to 18. Over 300 test items were developed for this purpose and these items were used to form a developmental scale for thinking. Behavior problems are common in toddlers and preschoolers. Richman, Stevenson, and Graham (1975) identified difficulties with eating, sleeping, toileting, temper, fears, peer relations, and activity as typical in this young population. While all young children should be expected to experience behavior problems as part of their normal development, an ongoing challenge in the field has been to determine when these “normal” developmental problems rise to the level of being considered “clinical” behavior problems (Keenan & Wakschlag, 2000). This thesis is an exploration of student peer mentoring programs which are increasingly popular in Australian higher education. The thesis investigates the motivations behind student peer mentoring programs offering transition-in support for students. The thesis investigates whether programs are run to benefit the students or to serve the interests of the institution. The thesis explores the current context of higher education in Australia and moves to a case study of the University of Wollongong. Interview data is used to analyse how staff and students navigate the institutional narrative surrounding student peer mentoring and its uses.
