Faculty Diversity, Kyle Scafide, Barbara Johnson Aug 2002

Faculty Diversity, Kyle Scafide, Barbara Johnson

Kyle Scafide

This article presents a broad view of issues related to faculty diversity. Headings include Demographics, The Growth of Faculty Diversity as an Ideal, and Barriers in the Academic Workplace. Race, ethnicity, and gender are the most common characteristics that institutions observe in order to measure faculty diversity. An even broader approach to faculty diversity involves age, socioeconomic background, national origin, sexual orientation, and diverse learning styles and opinions. Until the latter part of the twentieth century, the professoriate in the western world was composed almost exclusively of privileged, heterosexual males of Caucasian descent. Higher education institutions are generally concerned with …

Steven R Rogg

In 2000 IMSA and the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Project 2061 established a partnership, IMSA 2061, to offer unique and nationally recognized professional development programs for mathematics and science teachers and education leaders. Participants in the IMSA 2061 professional development programs learn to use the tools, research, and experiences of education reform to enable all students to achieve the learning expressed in state and national standards. Activities described in this report fall into two categories, Introductory Workshops and long-term programs with districts. IMSA 2061 Introductory Workshops help educators become aware of how to apply Project 2061 publications …

Decentralisation Of Professional Development: Teachers' Decisions And Dilemmas, Philip Kelly, Mcdiarmid Williamson Jun 2002

Decentralisation Of Professional Development: Teachers' Decisions And Dilemmas, Philip Kelly, Mcdiarmid Williamson

Philip P. Kelly

This study examines professional development activities under the omnibus Kentucky Education Reform Act and finds them lacking. It addresses three related questions. Are Kentucky teachers, in fact, in charge of their own professional development? What are the formats and foci of the professional development opportunities teachers are planning? How is professional development changing in the increasingly high–stakes environment created by the accountability movement? Analysis of professional development activities reveals systemic weaknesses that are counterproductive to improving teacher quality. Chief among these weaknesses are system–wide ignorance of alternative professional development activities and a failure to define professional development engagement beyond the …

Outcomes Assessment: Developing An Electronic Assessment Database As A Model For Collection And Analysis Of Data, Joni E. Spurlin, Sarah A. Rajala, Jerome P. Lavelle, O. Jerome Hoskins

Sarah A. Rajala

As the ABET process in each institution moves toward outcomes assessment, it pushes each program to develop and implement its outcome assessment plans. Assessment plans document how programs will gather data, interpret the findings, and use the results to make improvements in programs, curricula, and resources. The ABET team at North Carolina State University (faculty from each engineering discipline along with assessment-knowledgeable personnel) has developed a model that academic programs within the College of Engineering use to determine what data to gather, where to obtain the data, and what criteria may be most appropriate when interpreting the data. This paper …

Using Biography In The Elementary Classroom, Dorothy Bowen May 2002

Using Biography In The Elementary Classroom, Dorothy Bowen

Dorothy N. Bowen

When biography first gained recognition as a genre for adults, it was not considered an appropriate form of literature for children. As it began to gain a place in children's literature, as was true of most books written for children at the time, biography was used as a tool for teaching children to emulate the hero.

On Decreasing Gender Differences And Attitudinal Changes: Factors Influencing Australian And English Pupils' Choice Of A Career In Science, Linda Miller, Petra Lietz, Dieter Kotte Mar 2002

On Decreasing Gender Differences And Attitudinal Changes: Factors Influencing Australian And English Pupils' Choice Of A Career In Science, Linda Miller, Petra Lietz, Dieter Kotte

Dr Petra Lietz

Encouraging the entry of women into science-related careers remains problematic in the UK and Australia. Although recent initiatives have resulted in increased participation of girls in science-related subjects in schools, there remains a significant gender divide in entry to scientific programmes of study at post-compulsory and university levels. In this study, datasets for 13-year-old pupils in Australia and England taken from the Third International Maths and Science Survey (TIMSS) were used to derive path models that identify factors influencing the extent to which science-related careers were viewed as desirable by Australian and English pupils. Results indicated that, in both countries, …

