I Wonder Who's Using Us Now: Hurricane Katrina's Influence On Use Of Special Collections At The University Of New Orleans Library, Florence M. Jumonville
The Southeastern Librarian
On the afternoon of Friday, August 26, 2005, a student approached the reference desk at the University of New Orleans (UNO) library’s Louisiana and Special Collections Reading Room and returned the book from the UNO Faculty Authors Collection that he had been perusing. It was a routine transaction, and department personnel had no inkling that this one would be the last that their department would make for more than four months. Weatherwatchers, however, already were aware of the threat posed by Hurricane Katrina, which was then churning in the Gulf of Mexico. Television broadcasts that evening brought alarming forecasts which …

The growth of the Internet and the increasing application of electronic mail in many aspects of business and educational research have urged researchers to reach different individuals across geographical borders with an obvious reduction of costs and time. While the use of email surveys in educational research, as this paper mainly argues, offers significant benefits to researchers in collecting data, more awareness of ethical codes of conduct and culture of net-users should be insisted throughout the research process to enhance validity and to minimize physical or mental harm that may cause to the researched participants of different ethnic and socioeconomic …

The aggressive age of assessment and accountability to which the American public school system belongs, belies the dichotomy, or disparate and passionate views of how to appropriately determine growth or success of learning for our students. The differences are startling; polar opposites of conception and ideal, and controversial, with educational professionals at odds with policy makers and the general public. At issue, or the core of this debate, is the question of what is the most effective way in assessing our schools and the children within them? Is there really one way to assess or determine success and are we …

The first-responder and professional-rescuer training materials and training programs consider lifeguards to be first responders in emergencies (Aehlert, 2005; American Red Cross, 2001). This article asks readers to consider whether our agency lifeguard-training programs reflect a philosophy that truly view and prepare lifeguards as first responders. If not, I challenge readers to consider whether we should alter our hiring, staffing, and in-service training procedures at aquatic facilities based on the scope and need for providing adequate emergency care at those facilities.

A Research Into The Problems Of Students Not Completing Homework Assignments In The Middle School: The Case Of Weaver Middle School In Bibb County, Georgia, Ty Treadwell
The Corinthian
I have been teaching middle school students for three years and one of the most discouraging problems I face is that my students do not consistently complete homework assignments. In this Action Research report, I am attempting to uncover reasons why my students do not complete homework regularly. I also look at ways to motivate them to do their homework, and possible teaching strategies to implement that will encourage more consistent completion of homework. I conclude that students do not do or complete their homework for the most part because they are not organized due to lack of motivation. I …

Promoting Student Activism Among Our Millennial Students, Brian E. Cole
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
This comprehensive literature review investigates student activism to provide a generational backdrop to the varied types and methods of college student activism in the Millennial generation. After the explosive student uprisings of the 1960’s and 1970’s, it would be easy to deduce that in the absence of such high profile activities, student activism post-1980 is non-existent or insignificant. However, current literature suggests student activism is alive and well, although it often looks quite different. This makes student activism among Millennial students as important and worthy of study as any earlier generation. But to understand recent activism, one must be aware …

You Don’T Always Get What You Want: Lessons To Be Learned From The Demise Of Maine’S Local Assessment System, Rebecca H. Berger
You Don’T Always Get What You Want: Lessons To Be Learned From The Demise Of Maine’S Local Assessment System, Rebecca H. Berger
Maine Policy Review
The recent repeal of Maine’s local education assessment requirement was met with mixed reactions ranging from relief to outrage. That there were such differing responses points to the fact that “assessment” in education is understood in diverse and sometimes contradictory ways. In this article, Rebecca Berger looks retrospectively at how the problems associated with implementing Maine’s local assessment system (LAS) were caused by a lack of understanding of important aspects of assessment as it relates to standards-based reform in education. Using examples from her case study of one Maine school district, Berger notes three areas of ongoing concern: lack of …

Teacher educators recount their personal experiences related to testing and assessment. Through the examination of these experiences stemming from collegial conversations, the individuals have come to better understand the issues and challenges their university students, preservice and inservice teachers, will face in their classroom settings. Along with theory and research, the realities encountered by these individuals become “course capital.” The content of their current and future university literacy courses and assessment courses reflects their renewed emphasis on responsive and child-centered instruction as opposed to the untoward focus on testing.
