I have found a book that I have been seeking. Don’t be put off by its size and weight; this is a book that all teacher researchers will want to own. While written for teacher researchers, this book challenges us by refusing to stop at simple truisms about the importance of teacher’s voices and the benefits of reflective practice. This book challenges us not only to do teacher research, but to do it well.

The TA experience may be something new to many graduate students. Sharing the experiences of one TA can assist others who are new to this responsibility. This paper provides broad guidelines for TAs based on my personal experience of being a teaching assistant for three different courses over one academic year. It provides TAs with tips on important topics such as: their relationships with course instructors, their relationships with students, grading of student papers, session evaluations, teaching methodology, as well as the proper ways of introducing change, particularly in the use of technology.

In North America, interests that pervade postsecondary institutions are often covert, yet there is an identifiable pulse driving programs, research, conferences, and community service. The pulse can be identified as improvement, change, and innovation. We do this not because we are unwell, but rather as an ethical endeavor that infuses both mind and body in our search to advance our practices, society, and ourselves. Whether we are a student attending these large institutions or simply reflecting upon our current role as faculty we will be able to recall what our teachers did, or did not do, to help us in …

Gordon Wells is the founder of Networks and has served as our editor for eight volumes (AKA eight years). He has kindly agreed to continue to serve to the review board and continue to act as a mentor to myself as I take on the new responsibility of editing this online journal. The transition has taken some time, much more time than I had hoped, but I suspect that the time was well invested. With a lot of help from a phenomenal group of people here at the University of Wisconsin Madison, we have been able to use the Open …

In this paper, I summarize an intense two-week study that I participated in at a Summer Institute on Education and Democracy at the University of Manitoba, Canada, beginning with brief descriptions of the innovation, Nos histoires, the purpose of the study, and the research method. I share the action research process and my reflections using Brown’s (2004) meaning-making model of action research, the learning circle, as an organizing framework. The four stages of this model, Wholeness, Awareness, Meaning, and Commitment, are used as headings to report stages of the study. This framework helped me align a series of actions with …