Student Absence In South Australian Schools., Sheldon Rothman Mar 2002

Student Absence In South Australian Schools., Sheldon Rothman

Dr Sheldon Rothman

Students who are frequently absent from school ('non-attenders') are considered to be 'at risk'. State education departments have recently begun to improve their collection of student absence data, often to contribute to the development of performance standards for schools. This paper presents a summary of data from the Term 2 collection in South Australian government schools in 1997 and 1999. the data were combined with student information, which allowed examination and comparison of attendance patterns for different groups of students. The author provides details about which students were absent in those years, the frequency of students' absences, which students had …

Museum Educators' Workshop Study: Attracting And Retaining Teachers In Museum-Sponsored Professional Development Programs, Steven R. Rogg

Steven R Rogg

In preparation for the Museum Educator’s Workshop, the Planning Team saw that a necessary first step would be to honor the perspectives of Chicago Public School (CPS) teachers and principals. Changes in Illinois Teacher Recertification requirements, changes within the CPS itself, and nation-wide developments in the teaching profession suggested that a fresh look at Chicago’s professional development landscape would be necessary. Indeed, many relevant questions about the role(s) of museums in teacher professional development were raised during initial Planning Team discussions. Here are just a few examples: Which organizations are the foremost providers of professional development for CPS teachers and …

Toward A "Formula For Success"--Using Oral Histories To Help Students Succeed When Everything Seems To Be Working Against Them, Michelle Navarre Cleary Feb 2002

Toward A "Formula For Success"--Using Oral Histories To Help Students Succeed When Everything Seems To Be Working Against Them, Michelle Navarre Cleary

Michelle Navarre Cleary

Many of the students at Olive-Harvey College, a community college on Chicago's south side, are struggling to balance their education with low income, service sector jobs and family needs while living in communities plagued by drugs and violence. The question is how teachers can help these students to attain their educational goals, despite their life crises. To find the answer, one instructor turned to the students who had successfully completed her English 102 capstone writing course the previous fall--students who are the exception and not the rule. She interviewed 13 out of 20 students in the class and found that …

Making School To College Programs Work: Academics, Goals, And Aspirations, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Shereen F. Fogel

Linda Serra Hagedorn

As many of the other chapters have indicated, the existence of special programs designed to assist urban, rural, and minority youth from low-income areas to attain college degrees and subsequent occupational success, the stark reality remains --only a small number will earn a bachelor’s degree or beyond (The Condition of Education, 1999; Levine & Nidiffer, 1997; Bureau of the Census, 1997). As Swail and Perna have indicated, the government, private foundations, and others have instituted many programs to counteract obstacles preventing these students from going to college. But despite the proliferation of programs, there remains a lack of research to …

Education—Soviet Style, Nurgul Kinderbaeva, Linda Serra Hagedorn

Linda Serra Hagedorn

The nature of the Soviet educational system has been developing in accordance with the Soviet Union's 70-year history. During these years that the Soviet Union was controlled by the communist party, it developed an ideology centered on communist party doctrine. Also, under the leadership of different rulers the system of Soviet Education passed through many changes and reforms. Consequently, it is difficult to describe the entire history of soviet education in brief since it is such a broad topic and comprehensive from its political and ideological perspective.

Maps-Ii Study Final Report For The Initiative “Museums And Public Schools” On Behalf Of Museums In The Park And Chicago Public Schools, Steven R. Rogg

Steven R Rogg

The Museums and Public Schools (MAPS) initiative intends to “create a lasting impact on teaching and learning by integrating museum resources into the educational process and serve as a national model.” It is conceived as a “sustained partnership of museums and schools, students and teachers,” engaging them in “authentic learning experiences.” This is to be accomplished primarily via the explicit incorporation of relevant (as indicated by the Chicago Academic Standards) cultural, historical, and scientific resources of Chicago’s world-class museums into the curriculum of Chicago Public Schools. The result is to be an experience of education that is powerfully rich, engaging, …
