Many stories fail to capture the reader's interest even though they have a clear point of view, well-rounded characters and an interesting plot. What's missing? One key element that writers frequently overlook is setting. They treat it merely as backdrop.

"Shiloh": A Mini-Casebook Approach To Upper-Division Literature Courses, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe
Hal Blythe
Shows how the mini-casebook approach, with a few modifications, works well with upper-division writing assignments. Notes that a mini-casebook approach is nothing more than a self-published document including a primary work of literature, selected secondary sources on that work, and a selection of several specified topics on the primary source. Presents eight suggestions for implementing the mini-casebook approach
Hawthorne's Dating Problem In "The Scarlet Letter", Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe
Hawthorne's Dating Problem In "The Scarlet Letter", Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe
Hal Blythe
This article explores the dating problem in Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, The Scarlet Letter. In The Custom House, Hawthorne relates how he discovers several foolscap sheets written by a predecessor, Mr. Surveyor Pue, about Hester Prynne. These six sheets supposedly offer two types of accounts about Hester: aged persons, alive in the time of Pue and from whose oral testimony he had made up his narrative, remembered her, in their youth and those who had heard the tale from contemporary witnesses. A dating problem arises with the first group. Critics concur that historical documents place the events in The Scarlet Letter …

Hemingway's "The Killers", Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

In his seminal study Hemingway and the Dead Gods, John Killinger relates Papa's fictional world to existententialism, concluding that Hemingway sees that individuality is not a quality which can be superimposed externally on a man, but that it must be internally achieved by a decision to be at all times an authentic person and to accept the full responsibility of action proper to a primary agent. In his philosophy, as in that of Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Sartre, the opportunity for such a decision is presented as a moment of crisis, which, for him, is produced by confronting death or violence.

Aussies Schools Are Not So 'Undemocratic', John Ainley, Adrian Beavis, Gary Marks, Ken Rowe
Aussies Schools Are Not So 'Undemocratic', John Ainley, Adrian Beavis, Gary Marks, Ken Rowe
Dr John Ainley
The underlying thesis in the recent book 'Undemocratic schooling' by Richard Teese and John Polesel is that social reproduction in Australia, that is the transmission of socioeconomic inequality from one generation to the next, is particularly strong. But Teese and Polesel have over-stated the case. Whereas socioeconomic background and schools do influence educational outcomes, and thus subsequent labour market outcomes, they are far from having a determining influence. The system is far more open than generally believed. Their thesis undervalues the importance of quality schooling and the contributions that teachers and schools make to the development of their students' abilities, …

Pisa : Providing International Comparisons, John Cresswell
Dr John Cresswell
The OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) aims to measure how well students nearing the end of their compulsory schooling are prepared for adult life. The assessment is forward looking, focusing on students' ability to meet real-life challenges, rather than testing whether they have mastered a particular curriculum. This article reports

Can Virtual Teacher Communities Be A Reality?, Randall S. Dunn
Randall S. Dunn
In this paper I will discuss the effects of online communication on social connectivity and the development of community, as specifically related to teacher communities. I will begin by discussing differing constructions and aspects of the concept of community and the important role of connectivity in the development of community. I will then discuss modern technologies in the realm of CMC (Computer-Mediated Communication), the foundations of these technologies as actual tools for collaboration and community, and the role these technologies play in developing connectedness in communities. I will then draw out characteristics and value in virtual community interaction and its …

Response To 'Cautions On Oecd's Recent Educational Survey (Pisa), Ray Adams
Response To 'Cautions On Oecd's Recent Educational Survey (Pisa), Ray Adams
Prof Ray Adams
This paper refers to the work of S J Prais who questioned the outcomes of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's PISA survey of the reading, mathematics and science attainments of fifteen year-olds. Prais suggested that methodological flaws in Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) had resulted in an apparent improvement in the attainment of British students, particularly when compared to their Swiss and German counterparts. This paper responds to Prais's criticisms, noting that when Prais's conjectures are tested with empirical data they are not supported. The author argues that many of Prais's criticisms are due to an incomplete …

Innovation In Practice : From Consumption To Creation, Elizabeth Hartnell-Young
Dr Elizabeth Hartnell-Young
This paper focuses on three aspects of innovation: its purpose of supporting lifelong learning during and after schooling, the ways that information and communications technology (ICT) supports learning and knowledge creation, and digital portfolios as an example of learning and innovation. Digital portfolios, containers of multimedia forms of evidence of activities, achievements and reflections, are just one way in which technology can support lifelong learning and the creation and sharing of knowledge.

Insights Into Meeting Standards From Listening To The Voices Of Urban Students, Mark Storz, Karen Nestor
Insights Into Meeting Standards From Listening To The Voices Of Urban Students, Mark Storz, Karen Nestor
Mark G. Storz
Part of a special section on the use of standards in middle schools. Students' perspectives on learning were considered when a newly configured K–8 school in a large urban district implemented standards-based reform. Interviews with middle school students in the district indicated that they wanted school experiences that were challenging, integrative, and exploratory and that they were eager to partner with their teachers to achieve high standards of performance that allowed them to develop fully as individuals. A challenging, integrative, and exploratory curriculum is the only way to achieve high academic standards and should be the standard for developmentally responsive …
