Con base en un cuestionario aplicado a 289 académicos con 30 o más horas semanales de trabajo, en una institución de educación superior pública, del noroeste del país, se investigó la percepción de los encuestados sobre su influencia en las decisiones de las administraciones central y de las unidades académicas, así como de ellos mismos. Pomerantz and Pierce conduct a study to compare the approaches and methods recommended in the literacy courses that were taught to the approaches and methods employed by students during the student teaching practicum and their first year as a classroom teacher. Results capture the developing belief systems of preservice teachers as they ventured from methods classes into the real world of classroom instruction.

Research and publication is an inherent value at all institutions of higher education. Regardless of the motivation, faculty research fulfils a vital need for new knowledge generation. The purpose of the current study is to pilot test a survey instrument to evaluate factors that have an affect on faculty research at one public comprehensive four-year institution. The Business School in cooperation with the Office of Institutional Research created an instrument to track changes in faculty motivation and research involvement over time, with an emphasis on submissions and publications as effective outcomes. Imagining Alternativas To Global, Corporate, New Economy Academic Capitalism, Gary Rhoades, Alma Maldonado-Maldonado, Imanol Ordorika, Martín Velásquez

In this article, the authors detail the conditions and patterns of academic capitalism and the new economy in US higher education. Subsequently, a conceptual model is offered for considering the international reach and national and local patterns of academic capitalism. Further, a distinctive Mexican case of entrepreneurialism is offered. The article concludes with a discussion of alternatives for a model of a universidad latinoamericana that is grounded in the historical role of Latin American universities.

Due to changes in the academic market, faculty job satisfaction is especially critical. Using a multi-step framework, this study explores the role of family and stress related “pull factors” on a measure of overall job satisfaction for a large nationally representative sample of college and university faculty members. These “pull factors” include, but are not limited to, care for a child, spouse or elder, as well as other responsibilities and duties not directly related to one’s academic career.

In recent years, Caribbeanists of different academic specialization and intellectual orientation have demonstrated a renewed interest in the unholy trinity of race, class and ethnic matters. the renewed interest has reflected a continued, but rather an unsystematic attempt to account for the social characteristics of race, ethnicity, gender and class among Caribbean people, both at home and abroad. The current ethnic power relationships manisfested by the unequal distribution of wealth in Caribbean diasporic communities is the direct result of colonialist influence on race through exploitative practices of the plantocracy and selective immigration to create a Caribbean middle class.

Student affairs administrators representing four types of institutions were interviewed to determine the role that religio-spirituality plays in their professional lives. Results reveal that most desire more freedom to express this aspect of their identity in that it has a salient impact in how they work with students. However, several reasons are given for the reluctance of many to freely express their religio-spirituality with their colleagues.
