Total Team Teaching — Sharing Teaching Duties Equally, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Feb 2004

Total Team Teaching — Sharing Teaching Duties Equally, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Charlie Sweet

In his excellent book on team teaching (Interdisciplinary Courses and Team Teaching), James Davis posits two extremes on the continuum of team teaching. One pole consists of “courses planned by a group of faculty and then carried out in serial segments by the individual members of the group” (p. 7). At the opposite pole are “courses planned and delivered by a group … . They take primary responsibility for individual class sessions, but sometimes [italics ours] two or more faculty are involved in planning and delivering the instruction of a particular class.” (p. 7) The two of us take the …

The Hitman From New York, Hal Charles

Charlie Sweet

The stranger's seven words seized Sawyer's gut like thick fingers twisting and squeezing all the juices loose. "What . . . what did you say?" Sawyer stumbled, covering his mouth with his napkin for fear he was about to become a human Mt. Etna spewing out bile. Calmly, the large stranger sat down at the table across from him, ceremoniously removed his NY Yankees baseball cap, and repeated matter-of-factually, "I have been contracted to kill you."

The Comparison Of Social And Academic Support Services For Regular And Specially Admitted African American Females At A Predominantly White Institution, Corinne J. Gibson

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to (a) compare the academic and social support services provided to regularly admitted African American females with specially admitted African American females all of whom attend a predominantly white institution, and (b) determine how responsive the predominantly white institution is to the academic and social needs of African American females. The academic and social support for both groups was similar with higher utilization and satisfaction of services among the specially admitted. However, the institution did not prove to be responsive to African American females in many of the social aspects. The results showed that …

Expenditures Streams And School Improvement In Kentucky: Does Money Matter?, Edward B. Reeves Feb 2004

Expenditures Streams And School Improvement In Kentucky: Does Money Matter?, Edward B. Reeves

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Every Kentucky public school is expected to achieve the goal of proficiency on the State's Accountability Index by the year 2014. Many schools may not reach the proficiency goal in time without a broad, multifaceted approach to enhance educational outcomes. A strategy to optimize the allocation of school district funds may contribute to this goal. Previous studies have attempted to answer the question "does money matter?" for raising school performance, but to date the findings have proven inconsistent. One reason for this might be that most of these studies have used a global measure of monetary resources, such as total …

Academic Service-Learning In The Human Resource Development Curriculum, Ovilla Turnbull, Susan R. Madsen Feb 2004

Academic Service-Learning In The Human Resource Development Curriculum, Ovilla Turnbull, Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

Service-learning is a relatively new pedagogy which uses service activities to support traditional teaching methods, giving students a better understanding and ability to remember and carry out functions/skills taught in class. Although its use in an HRD course has rarely been reported in the literature, the teaching methods appear to be ideal for instilling in students the skills and/or traits necessary to be successful in HRD (e.g., intellectual versatility, adult learning insight, and industry understanding).

Why Teach ''Research As A Conversation'' In Freshman Composition Courses? A Metaphor To Help Librarians And Composition Instructors Develop A Shared Model, P. S. Mcmillen, E. Hill

Library Faculty Publications

Ongoing discussion between the Oregon State University (OSU) libraries' acting instruction coordinator and the Assistant Composition Coordinator focuses on improving collaboration between our programs and more effectively integrating the research process into the English composition curriculum. We briefly describe a qualitative analysis of the problems with students' writing that led us to develop a new model for integrating the research and writing processes. We provide our rationale for selecting conversation as a metaphor for research and summarize suggested teaching strategies from the literature that are consistent with this metaphor and approach.

A Multicultural Learning Community: Facilitating Faculty Relationships With East Asian Students On An American Christian College Campus, Larry K. Asplund

Doctor of Ministry

The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the cross-cultural challenges faced by teachers and East Asian students on an American Christian college campus, and to seek effective ways of facilitating relationships between them. How could I effectively facilitate meaningful cross-cultural relationships between members of the faculty and East Asian students? How is it possible for a Christian college campus to become a multicultural learning community?

My claim is that it is possible to facilitate faculty relationships with East Asian students if a high priority is placed on the Christian value of relationships in community and cultural learning, i.e. learning …

Increasing The Angle Of Educational Reform In Pakistan: Through Professional Development, Nilofar Vazir, Alan Wheeler

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

This paper documents the development of a “grassroots” teacher professional development model from Pakistan and region designed around three critical aspects: (a) the impact on classroom teaching and learning, (b) the provision for capacity building, and (c) a mechanism for ongoing support and sustainability. The development and evolution of the innovation is presented in terms of three stages designed to increase the angle of educational reform through total school improvement. The implications of the model as a promising prototype are discussed in relation to the wider professional development needs of teachers in the developing world.

Leadership And Management - Are They Alike?, Sajid Ali Jan 2004

Leadership And Management - Are They Alike?, Sajid Ali

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

This paper tries to distinguish between the leadership and management constructs to clarify the confusion caused by the loose usage of the terms in popular language. The two concepts should be understood as distinct for theoretical clarifications but not to argue for any hierarchical relationship. The paper tries to define both management and leadership, and then describes several ways the leadership construct is presented in the literature followed by a resolution of leadership definitions. Finally, the paper shares four criteria to distinguish between the leadership and the management functions. The paper concludes by arguing that leadership should be seen as …

Successful Online Course Retention At Marylhurst University Constructing A Model For Online Course Retention Using Grounded Theory, Vincent Schreck

Dissertations and Theses

Over the past 6 years, the course retention rate for Marylhurst University's (MU) online courses was 91%, which is within four percentage points of its on-campus course retention rate (Schreck, 2002). This appears to contradict a recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education that stated, "Although there is significant variation among institutions with some reporting course-completion rates of more than 80% and others finding that fewer than 50% of distance-education students finish their courses, several administrators concur that course-completion rates are often 10-20 percentage points higher in traditional courses than in distance offerings" (Carr, 2000). Recent studies (Beatty-Gunter 2001; …

Effects Of Thinking-Aloud Pair Problem Solving On The Troubleshooting Performance Of Undergraduate Students In A Power Technology Course, Michael L. Pate, George W. Wardlow, Donald M. Johnson

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

A randomized post-test-only experimental design with a counter-balanced internal replication was used to determine the effects of thinking-aloud pair problem solving (TAPPS) on the troubleshooting performance of college students in a power technology course. The experimental results were stable across two troubleshooting tasks. Students who participated in the pair problem solving groups were significantly more successful (p ≤ .05) at troubleshooting engine faults than were students in the control groups. Among students who successfully completed the troubleshooting tasks across both groups, there were no significant differences in time required for completion. These findings indicate that the use of pair problem …

Foucault And The Practice Of Educational Development: Power And Surveillance In Individual Consultations, Peter Felten, Diandra Little, Allison Pingree Jan 2004

Foucault And The Practice Of Educational Development: Power And Surveillance In Individual Consultations, Peter Felten, Diandra Little, Allison Pingree

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

A common goal of educational development is to create a neutral, “safe” place for clients in individual consultations. Such an approach, while well intentioned, obscures the multifaceted web of power threading through and around our work. Using Michel Foucault’s theories of sovereign and disciplinary power, we trace the forms that power can take in specific types of consultations (small group instructional diagnosis, course evaluations, and videotape). While power is always “dangerous,” it is less likely to be damaging if we are conscious of its presence and impact—and of our own participation in its complexity.
