Parental Effects On Academic Achievement, Gregory A. Chubb
Parental Effects On Academic Achievement, Gregory A. Chubb
Theses and Graduate Projects
Prior studies have shown differing opinions on whether factors such as the makeup of the family or the level of a parent's education have an effect on academic achievement of a student. This study looks at students at a small K-8 inner city school in Minneapolis to see exactly what aspects of parenting indeed have an effect on a student's academic achievement. Through the use of qualitative research it was found that high levels of parent-teacher communication and high expectations for both level of education and performance in school give the student the best chance of experiencing academic success. Strategies …

Transition Curriculum For Vessey Leadership Academy Leadership Application Project, Paul Terrence Gruber
Transition Curriculum For Vessey Leadership Academy Leadership Application Project, Paul Terrence Gruber
Theses and Graduate Projects
Research indicates students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) struggle with their transition from high school onward. Students who once received services, now on their own, are left poorly equipped for success. Studies show these students often have low rates of participation in post-secondary schooling, high rates of unemployment, and high rates of incarceration or involvement in crime. Though studies show these young adults struggle after high school, very programs have been implemented to improve their chances for success. The following Leadership Application Project (LAP) was developed in an effort to create a transition curriculum for Vessey Leadership Academy, a …
The Effects Of Procedural Choice As An Instructional Strategy On Locus Of Control: A Practical Curriculum, Seth Duane Baun
The Effects Of Procedural Choice As An Instructional Strategy On Locus Of Control: A Practical Curriculum, Seth Duane Baun
Theses and Graduate Projects
To investigate the existence of effective instructional strategies that would meet the learning needs of individual students as well as influence existing perceptions of locus of control, a research review and discussion are presented which discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of the methodology known as procedural choice. Inconclusive data and no readily identifiable examples of application resulted in the utilization of current research findings to develop a curriculum containing procedural choice based instructional strategies, designed to serve as both a potential measurement tool for future research as well as a practical, readily applicable curriculum for classroom use. Results from …

Development Of An Art Curriculum That Best Prepares Students For Careers In The Visual Arts By Conducting Interviews With Professional Artists And Designers., David James Willits
Theses and Graduate Projects
The purpose of this study is to examine ways to best prepare students in an art curriculum at a high school level who wish to go on to pursue a career as a professional artist or designer. In this study I have interviewed eleven professional artists and designers. I asked them a series of questions regarding the types of subjects that, based upon their experience, they would recommend be taught at that level. I have also asked them to identify those things that they feel teachers could do to encourage students to consider art or design as a career.

Efficacy Of A Secondary School Mentoring Program: Connecting Academic Achievement With Mentoring, Kimberly Olson
Efficacy Of A Secondary School Mentoring Program: Connecting Academic Achievement With Mentoring, Kimberly Olson
Theses and Graduate Projects
This study was created to determine if students at the middle school level would exhibit an increase in quarter grades in the areas of reading and mathematics throughout the year if they received mentoring from school personnel. In addition to student grades, attendance and behavior referrals throughout the year were also examined. This study involved fifty-two students in the study group and sixty-six students in the control group, all of whom attended the same public middle school in southeast Minnesota. Data were collected by school office personnel and was analyzed using the t-tests (to compare average means for analyzing academic …

Developing A Neighbor-Like Enviornment Between Home And School, Rebecca J. Butters
Developing A Neighbor-Like Enviornment Between Home And School, Rebecca J. Butters
Theses and Graduate Projects
Parental involvement is an aspect of education that will never go away. It is not a new concept, but continually remains a critical component of student success and achievement. There are many barriers to parental involvement and ultimately student success. Neither parents nor educators can do it alone. The goal of student success and achievement needs to be a collaborative effort from both sides. As a teacher of students with Emotional and/or Behavioral Disorders, developing a solid relationship with parents is crucial. In this study, parents of four students in an E/BD program were interviewed to explore their perspectives on …

Factors Of Effective Co-Teaching Between Special And General Educators, Jake Zisla
Theses and Graduate Projects
The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that lead to effective co-teaching relationships between special and general educators. With an increasing focus on inclusion of students with special needs into the general curriculum, co-teaching provides special education teachers an opportunity to provide services within that general curriculum, while giving general educators necessary support. The sfudy was conducted in the form of an initial survey with seven participants, as well as four in-depth case studies of special and general educators currently in co-teaching relationships. The results were analyzed along three major theme areas: collaboration, roles and outcomes. Compatibility, …
Teaming: Advantages And Implementation, Kevin Van Gheem
Teaming: Advantages And Implementation, Kevin Van Gheem
Theses and Graduate Projects
Teaching for four years, I have first-hand experience of what it is like teaching in two distinctly different types of classrooms. My first year was difficult as I was often alone in my room with little guidance or help from fellow teachers. The following three years, our school began to implement teaming and I began to see the benefits of it right before my eyes. This paper will examine some of the benefits for students, parents, and teachers. It will also discuss different types of teams or professional learning communities that can exist in a school. And finally, this paper …
Becoming Literate Through Art: Benefits Of A Literacy Infused Art Curriculum, Amy Wagner
Becoming Literate Through Art: Benefits Of A Literacy Infused Art Curriculum, Amy Wagner
Theses and Graduate Projects
The decline of literacy skills continues to be a crisis and a concern. It is important to emphasize that being literate goes beyond reading and writing. The definition of literacy can and should also include the ability to listen and speak. With this inclusion literacy becomes well defined as a form of communication. While art and writing are both forms of expression and thereby a means of communication, it is only natural that, because the two share the same goal, they should be studied jointly. The study and practice of art can enhance student's fine motor skills, cognitive learning development …
