This geometry curriculum project was designed to be used during a high school summer school credit recovery program. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), New York State (NYS) Learning Standards for Mathematics, Science, and Technology (MST), and the most recent addition of the Common Core Learning Standards (CCSL) harbor the foundations for each lesson. The new Common Core Standards for New York State and the Framework for K-12 Science Education Standards have a main focus on implementing argumentative writing into each content area. Some form of argumentative writing has always been used in the science curriculum through the creation of a lab report. However, an argumentative lab report must contain a counterclaim and specific sources of evidence to be considered a real argument.

Homework is an integral part of any successful classroom. It is important for educators to be cognizant of which homework practice will be most effective and efficient for their students. This allows the educator to make better decisions regarding other aspects of their classroom including planning, pacing, and curriculum, among other things. This project compares two different homework practices employed in an adolescent mathematics classroom. While there is no significant difference in performance for either method, the benefits of both are discussed.

The purpose of this research is to examine the attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions of college level students enrolled in an algebra course at the community college level. A survey was given to measure mathematical attitudes, beliefs, and math anxiety. Significant findings were found when looking at the difference in prior mathematics courses, repeating college algebra, enrollment status, gender, and age. By identifying the preconceived notions and beliefs that students have about mathematics and their academic ability, a teacher can use this knowledge to better meet the needs of students.

This thesis project addresses student epistemological values through technology and independent laboratories. The literature provides evidence that students show greater learning when they are prompted to reflect and develop these epistemological values (Davis, 2003 Demetriadis et al., 2011; Edelson & Kyza, 2005; Reiser & Sandoval, 2004). Furthermore, in conjunctions with research that supports prompting, other research advocates for the development and use of more modern technologies (Edelson & Kyza, 2005; Keengwe et al., 2008; Kuhn, 2001; Maddux, 1998). As such, my culmination project consists of two virtual “lab notebooks.” These notebooks are made using Microsoft Excel® and consist of several quasi-intelligent macros that not only provide instant feedback, but also help guide students through the experimental process in a way akin to inquiry. “Checking Middle School Mathematics Assignments for Completion versus Collecting and giving Individual Feedback” is a thesis paper about the effectiveness of two different teacher methods of checking and assessing their student’s homework. The first method of checking is looking for completion of the assignment and the second method included collecting homework and writing individual feedback on the assignment and returning it to the students the following day. This research involved a suburban seventh grade mathematics classroom. It was determined, for this environment, that collecting and commenting on homework significantly increased student quiz performance scores.
