Ten university graduate students created electronic case studies describing the learning of struggling readers as a part of this study designed to yield insights about literacy education and the efficacy of electronic case study development. A variety of data, analyzed through a qualitative content analysis, revealed understandings regarding participants' perceptions about themselves as learners, ideas about their influences on students, and revelations about literacy instruction. A final theme revealed that, as participants reflected upon their own learning; they also voiced a commitment to literacy teaching that went beyond their personal classroom settings. The Teacher's Response Process In Dialogue Journals, Donna E. Werderich
The Teacher's Response Process In Dialogue Journals, Donna E. Werderich
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This grounded theory study explores how middle school literacy teachers used dialogue journals and the processes by which they responded to their students' written responses. Literary conversation between teacher and student was conceptualized as an ongoing scaffolding process within dialogue journals. Teachers used "response facilitators" including visual aids, modeling, questioning/requesting, and feedback independently and in combination with one another to scaffold literary conversation with students. Every response from a teacher had a place on a response continuum, fluctuating between instructional responses and conversational responses. There were times when the teachers' roles called for direct scaffolding, focusing on developing students' literacy …

Susanna's Way Of Becoming Literate: A Case Study Of Literacy Acquisition By A Young Girl From A Chinese Immigrant Family, Gaoyin Qian, Junlin Pan
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Susanna, a young girl from a low-income Chinese immigrant family, develops her oral language proficiency quickly in Head Start and kindergarten; however, she needs more support in her reading and writing. This case study examines an unusual journey of Susanna's learning to read and write in English. Observations in her home indicate a home with limited print, whereas Head Start and kindergarten provide not only print rich environment but also teachers' and peers' support so that she moves from an English language observer to an English language user. However, she still struggles with the use of decontextualized language. Susanna's difficulties …

Leadership Styles Inventory Of Michigan Career And Technical Education Area Center Principals, Alan D. Papendick
Dissertations
This study was conducted to determine the leadership styles of the career and technical education (CTE) area center principals in Michigan and how effective they are perceived by their subordinates. The concept of leadership traits or styles has been studied extensively within the K--12 general education setting, but lacks sufficient empirical evidence within the CTE community. The population for this study included all the CTE area center principals in Michigan and their determined subordinates: lead administrative assistant, counselor, paraprofessional, and four faculty members. This study analyzed data collected from 19 CTEarea center principals and 70 subordinates. The instrument used for …
An Evaluation Of Intraverbal Training And Listener Training For Teaching Categorization Skills, Anna Ingeborg Petursdottir
An Evaluation Of Intraverbal Training And Listener Training For Teaching Categorization Skills, Anna Ingeborg Petursdottir
Dissertations
Behavioral language interventions, such as those employed in early and intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) programs, target both expressive and receptive language skills. Skinner's (1957) analysis of verbal behavior provides a framework for analyzing expressive and receptive language in terms of stimulus control and reinforcement history. From this perspective, different expressive language programs target different verbal operants, such as tacts, intraverbals, and echoics , whereas most receptive language programs target a type of listener behavior that may be referred to as manded stimulus selection (Michael, 1995). Although EIBI curricula (e.g., Maurice, Green, & Luce, 1996; Leaf & McEachin, 1999) have frequently …

Non-Traditional Paths To Presidencies Of Higher Education Institutions In Michigan, Daryl Joseph Delabbio
Non-Traditional Paths To Presidencies Of Higher Education Institutions In Michigan, Daryl Joseph Delabbio
Dissertations
The number of college and university presidents coming from a career path outside of higher education has seen a steady increase, from just under 10% in1986, to over 15% in 2001 (Corrigan, 2002), yet little is still known about this growing population. This qualitative study examined four current or former presidents of institutions of higher learning in Michigan who were elected to their positions without having experienced the traditional academic career pathcommonly associated with college and university leaders. Four presidents, along with their current or former chief academic officers and two current or former members of the governing boards that …

The Persistence Of At Risk College Students Into Their 8Th Semester At A Private Christian College, Rick Zomer
The Persistence Of At Risk College Students Into Their 8Th Semester At A Private Christian College, Rick Zomer
Dissertations
It is estimated that the number of students who will begin a course of study but fail to complete a post secondary degree is between 28.5% (Tinto, 1993) and 50% (Brawer, 1990). This qualitative study reviewed sixteen students enrolled at a private Christian college who were deemed to be at risk based on specific pre-enrollment data but had successfully persisted into their senior year of college. Tinto's Theory of Departure and the role of mentoring were used as lenses to determine: (1) the role of individual intentions and commitments in their persistence; (2) the impact of social and educational congruence …

Program Development During Fiscal Crisis: A Community/University Response, Dianne Rush Woods, Phu Tai Phan, Terry Jones
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This article discusses the often difficult and challenging process of setting up a new academic department, especially during a time of budget crisis. Furthermore it examines the role and purpose of the university, the place of so-called applied programs within the university, curriculum development of a new program, racial and cultural diversity at the university, and the overall relevance of the university as a vehicle for addressing community needs. The paper concludes with a discussion on how a Social Work faculty was able to use the university's mission to persuade its leadership into setting up a Social Work Department.

Handout at the International Education Form at the WMU Faculty Senate on April 6, 2006. The benchmarks were taken from Measuring Internationalization of Research Universities (ACE, 2005) and compares the answers given by WMU to those of highly internationalized research universities. This was part of a survey WMU filled out when we joined the American Council on Education Internationalization Collaborative.
