Spirituality Among A Predominately African American College Student Population, Dixie L. Dennis, Terence Hicks, Priya Banerjee, Brent G. Dennis Aug 2005

Spirituality Among A Predominately African American College Student Population, Dixie L. Dennis, Terence Hicks, Priya Banerjee, Brent G. Dennis

Faculty Working Papers from the School of Education

The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of spirituality among 430 predominately African American undergraduate students who completed the 48-item Life Attitude Profile-Revised (LAP-R). T-tests revealed that these students had a higher spirituality score than their predominately White counterparts who recently completed the LAP-R. Unlike the White students, no significant gender differences were found among specific spiritual indices. If these students use their moderately high degree of spirituality to influence health-related behaviors, the high rates of morbidity and mortality common among African American adults may lessen.

Inopportunity Of Gender: The G.I. Bill And The Higher Education Of The American Female, 1939-1954, Matthew P. Nagowski May 2005

Inopportunity Of Gender: The G.I. Bill And The Higher Education Of The American Female, 1939-1954, Matthew P. Nagowski

Student Works

While the 1944 Serviceman’s Readjustment Act, commonly known as the G.I. Bill, has been instilled within the collective consciousness of the United States as one of the most overwhelmingly positive pieces of legislation in the nation’s history, there has been little empirical inquiry into the effect that it had on the non-veteran female. Both Marcus (2003) and Bound and Turner (2001) find that of the World War II veterans that obtained a higher education on the G.I. Bill, fully 20 percent of them, or 400,000, would not have attended college had it not been for ...

Toward Intelligent Assistance For A Data Mining Process: An Ontology-Based Approach For Cost-Sensitive Classification, Abraham Bernstein, Shawndra Hill, Foster Provost Apr 2005

Toward Intelligent Assistance For A Data Mining Process: An Ontology-Based Approach For Cost-Sensitive Classification, Abraham Bernstein, Shawndra Hill, Foster Provost

Operations, Information and Decisions Papers

A data mining (DM) process involves multiple stages. A simple, but typical, process might include preprocessing data, applying a data mining algorithm, and postprocessing the mining results. There are many possible choices for each stage, and only some combinations are valid. Because of the large space and nontrivial interactions, both novices and data mining specialists need assistance in composing and selecting DM processes. Extending notions developed for statistical expert systems we present a prototype intelligent discovery assistant (IDA), which provides users with 1) systematic enumerations of valid DM processes, in order that important, potentially fruitful options are not overlooked, and ...
