The purpose of this study was to compare the expectations of kindergarten teachers and parents of pre-school-aged children on school readiness. Clarifying expectations can provide guidance and direction for parents in order to prepare their children in ways that meet teachers expectations.

The subjects of this study were parents of pre-school-aged children and kindergarten teachers from the Rochester area. A survey was distributed to determine which readiness skills both parents and teachers found as critical for entrance into kindergarten.

This project explored the uses of literacy artifacts in the dramatic play of preschool children from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds who live in poverty in Kalamazoo County. The purpose of this 9-week study was to determine the impact of adult modeling on the frequency and quality of use of literacy artifacts during the dramatic play of at-risk preschoolers. An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Sight Words Learned In Kindergarten And Reading Ability In First Grade, Paul D. Kesler

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between kindergarten sight word recognition and first grade reading ability. The subjects included 20 first graders in an urban school who had been in the researcher's kindergarten class. In kindergarten, the students were instructed in recognizing 135 sight words. The sight words were comprised from the Dolch List as well as words that were frequently used in the classroom. Their recognition of sight words varied from 10-135.

The view of language as a process has influenced the use of qualitative assessment techniques that allow the description of children's progress, interests, and instructional needs. The development of a print-rich learning environment can facilitate the integration of the curriculum. A literature base representative of the different genres can contribute to the dimensions of learning. A literature-based unit on apples provided kindergarten children with quality literature experiences and many expressive activities that extended the students' understanding of the concept of apples.
