This is a review of transformative learning (TL) since 1998 involving 40 empirical studies. Findings include trends of less emphasis on identifying transformative experiences in different setting, and more about fostering TL and better understanding the nature of critical reflection, relationships, a perspective transformation, and context. Also, research designs are becoming more sophisticated.

This study looked at how women experience the destabilizing effects of change when the flow of their lives is disrupted, either intentionally or unintentionally? The life histories of four women reveal themes of opportunities for re-forming identities, cultural aspects of the self which create meaning for the self and one’s place in the world, and historical factors and positioning within temporal parameters.

This qualitative, multiple case study analysis found that faculty use hybrid courses to facilitate learning by creating a continuous learning loop between the in-person and online environments. Connecting learning in both environments helps students acquire and integrate new knowledge, extend and refine knowledge, and use knowledge meaningfully.

A new approach to the lifelong learning paradigm is required to include transnational learners. This research shows that migrant workers, who by definition belong to multiple communities, seek learning experiences to sustain and enhance capabilities as contemporary workers. This qualitative cross-case study examines how age-related differences are manifest and managed within online groups of adult learners. The findings suggest lack of traditional instruction in the PBL groups created a vacuum of authority, which they were unable to satisfactorily resolve.

A qualitative research approach was employed with twelve participants from a purposeful sampling of four historically themed museums. In Canada, current federal learning-and-work policy is focused on individual learner-worker development using an iteration of lifelong learning as cyclical. Increasing numbers of disenfranchised young adults are resisting participation in such learning. In this regard, I consider the predicament of young adults in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. To help us think about adequately addressing the dislocation they experience in life and work, I offer a Freire-informed vision of a critical social pedagogy of learning and work.
