The Gamma Chapter Of Alpha Phi: 1900-2000: A Demographic And Cultural Study, Laura Parks

Student Research

Throughout the years, DePauw University has proved to be a fertile ground for the development of Greek life. A Few of the first fraternities were founded in this soil as well as many of the early chapters installed on this campus. The environment conducive for Greek life inspired the women of Alpha Phi to pursue the idea of establishing a chapter on DePauw's campus. The chapter, founded in 1887, has undergone many changes through the years. With six original women, the membership has since grown to over 100 women in the collegiate chapter today with alumnae across the country. The …

General Education Course In Intuitive Quantum Physics, Michael C. Wittmann

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

This project improves student conceptual and epistemological knowledge in the sciences while developing a template for formative assessment in a general education course at the University of Maine. A general education course in Intuitive Quantum Physics is being created in which non-science students learn quantum physics through simple observations, basic logical reasoning, and graphical analysis. Materials from three proven curricula are being adapted to include explicit discussions of epistemological issues. The three curricula (developed in part with NSF funding) that are being adapted to create the Intuitive Quantum Physics course include Activity-Based Tutorials in wave mechanics, New Model Course in …

Examining The Role Of Reciprocity Within The Formative Assessment Process Alongside Prospective Teachers, Juliann M. Kaftan Dec 2007

Examining The Role Of Reciprocity Within The Formative Assessment Process Alongside Prospective Teachers, Juliann M. Kaftan

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This self-study examines the role of reciprocity within the formative assessment process in order to explore preservice teacher understandings of the complexities of the teaching/learning/assessment process. I study myself in relation to my practice in order to provide an account of how my knowledge of teaching is lived out in practice. Through the various chapters, I give the reader glimpses of my background and the particular situations that draw out theory/practice relations. The conceptual framework gives the reader an idea of the assumptions that frame my thinking. In particular, I articulate knowledge as experiential and perception as multi-layered. Self-study methodology …

Reading Comprehension By People With Chronic Aphasia: A Comparison Of Three Levels Of Visuographic Contextual Support, Aimee R. Dietz

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This repeated measures investigation evaluated the impact of three levels of visuographic context—(a) photos of high-context scenes, (b) photos of low-context scenes, and (c) no-context—on the reading comprehension of narratives by people with chronic aphasia. The researcher defined high-context scenes as photographs in which people interact with each other, the natural environment, and the central action of the scene and low-context scenes as photographs with no central action and limited-to-no interaction between the people and the natural environment. Participants included 10 medically-stable adults with chronic aphasia and concomitant reading comprehension deficits. The participants read three different narratives, each presented with …

The Need For Choice And Control: Preparing The Digital Generation To Be The Next Generation Of Teachers, Brian Ferry, L. Kervin, L. Carrington, K. Prcevich

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

In this paper we describe the design of an online classroom-based simulation, ClassSim, developed to enable pre-service teachers to interact with a virtual classroom environment as they assume the role of the teacher. The project built on the research of Herrington and Oliver by investigating how the design elements of authentic learning environments they identified can be operationalised in an on-line simulation of a classroom. The aim of the simulations was to progressively develop preservice teachers' understanding of the complex decisions needed to plan and implement reading, writing and spelling lessons for lower primary children. With the support of a …

Corporate Governance: The Revival Of An Academic, Professional, And Policy Field, Juan P. Artero Dec 2007

Corporate Governance: The Revival Of An Academic, Professional, And Policy Field, Juan P. Artero

McGannon Center Working Paper Series

This paper explores the basic concepts of corporate governance in relation to its intellectual foundations and historical development. The basic assumption relies on the fact that the reinforcement of corporate governance as an academic, professional, and policy field is a consequence of the many corporate failures that have occurred in recent years, mainly since 2002. Most theoretical developments for this new moment in history have been borrowed from the same academics and practitioners that reflected and worked on the field after the 1929 economic crash, with deep origin on general social scientific research. In addition, corporate governance is growing as …
