The Met School is a high school where personalization, interest-based learning, exhibitions, real-life experiences and parent communication are their main focuses. Gifted, bright, unusual, struggling, and special education students are all intermixed in classrooms today. As a result, teachers are expected to differentiate their instruction to meet the varying needs of these students. Unfortunately, the training teachers receive is often inadequate. Experienced and inexperienced teachers have different needs. In this project, the author attempted to solve this problem by designing a staff development workshop that is broken into two sections. The first section is to discuss the reasoning behind differentiated instruction. The second section is for all teachers. Historically, individuals and members of specific groups have always been denied equality in the society in which they live. Denials for equality have been based upon a person's: (a) gender, such as women's suffrage (b) race, such as Rosa Parks and her fearless refusal to give up her seat on a bus; and (c) age, the current trend of some companies to enforce a mandatory retirement age upon employees, even if they are still productive. Over the past decade, cognitive and behavior problems, characterized by symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, have affected millions of children around the world. Collectively, these symptoms are referred to as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD; [American Psychiatric Association, 1994), and it is the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder (Barkley, 1990). The collective problems that define ADHD contribute to one of the most complex childhood disorders of this time (Goldstein & Goldstein, 1998).
