Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Faculty Publications

In his editorial, the author challenges urban mathematics educators to institute as the primary goal for the community of mathematics educators the cultural transformation of the discipline of mathematics from the psychologically brutalizing discipline of stratification into the psychologically humanizing discipline of freedom.

Towards Virtual Information Literacy: Academic Librarian Integration Into Teacher Education Distance Learning Programs, Brenna Helmstutler Jan 2009

Towards Virtual Information Literacy: Academic Librarian Integration Into Teacher Education Distance Learning Programs, Brenna Helmstutler

University Library Faculty Presentations

Having convenient, instant access to electronic library resources in academia is excellent as research can be conducted literally anywhere and at any time; however, a level of user self-direction is required for optimal results, creating the need for librarian interaction to guide the user towards acquiring this self-direction most effectively. As more institutions add online degree programs, it is essential that librarians are integrated within so that participating students have access to the same (or at least, equivalent) library resources and services as those who are on campus, and also develop sound research skills for information literacy acquisition. Although librarians …

Beyond Heroes & Role Models: Using Biographies To Develop Young Change Agents, Laura E. Meyers, Teri Holbrook, Laura A. May Jan 2009

Beyond Heroes & Role Models: Using Biographies To Develop Young Change Agents, Laura E. Meyers, Teri Holbrook, Laura A. May

Early Childhood and Elementary Education Faculty Publications

Reading, writing, and discussing biographies provide unique opportunities for teachers and students. Critical thinking can be developed through questioning, predicting, and analyzing various biographical mediums--texts, photographs and illustrations, book reviews, websites, films, news articles, etc.--to learn more about an individual's life experiences and choices. Decision making skills can be enhanced when students juxtapose their perceptions of heroes and role models to that of a change agent, even considering how their own life experiences and choices may be contributing to larger actions of change. In this article, the authors discuss six biographies that could be used with young people in the …

Teachers Reflecting Differently: Deconstructing The Discursive Teacher/Student Binary, David W. Stinson, Ginny C. Powell Jan 2009

Teachers Reflecting Differently: Deconstructing The Discursive Teacher/Student Binary, David W. Stinson, Ginny C. Powell

Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Faculty Publications

This session explores the ways that practicing teachers came to reflect differently regarding the discursive teacher/student binary during a graduate-level course entitled “Mathematics Education within the Postmodern.” Using Dewey’s concept of reflective thinking, as well as Foucault’s discourse and Derrida’s deconstruction, we show how the course provided new suggestions for the students as they continued their journey of becoming teachers. Through interweaving comments written by the students with concepts borrowed from postmodern philosophers and theorists, we illustrate how the teachers began to understand that teachers and students might indeed be described differently in the postmodern.

The Proliferation Of Theoretical Paradigms Quandary: How One Novice Researcher Used Eclecticism As A Solution, David W. Stinson Jan 2009

The Proliferation Of Theoretical Paradigms Quandary: How One Novice Researcher Used Eclecticism As A Solution, David W. Stinson

Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Faculty Publications

When a doctoral student plans to conduct qualitative education research, the aspect of the dissertation that often becomes problematic is determining which theoretical paradigm(s) might frame the study. In this article, the author discusses how he resolved the quandary through eclecticism. The author begins by describing briefly the purpose of his dissertation study, providing a justification for eclecticism in the selection of theories. He follows with a description of the three theories— poststructural theory, critical race theory, and critical theory—that framed his study and discusses briefly the methodology employed. The author concludes with a discussion of likely objections of his …

The Social Studies Curriculum In Atlanta Public Schools During The Desegregation Era, Chara Haeussler Bohan, Patricia Randolph Jan 2009

The Social Studies Curriculum In Atlanta Public Schools During The Desegregation Era, Chara Haeussler Bohan, Patricia Randolph

Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Faculty Publications

This historical investigation explores how teachers, students, and education officials viewed the social studies curriculum in the local context of Atlanta, and the broader state of Georgia, during the post-Civil Rights era, when integration was a court-ordered reality in the public schools. During the desegregation era, Atlanta schools were led by Atlanta Public Schools (APS) Superintendent, Dr. Alonzo Crim. Brought to Atlanta as part of a desegregation compromise, Dr. Crim became APS's first African American superintendent. In particular, the authors investigate how national social studies movements, such as Man: A Course of Study (MACOS), inquiry-based learning, co-curriculum activities, and …

"'Proof-Revising" With Podcasting: Keeping Readers In Mind As Students Listen To And Rethink Their Writing., Ann Davis, Ewa Mcgrail

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

This article describes a process for proofreading with podcasting for elementary and middle school bloggers. The podcasting technology engages two senses, hearing and seeing. In addition, the audio and text are merged through the voice of a reader, rather than that of the student. Proofreading in this way is used not as a final step to check primarily for errors but rather as a more complex literacy that includes writing, higher-order thinking, and learning to identify with the audience and their needs as readers. We called this process ‘proof-revising’ to distinguish how it evolved from basic proofreading to a complex …

Taking Risks In Task-Based Teaching And Learning, Gertrude Tinker Sachs Jan 2009

Taking Risks In Task-Based Teaching And Learning, Gertrude Tinker Sachs

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

Further to Tinker Sachs (2007), this paper reports on the development of taskbased learning and teaching (TBLT) within a cooperative learning (CL) and teacher action research context. The three-year longitudinal project involved 12 teachers and their students from 3 government primary schools in Hong Kong. When innovative ways of teacher professional development in language teaching are fostered, a great deal of teacher and learner risk-taking is necessary for teaching and learning success. This paper reports on the risk-taking behaviours of teachers and students as they engaged in TBLT and CL. Data were drawn from teacher and learner interviews, questionnaires, lesson …
