The purpose of this quantitative research study was to explore instructional computer use by faculty members in the College of Education (COE) at an Anatolian university in Turkey. The faculty members in the study reported low levels of use and expertise in instructional computer technologies. Variables that were analyzed for their influence with regard to the faculty members' use of computers for instructional purposes included demographic characteristics, computer expertise, computer access, barriers to computer access, attitude toward computer use, support for computer use, and adopter categories based on innovativeness. Variables that were found to be significantly correlated with faculty members ...

An Assessment Of The Effectiveness Of Interaction In Distance Education Based On Student Satisfaction With The Learner-Centered Paradigm , Shu-Hui Hsieh Chang Jan 2006

An Assessment Of The Effectiveness Of Interaction In Distance Education Based On Student Satisfaction With The Learner-Centered Paradigm , Shu-Hui Hsieh Chang

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study examined whether there were relationships between students' perceptions of course-related interaction and their course satisfaction within the learner-centered paradigm in distance education. To study these relationships, the researcher developed the Students' Perceived Interaction Survey (SPIS) to examine nine separate hypotheses about the nature of course-related interaction. The variables tested included: student-instructor interaction, student-TA interaction, student-student interaction, student-content interaction, gender, academic classification, students' prior experiences with distance education in a partially online class setting, students' prior experiences with distance education in an entirely online class setting, and students' perceptions of the effectiveness of WebCT features in helping them learn ...

Perceptions And Practices Of Effective Distance Teaching: A Survey Of Faculty At Iowa State University , Ann Kathleen Bugler

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to examine the beliefs and practices of effective distance teaching by university faculty members and to compare distance teaching practices with face-to-face practices. An on-line survey using multiple choice and open-ended questions was distributed to a convenience sample of faculty members from a large, Midwestern university who taught at a distance between the spring of 2001 and the spring of 2005. Descriptive data were collected on demographics, beliefs, and practices of faculty members teaching at a distance. The response rate for this study was almost 64%. The results showed evidence that the faculty members were satisfied ...

Learning In Community: Student Perceptions And Experiences , Janice A. Wiersema Jan 2006

Learning In Community: Student Perceptions And Experiences , Janice A. Wiersema

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Beginning in the 2002-03 school year all teacher evaluators in the state of Iowa were required to take part in the then newly-created Iowa Evaluator Approval Training Program (IEATP). This program was designed to train evaluators in teacher evaluation based on the Iowa Teaching Standards and Criteria. For this study novice teachers from Iowa public schools were surveyed and asked questions regarding the five attributes of teacher evaluation using a modified Teacher Evaluation Profile (TEP), originally designed by Stiggins and Duke (1988). The attributes include the following topics, each defined through a number of different traits: (a) self as a ...

Computer-Mediated Communication In Higher Education: An Exploration Of Knowledge Construction , Mustafa Tuncay Saritas Jan 2006

Computer-Mediated Communication In Higher Education: An Exploration Of Knowledge Construction , Mustafa Tuncay Saritas

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Constructivist theories about knowledge construction emphasize that knowledge construction is more powerful and meaningful when it is actively built up by students through engaging in equilibrated exchanges and experiencing cognitive disequilibrium. From this perspective, knowledge construction is thought to be effective in learning environments where intense interactive discussions can take place, deeply held values are shared, and complex issues examined from multiple perspectives (Harasim, 1990). Computer-mediated communication, more specifically computer conferencing systems (CCS), has captured the interest of educators as an ideal tool to create this type of learning environment, featuring active, participative, and reflective learning; This study developed a ...

Participatory Instructional Design: A Contradiction In Terms?, Rema Nilakanta Jan 2006

Participatory Instructional Design: A Contradiction In Terms?, Rema Nilakanta

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an inquiry into the apparent absence of participatory approaches in instructional design (ID). It explores the question "what happens when ID becomes participatory?" with the help of three articles. The first article proposes a new approach in ID called Participatory ID, which incorporates principles and techniques of participatory design (PD), a software design approach that calls for genuine user involvement in the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of educational technology. Article 2 explores the feasibility of such an approach in higher education by studying an authentic case of participatory design and development of an electronic portfolio system ...

Winston Charter School: A Case Study Involving The Intersection Of External And Internal Accountability Mandates , Rebecca Susan Pitkin

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Charter schools are a growing force within the school choice movement. Charter school law provides charter schools the freedom to innovate and maintain increased autonomy as long as internal and external accountability mandates are begin met. Despite the growing popularity of charter schools, little is known about charter schools in high stakes testing states and the way they negotiate the intersection of external accountability mandates and internal school mission. This qualitative case study examines a charter school for diverse students in an urban setting. The study describes the practices teachers and the head of school engage in to fulfill the ...

Remediating The Professional Classroom: The New Rhetoric Of Teaching And Learning , David Dean Fisher Jan 2006

Remediating The Professional Classroom: The New Rhetoric Of Teaching And Learning , David Dean Fisher

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The incarnation of many Internet-based courses is informed by traditional notions of classroom instruction, in which course/content management systems (CMSs) like WebCT and Blackboard are used to reproduce actions undertaken in brick-and-mortar classrooms. In this dissertation I argue that the way in which the CMS is configured and deployed can provide students with the sense that they are immersed in a social activity other than taking a college course. Elaborating on simulation-building methodologies, I show how we have created a CMS called MyCase that helps classroom instructors evoke and immerse students in discourse-demanding situations within several disciplines. This sense ...

Technology Integration For Teaching And Learning Spanish In Elementary Schools: Voices Of Designers, Teachers And Students , Eduardo García Villada Jan 2006

Technology Integration For Teaching And Learning Spanish In Elementary Schools: Voices Of Designers, Teachers And Students , Eduardo García Villada

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A critical review of the literature on computer-assisted language learning (CALL) research between 1980 and 2005 indicates that no one in the field of foreign language at the elementary school (FLES) has identified what principles might be useful for practice-oriented CALL that is relevant for young learners, and that very little research had been published in the area. To fill this gap, a theoretical framework is proposed to design, evaluate, and use CALL materials for FLES, and the framework is tested in two studies.;The first was a phenomenological investigation of K-6 teachers' projects from a teachers' professional development program ...

The Relationship Between Learner Characteristics And The Perception Of Distance Learning And Satisfaction With Web-Based Courses , Sami Sahin

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Distance education and web-based courses are now mainstream in the U.S. higher education involving over 80% of four year public universities and growing (NCES, 2003). This study investigated the relationships between students' characteristics and their perception of web-based learning and satisfaction with distance learning in five Web-based undergraduate biology courses in a Midwestern university. This quantitative study surveyed 279 students and used multivariate statistical techniques. The online survey combined Kolb's (1984) Learning Styles Inventory and Walker's (2003) Distance Education Learning Environment Survey plus demographic questions. The study found that the three dimensions of Moore's Transactional Distance ...
