My Professor Is Hot! Correlates Of Ratemyprofessors.Com Ratings For Criminal Justice And Criminology Faculty Members, Richard R. Johnson, Angela D. Crews

RateMyProfessors.com” ratings of the easiness, helpfulness, clarity, overall quality, and “hotness” of 407 criminal justice and criminology faculty members from across the United States were collected. Data were analyzed to determine what faculty characteristics determined these ratings. Experience working in the criminal justice field predicted higher ratings, while years of teaching experience was predictive of lower ratings. After controlling for instructors easiness and “hotness” ratings, the instructors’ ascribed characteristics (such as race and sex) explained the greatest proportion of variance in clarity, helpfulness, and overall quality scores. This study explored the perception of English as Second Language (ESL) learners toward characteristics of effective ESL instructors. Specifically, this study examined the perception of thirty ESL learners in the Learning English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) Program at Marshall University and ten ESL graduate students studying Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Program in Adult and Technical Education (ATE) Department at Marshall University concerning what they perceive to be good qualities and characteristics of ESL instructors. The purpose of this study was to understand the methodologies authors in higher education journals used to obtain knowledge in their fields. This study looked at five peer-reviewed journals of higher education and analyzed the methods of research employed by the authors to help them answer their respective research questions. The methods of research are qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods. Additionally, this study examined the effects of author, gender, and academic rank on the selection of research methods.

This study examined articles published in the major peer-reviewed journals, either hard copy, web, or both formats, in five allied health professions from January 2006 to December 2010. Research journals used in this study includes Journal of Dental Hygiene, Journal of the American Dietetic Association, Journal of Nursing Scholarship, Physical Therapy Journal of the American Physical Therapy Association, and Radiologic Technology. The purpose of this thesis is to look at published and student-produced creative writing, more specifically, personal essays, through the lens of discourse analysis theories in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). From the analysis of these personal essays, this thesis provides pedagogical insight concerning the linguistic features that are prevalent in published and student personal essays. Although research has been conducted looking at academic student writing through the lens of SFL, little research has been conducted looking specifically at the elements that make up pieces of creative writing.
