The article portrays the passage of the Higher Education Act of 1965 as a watershed event, much like the Morrill Land Grant Act and the G.I. Bill, in the history of opening higher education to a broader range of citizens. African-Americans and persons of Hispanic origin represent only 8 percent of full-time faculty nation-wide, and while 5 percent are African-American, half of them work at historically black institutions. [Excerpt] No discussion of governance in higher education would be complete without a consideration of the role of collective bargaining. Historically, most researchers interested in the subject have directed their attention to the unionization of faculty members. Given several recent decisions by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) that leave open the possibility that unionization of faculty in private colleges and universities may increase in the future, we discuss collective bargaining for faculty in the first section (Leatherman 2000, A16).

This paper considers how a state such as Michigan can increase the economic development benefits of higher education. Research evidence suggests that higher education increases local economic development principally by increasing the quality of the local workforce, and secondarily by increasing local innovative ideas. Student Self-Esteem And The Looking-Glass Self: Perceptions Of Emotional Support, Role Models, And Academic Success On A Community College Campus , Robert Lee Mcnair

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A survey of 261 students at Des Moines Area Community College-Boone Campus was conducted to examine self-esteem in relation to perceptions of role models, emotional support, academic adjustment, and academic success. Symbolic interactionism and the looking-glass self formed the conceptual basis of the research. Factor and Cronbach's alpha analyses tended to confirm internal validity and reliability of the constructs, respectively.;Hypothesis testing revealed some significant (p ≤ .05) relationships. The purpose of this study was to investigate through phenomenological methodology how a Latina-based sorority influences the ethnic identity development of those associated with it on a predominantly white campus in the Midwest. Using ethnographic methods, the twelve-week study involved weekly observations during the organization's scheduled meetings and other extracurricular activities. The fifteen participants were asked through a written survey, focus group sessions, and in-depth interviews to reflect on their experiences and environments before beginning college and at the present time.
