Teaching Hausman And Willig Using Mathematica, Matt Bogard
Teaching Hausman And Willig Using Mathematica, Matt Bogard
Library Presentations, Lectures, Research Guides
Analyzing consumer welfare from observable data, or empirical demand functions has been a very controversial issue in economics. One metric often used is deadweight loss from a tax or price increase. A classic debate in economic history regarding the appropriate methodology for measuring deadweight loss involves two papers published in the American Economic Review by Jerry Hausman and Robert Willig. In ‘Consumer’s Surplus Without Apology’ Willig contends that the error in approximating deadweight loss using the observable Marshallian demand curve is small for small price changes and an acceptable practice. Hausman argues in ‘Exact Consumer’s Surplus and Deadweight Loss’ that …

Albertsons Library at Boise State University has been slow to move into the ebook arena for a variety of reasons including the inadequacies of simultaneous user models and the uncertainty of ebook technology. However, the most significant question for BSU has been usefulness of ebooks to their patrons. Are ebooks a passing fad or are they the answer to improved access to information? In January 2006, BSU selected a small group of technical books in an electronic format via the ProQuest Safari Tech Books Online database. This session will discuss the rational behind selecting technical books as an introduction to …

The Rhode Map To Success: The Exploratory Student’S Guide To Choosing An Undergraduate Major, Kaitlin O'Hara
Senior Honors Projects
Entering college without a major has become more prevalent over the past decade. Colleges and universities are opening their arms to the undecided, providing them with extensive resources and assistance to help direct them to a major and, ultimately, a career. The University of Rhode Island has admitted an increasing number of undeclared incoming freshmen over the past few years. This fall semester, approximately fifteen percent of freshman class did not declare a major prior to starting classes. This percentage of students represents a very special group at the University College. The undecided academic advisors at the University College developed …

Teaching Outbreak Preparedness In The Emergency Medicine Clerkship: An Innovative Approach, Larissa S. May
Teaching Outbreak Preparedness In The Emergency Medicine Clerkship: An Innovative Approach, Larissa S. May
E-Learning Modules
Clinicians should be competent at contagious disease outbreak detection and management. Given the threat of emerging infectious diseases and biowarfare, there is a need to develop instructional methods on these topics. We have created a case-based exercise addressing sentinel case recognition, reporting, and containment. The workshop, conducted for medical students during their emergency medicine clerkship, incorporates the core competencies of systems-based practice, practice-based learning, and patient care. The workshop is held in a hospital conference room with the availability of internet, telephone, and other resources, simulating "real life." A hypothetical case of Ebola presenting to an emergency department is outlined. …

Improving Instruction For Teacher Candidates In Classroom Management And Discipline Issues, Scott Watson, Michelle Goodwin, Beth E. Ackerman, Karen L. Parker
Improving Instruction For Teacher Candidates In Classroom Management And Discipline Issues, Scott Watson, Michelle Goodwin, Beth E. Ackerman, Karen L. Parker
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The effective teaching of classroom management and discipline skills remains a major challenge for teacher educators in the 21st century. In some ways, instruction and experience with these issues should be the priority for all education programs. Why is this? The answer is simple. If teachers cannot manage their own classroom and control their students, they cannot effectively teach. All of the subject matter knowledge that teachers expect to impart on their students is useless if their students cannot or do not listen and participate in learning activities. The major purpose for this presentation is to provide research-based suggestions on …

Using Digitized Primary Sources From The Library Of Congress's American Memory Collection To Enliven Nursing Issues And History Curriculum (Multimedia Presentation), Catherine Tymkow, Shirley Comer, Paul M. Blobaum
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
Background: A cohort of faculty from Governors State University were chosen to receive technology training and develop web based education projects incorporating digitized primary sources from the Library of Congress' American Memory Collection in May 2006. Using a constructivist framework, three web-enhanced projects, which are works in progress, were developed to illumine and enliven nursing's history for today's learner. These projects utilize digitized primary sources, which are defined as documents or other sources of information created at or near the time being studied. Use of primary sources is not common in nursing and represents a new approach to enhancing nursing …
