This paper explores how one English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher assistant implemented RTI scripted ELA interventions at the primary (K–2) level. Using a variety of research analysis methods, the lesson plan record and detailed journal from the period in which the self-study was conducted were thoroughly analyzed. The analysis resulted in the identification of at what point I recognized a need for changes to the RTI plans for my ELL students, how specifically the RTI plans were modified to better accommodate my ELLs’ needs, and finally, what resulted from the modifications that I implemented. When a student is identified as a struggling reader, it not only affects their literacy development but learning across all content areas as well. If this is not recognized early on, this problem can follow them throughout their entire life. The research that led to this project demonstrated that relating learning to students’ lives outside of school helps students become more interested in the content. The research also stated that using language that students are more familiar with can assist with comprehension. This project was to create fictional stories for seventh grade science students that they could relate to. Twenty stories were created using non-fictional science that students would need to comprehend in order to answer content questions. Other content areas could create fictional stories so that students would by more engaged in the reading.

Attitude plays a large part in students’ literacy learning. Attitude affects motivation to learn and influences how students approach an academic task; in this case, writing. Self-efficacy, an aspect of attitude, is discussed as well. This study examined the relationship between students’ attitudes towards writing and their writing progress. Three first grade students from a private school in western New York were given a survey about attitudes towards writing, and three times they were observed writing in their classroom. The purpose of this research is to examine the attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions of college level students enrolled in an algebra course at the community college level. A survey was given to measure mathematical attitudes, beliefs, and math anxiety. Significant findings were found when looking at the difference in prior mathematics courses, repeating college algebra, enrollment status, gender, and age. By identifying the preconceived notions and beliefs that students have about mathematics and their academic ability, a teacher can use this knowledge to better meet the needs of students.

This thesis project addresses student epistemological values through technology and independent laboratories. The literature provides evidence that students show greater learning when they are prompted to reflect and develop these epistemological values (Davis, 2003 Demetriadis et al., 2011; Edelson & Kyza, 2005; Reiser & Sandoval, 2004). Furthermore, in conjunctions with research that supports prompting, other research advocates for the development and use of more modern technologies (Edelson & Kyza, 2005; Keengwe et al., 2008; Kuhn, 2001; Maddux, 1998).
