This study was an attempt to determine if a change in teaching methodology would have a positive effect on the outcome, as measured by a chapter test, of an algebra class. The research involved a pretest-posttest control group design of two sections of an eighth grade algebra class. The control group received the standard instructional practice, known as the "direct method", while the treatment group received the same "direct method" and additional "constructive" methodology in the form of manipulatives and group reading of the subject matter. The purpose of this project was to develop a family mathematics night program that would encourage parental involvement in mathematics education thus, enhancing student achievement in mathematics. The primary goal of dropout prevention programs is to prevent as many students from leaving school as possible. The percentage of individuals leaving Nevada schools without obtaining a regular diploma is among the highest in the nation (Schmidt & Barr, 2004, p. 9). The primary methodology employed in this project was Content Analysis (Leedy & Ormrod, 2005). In Content Analysis, the researcher identifies specific examples of selected characteristics in similar documents defining the characteristics more clearly. This is an investigation sought to identify developmentally appropriate teaching methods in drawing instruction. This study assessed the different methods in teaching the fundamentals of drawing to two groups of 5th grade classes at Our Lady of Las Vegas School in Las Vegas, Nevada. The "control" group was taught by the drawing methods presented by Edwards (1979), while the "experimental" group was taught employing standard methods. Their drawing skills were assessed using a rubric that measured their success in the following four dimensions of drawing: perspective, proportion, value and composition. Quantitative research methods were used including observations and tallies of reading rates, data compilation, generation of scatterplots, and descriptive statistical analysis of the results. The research focused on observations of 69 fourth graders from two fourth grade classes in a private parochial elementary school in Las Vegas, Nevada. The students each read a 198-word passage to measure oral reading rate. A positive relationship between oral reading rate and reading comprehension was then determined. As a result, teachers may be able to use an oral reading rate test to design curriculum before the Terra Nova achievement test is administered in September. …

The need for increased geographic literacy in an age of globalization and the decline in geographic literacy among people in the United States have created an educational challenge that should be addressed aggressively in the K-12 curriculum. One roadblock to improvement of geographic instruction is the subject centered instruction designed to accommodate standardized testing. Differentiated instruction (DI) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) are philosophies that serve as teaching methodologies that address the needs of diverse learners in the regular classroom. Furthermore, DI can be used to engage students in instruction through different modalities, appeal to different interests, and use varied rates of instruction along with varied degrees of complexity. In the following study, the author describes the effectiveness of teaching drama techniques to English as a Second Language high school students. A review of literature is provided that demonstrates how integrating ESL teaching strategies with those of drama enhances language acquisition. The end product of the study is a 1 semester drama unit which meets standards of learning established by the Colorado Department of Education. The research project examines how courses in speech communication tend to affect students. The author specifically considers how courses in speech affect student test scores, understanding in other core courses, employability in the work force, preparation for college, and self worth. Prior studies, testimonials, and an informal study from the 2004 National Forensic League National Tournament are used to support the case. This author used knowledge gained from a review of literature, best practices, and personal teaching experience to create a resource of 30 integrated mathematics activities for second grade teachers. Each of the 30 activities contains stated objectives, standards addressed, materials needed, detailed instructions, applicable worksheets, and a suggested scoring guide. These activities are designed for second graders and are adaptable for first, third, and special needs students. The activities in the resource correlate with the Colorado Model Content Standards for Mathematics as well as CSAP preparation activities.

Current research suggests that middle school aged boys are not involved in reading as much as middle school aged girls. Researchers have identified several reasons behind the findings. The first possible reason is a lack of reading interest from boys. The second possible reason is a lack of age appropriate material targeted toward the interests of boys. The third possible reason is an influx of gender-neutral reading material. This project attempts to bridge the gap by providing middle school boys with an age appropriate manuscript. The project also includes a classroom guide which provides teachers with ideas and reproducible materials.

The purpose of this project and the resulting Power Point presentation was for the author to identify from the research literature effective instructional strategies which resulted in the increased educational performance of the English Language Learner (ELL), and the special education student. An Immigrant English Language Learner (ELL) encounters many new and different experiences when they enter high school. This transition can lead to a sense of loneliness and isolation if the student is not comfortable. However, if ELLs feel welcomed, valued, and connected to others, the high school experience can be a positive one. This research project was designed to use a personal presentation learning tool as a way to establish a needed social connection between ELLs, school staff, and native speaking peers as a way to enhance personal relationships, promote cultural understanding, and connect students to their new setting.

A teacher in-service presentation was developed that sought to improve the education of students with disabilities through teacher communication and education about pertinent strategies. The program presented is titled "Agreed To Succeed". The "Agreed To Succeed" program is based upon the three I's: (a) initiating communication, (b) integrating learning, and (c) incorporating strategies. In the presentation, teachers were offered an approach to opening communication among teachers, students, and staff. Additionally, strategies were presented to encourage teachers to modify curriculum for their students with disabilities in their classrooms.

In this paper, the author identifies characteristics of students in transition, the transition itself, and successful transition programs. The use of looping, the practice of students and teachers remaining together for two years or more, has increased over the past decade. This study investigated the achievement of students enrolled in both looping and traditional classrooms at Holmes Middle School (HMS) on the Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP). Test scores for the 183 students enrolled in seventh grade at were analyzed utilizing an unpaired t-test to determine if there was a statistically significant difference between the scores of 95 looping and 88 non-looping students. The effectiveness of an intervention for English language learners (ELLs) at risk for reading problems is described. The treatment group was made up of 10 first grade students who were determined at risk for reading difficulties and were provided an intervention of supplemental reading instruction throughout the school year. Their scores on the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS; Good, Kaminski, Laimon, & Johnson, 1992; Good, 1994) were assessed for phoneme segmentation fluency, nonsense word fluency, and oral reading fluency prior to and following intervention.
