Abortion is the premature expulsion of the fetus from the dam and usually occurs because the fetus has died in-utero. If death occurs at 1-2 months of gestation, it is usually termed “early embryonic death.”

Universities and natural science museums have a long, productive history; however, this has been an uneasy alliance in the United States at least since the 1880s. Decreasing resources and increasing expectations have made the position of all museum directors extremely difficult, but the situation for university natural science museum directors is probably the most complicated among these because they direct museums that are small administrative units within larger university organizations. The objective of this study was the research of novel and inexpensive sources of polysaccharides degrading enzymes such as amylases and glucanases from local plants in order to justify their biotechnological applications. The isolation of two l3-amylases and an endo-1,3-ß-D-glucanase was reached using common protein purification methods such as buffer extraction, ammonium sulfate fractionation, ionexchange and gel filtration chromatographies. The methods used were simple and easily reproducible, suggesting the possibilfty of large-scale production. ln the crude extract of Curculigo pilosa tuber, only ß-amylase was detected as starch degrading enzyme and its activity was approximately 282 Uig of fresh material. "A Comparison Of The Use Of Exercise As A Leisure Activity For Anorexic And Bulimic Teenage Girls To A Control Group", Sara Beth Mccracken

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to determine if the leisure activities of anorexic and bulimic teenage girls differ from those of a control group and to determine the difference between the two groups in their commitment to exercise. Two surveys, the State Technical Institute's Leisure Assessment Process (STILAP) and the Commitment to Exercise Scale, were distributed to anorexic and bulimic teenage girls in an Omaha, Nebraska, treatment facility. The surveys were also given to a control group made up of teenage girls in two Omaha area high schools. Six girls participated in the anorexic and bulimic group and 18 …

Stress And Burnout In Female High School Athletic Directors, Jeffrey J. Martin, Betty Kelley, Candice Dias

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

In the current study we examined the relationships between stress predictors, stress, and burnout in female high school athletic directors (N = 52). Significant negative correlations between stress and hardiness and between stress and number of social support providers were found. Significant positive correlations between stress and time concerns, personnel concerns, and program success (e.g., winning) subscales of the athletic directing issues scale were also found. Subjects high in hardiness and with adequate social support networks, who also reported few athletic directing issues, were likely to report minimal stress. Significant positive correlations also indicated that stress was related to …

The purpose of this study was to determine reasons why few African Americans are in leadership positions in the urban agriculture industry. The lack of leaders will probably continue because there is a dearth of African Americans enrolled in agriculture programs at colleges and universities in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Six research questions guided the study in its endeavor to determine perceptions about the urban agriculture industry. Data were collected through surveys and interviews. A background questionnaire, developed by the researcher collected data on age, academic interests, urban background, exposure to agriculture occupations, and factors that affected selection of college …

Wolves And Bears: An Interdisciplinary Activity Guide For Grades 3-5, Susan L. Thomas

All Graduate Projects

A popular set of "Discovery Boxes" are used by educators across North Central Washington. These boxes are administered by the U.S. Forest Service and focus on such themes as wolves, bears, fire, plants and forests. These boxes are available to be checked out to educators for two-week periods, and reach approximately 9,000 students annually. Each box contains "hands-on" props which enhance the learning of each theme. Some of the boxes have activity guides in them to assist the educator in teaching the theme and thus using the box to its full potential. Two of the most popular boxes, the wolf …

Modifying Teacher Behaviors To Promote Critical Thinking In K-12 Physical Education, Frances Cleland, John Helion, Frank F. Fry

This study examined four physical educators' teaching behaviors before and after an intervention. The study was conducted over the span of three 15-week academic semesters. Phase 1 of the study involved videotaping the participants' instruction prior to intervention. In Phase 2, participants were involved in two workshops planned to convey teaching strategies related to promoting critical thinking in physical education. In addition, participants and co-investigators team-taught three sample lessons focused on incorporating teaching behaviors attempting to foster critical thinking. Data collection was completed during Phase 3 by videotaping each teacher during one unit of instruction. A chi-square analysis of post-intervention …

Controlled pollination in field cages is used at the United States Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Research Service North Central Regional Plane Introduction Station (NCRPIS) for seed increase of several plane species. Honey bees, Apis mellifera L., have been used almost exclusively for several years. Recently we began investigating other pollinating insects for controlled pollination. 0smia cornifrons (Radoszkowski), a solitary bee imported from Japan, has been an excellent early-season pollinator. We placed domiciles of these bees in backyards of the NCRPIS staff to aid us in providing adequate numbers of bees for use in field cages the following growing season. …

Distribution And Persistence Of Phyllachora Species On Poaceae In Iowa, A. C. Gabel, L. H. Tiffany

Phytlachora spp. on Poaceae were collected to determine species present, grass hosts and distribution in Iowa. From 1959-1996 the fungus was collected 240 times from 67 different sites in 35 counties. Seven species of Phytlachora were collected on 25 species from 13 genera of grasses. P. graminis was collected 89 times from 43 sites on four species of Agropyron, two species of Calamagrostis, three species of Elymus, Hystrix patula, Panicum virgatum, and Setaria glauca. Seventy-two specimens of P. luteo-maculata on Andropogon gerardii or Schiziichyrium scoparium were collected from 30 sites. The study included 20 collections of P. cynodontis on Bouteloua …
