Authentic Topics As Organizers For Instruction, Cassandra M. Moulton Dec 2012

Authentic Topics As Organizers For Instruction, Cassandra M. Moulton

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

Context based approaches including STS, STSE, and SSI instruction have the potential to promote student content knowledge, deepen student understanding of the nature of science tenants, strengthen student argumentation skills, and promote student motivation and interest in science. This capstone project is a compilation of forty meaningful, curriculum generated science topics, which can be used as a foundation for designing lessons that incorporate strategies to promote written or verbal argumentation in living environment courses. The topics were selected such that their implementation would not significantly disrupt the existing organization of science content within a district curriculum. The project demonstrates the ...

Use Of Computer Technologies In Supporting 3rd Graders' Literacy Development, Nicole M. Pensgen

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

Over the past decade school districts across the country have been trying to find ways to incorporate technology into the classroom. With the new initiatives of state and federal lawmakers, the push for this integration is greater now more than ever. As teachers across the nation try to fulfill this requirement, they are looking for ways to do this throughout the school day. Some of the ways educators are incorporating technology into their instruction is through the use of Internet websites and program software. While websites and programs seem like a wonderful idea to engage students in daily learning, there ...

A Compilation Of Literacy Strategies To Be Used In Science And Earth Science Units, Robert J. Atkinson Jr Dec 2012

A Compilation Of Literacy Strategies To Be Used In Science And Earth Science Units, Robert J. Atkinson Jr

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

Today in Education, reform and change have taken a center stage above all else to ensure that students are receiving the most beneficial education possible. With these changes come new Common Core Standards focused on making students more college and career ready when they graduate high school. This project tackles that problem, and presents many literacy strategies that can be used in the science classroom to make students more college and career ready through science. The project highlights many units of science, and breaks down the units into meaningful pieces. The content standards and common core standards, objectives, essential questions ...

Mathematics Curriculum Revised To Align To Common Core State Standards, Ashley Redino Dec 2012

Mathematics Curriculum Revised To Align To Common Core State Standards, Ashley Redino

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are the first set of national standards issued in the United States. Currently, all states are in the transition from implementing individual state standards to CCSS in ELA and mathematics. As the CCSS are being introduced and implemented into classrooms, educators are struggling to update or modify their current unit, based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards, to align with the new national standards. This research provides an explanation of the changes that will occur due to the CCSS in a seventh grade probability and statistics unit. An updated unit ...

Electronic Books And Emergent Literacy Development, Joseph G. Juzwiak

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

As we move further into the 21st century and beyond, the push to integrate technology into classrooms is becoming ever more apparent. Government is now moving towards making this integration a requirement through state and nationwide initiatives. As teachers scramble to become familiar with new and improved technological resources, many are turning to electronic books (e-Books) to meet their needs. While e-Books seem to be a logical source as they are essentially electronic versions of the paperback texts we already know and love, there seems to be a growing concern amongst researchers in the field as to their effectiveness ...

A Curriculum Project On Quadratics Aligned To The Common Core State Standards, Donovan J. Daily Oct 2012

A Curriculum Project On Quadratics Aligned To The Common Core State Standards, Donovan J. Daily

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

This project illustrates a process of designing curriculum for the study of quadratics in Algebra 1, in alignment with the Common Core State Standards in mathematics. The process incorporates the body of research on student conceptions of quadratics and available techniques and technologies for the enhancement of student conceptions. The Algebra 1 course trajectory recommended by the Common Core is analyzed in light of the existing research, unpacked into learning objectives, and restructured to address key conceptual roadblocks synthesized from the research. The resulting curriculum capitalizes on technology, rich problem contexts, and students’ prior knowledge of linear relationships in order ...

The Effects Of Discrete Trial Teaching On Students With Autism, Kristine Reardon Aug 2012

The Effects Of Discrete Trial Teaching On Students With Autism, Kristine Reardon

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

Discrete trial teaching (DTT) is one of the most widely interventions used on children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is an intensive and individualized instructional methodology that involves breaking skills into smaller steps and intensely teaching each step until mastered. DTT is known to many as being useful for teaching new forms of behavior and discrimination. The purpose of this study was to investigate if DTT is a useful intervention for increasing communication skills, acquisition, and academic skills in children with ASD, while decreasing their inappropriate behaviors. Data indicated that DTT effectively increased acquisition, academic skills, and communication skills ...
