Simple: A Proposal For A Synchronous Internet Music Performance Learning Environment, Fredrick Miller
Simple: A Proposal For A Synchronous Internet Music Performance Learning Environment, Fredrick Miller
Fred Miller
This paper proposes an Internet based e-learning environment for building ensemble playing proficiency for musicians. With the growing availability of broadband connections, the Internet offers new opportunities for musicians to play together synchronously from disparate locations. An e-learning environment for ensemble music performance would facilitate and simplify the creation of ensemble performance skills by offering a number of services for musicians. It would emphasize the learning of tacit musical knowledge particularly important to improvisational music performances. The heart of this e-learning initiative is the use of a proposed new tool set to enable real-time synchronous rehearsals among musicians at different …

Many authors write books and papers about deficits in second language teaching and competence, shining a spotlight on what teachers are doing “wrong” or what students are lacking. In this volume, Diane Belcher and Ulla Connor set out to provide a model that bypasses these negative perspectives and showcases success stories in second (or nth) language learning. The result is a compilation of auto-ethnographies from 18 adults with successful professional careers who were asked to provide their “L1/L2 literacy autobiograph(ies)” (p. 209).

The work discusses the management of newspapers in Nigerian university libraries with reference to the Library of the Federal University of Technology Owerri. It notes that newspapers are acquired by subscription through a well-established vendor or directly from the publishers. Political, economic, social and intellectual problems hinder the continuous subscription of newspapers. The processing of newspaper involves stamping and recording using standard forms and registers or loose sheets. Such processing requires adequate work surface. Newspapers are made available for use on display racks or newspaper folders while articles are located using in-housed developed indexes. The preservation of newspapers poses some …

In 2000 IMSA and the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Project 2061 established a partnership, IMSA 2061, to offer unique and nationally recognized professional development programs for mathematics and science teachers and education leaders. Participants in the IMSA 2061 professional development programs learn to use the tools, research, and experiences of education reform to enable all students to achieve the learning expressed in state and national standards. Activities described in this report fall into two categories, Introductory Workshops and long-term programs with districts. IMSA 2061 Introductory Workshops help educators become aware of how to apply Project 2061 publications …

As the ABET process in each institution moves toward outcomes assessment, it pushes each program to develop and implement its outcome assessment plans. Assessment plans document how programs will gather data, interpret the findings, and use the results to make improvements in programs, curricula, and resources. The ABET team at North Carolina State University (faculty from each engineering discipline along with assessment-knowledgeable personnel) has developed a model that academic programs within the College of Engineering use to determine what data to gather, where to obtain the data, and what criteria may be most appropriate when interpreting the data. This paper …

When biography first gained recognition as a genre for adults, it was not considered an appropriate form of literature for children. As it began to gain a place in children's literature, as was true of most books written for children at the time, biography was used as a tool for teaching children to emulate the hero.

Census 2001 has revealed a deterioration in the juvenile malefemale sex ratio in Kerala. Hospital birth records can help establish sex ratios at birth and thus the prevalence of female foeticide. However, civil society and the state will need to pitch in to check the misuse of technology for female foeticide in Kerala

The Northeast Ohio Model Schools Institute (NOMSI) provided professional development for school-based leadership teams in standards-based mathematics and science teaching practices and leadership skills. Leadership teams from six local school districts were recruited to attend a two-week summer institute in August 2001, which focused on national standards, principles of effective professional development, an understanding of the conditions necessary for change. One or two faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences at each university also participated in the summer institute. Teams prepared a professional development plan for their school or district and received a mini-grant to implement their plan. Coaches—experts …

Museum Educators' Workshop Study: Attracting And Retaining Teachers In Museum-Sponsored Professional Development Programs, Steven R. Rogg
Steven R Rogg
In preparation for the Museum Educator’s Workshop, the Planning Team saw that a necessary first step would be to honor the perspectives of Chicago Public School (CPS) teachers and principals. Changes in Illinois Teacher Recertification requirements, changes within the CPS itself, and nation-wide developments in the teaching profession suggested that a fresh look at Chicago’s professional development landscape would be necessary. Indeed, many relevant questions about the role(s) of museums in teacher professional development were raised during initial Planning Team discussions. Here are just a few examples: Which organizations are the foremost providers of professional development for CPS teachers and …

The nature of the Soviet educational system has been developing in accordance with the Soviet Union's 70-year history. During these years that the Soviet Union was controlled by the communist party, it developed an ideology centered on communist party doctrine. Also, under the leadership of different rulers the system of Soviet Education passed through many changes and reforms. Consequently, it is difficult to describe the entire history of soviet education in brief since it is such a broad topic and comprehensive from its political and ideological perspective.

Maps-Ii Study Final Report For The Initiative “Museums And Public Schools” On Behalf Of Museums In The Park And Chicago Public Schools, Steven R. Rogg
Steven R Rogg
The Museums and Public Schools (MAPS) initiative intends to “create a lasting impact on teaching and learning by integrating museum resources into the educational process and serve as a national model.” It is conceived as a “sustained partnership of museums and schools, students and teachers,” engaging them in “authentic learning experiences.” This is to be accomplished primarily via the explicit incorporation of relevant (as indicated by the Chicago Academic Standards) cultural, historical, and scientific resources of Chicago’s world-class museums into the curriculum of Chicago Public Schools. The result is to be an experience of education that is powerfully rich, engaging, …

This paper discusses popular notions of how grammar should be presented in the ESL classroom. Reference will especially be made to recent empirical and theoretical bases to grammar instruction which incorporate the role of various language sub-systems and acquisition processes. Drawing particularly on the findings of a study that examines the roles of meaning and structural aspects in processing language, this paper will make suggestions for grammar instruction in Malaysia.
