The team reached the NCAA Division II tournament for the first time in school history and reached the regional semifinals. The program continued to excel in the 2003-04 season, posting a 31-4 record, the best in school history. The Warriors finished the season ranked fourth in the nation. The team won the Northeast-10 regular season and tournament titles to advance to the NCAA Division II tournament. Woodward returns a core of accomplished veteran players in addition to an exciting group of newcomers to highlight the upcoming season. Maine finished 12-16 during the 2005-06 season after key injuries to several Black Bears. All-Conference guard Kevin Reed sat out the season as a medical redshirt, while All-Rookie selection Philippe Tchekane Bofia missed several games as well during the season.

Head Coach Tim Whitehead enters his sixth season at the helm of the University of Maine men's ice hockey program. With Whitehead behind the bench, the Black Bears have continued the success that has defined the program for nearly two decades.

In his first five seasons as head coach, the Black Bears have advanced to the NCAA Tournament all five seasons, reached the NCAA National Championship game twice, played in three NCAA Frozen Fours and won the Hockey East Tournament Championship.
