Performances: Assessment Resource Kit, Margaret Forster, Geoff N. Masters Jan 1996

Performances: Assessment Resource Kit, Margaret Forster, Geoff N. Masters

Assessment Resource Kit

The assessment of some kinds of learning requires the observation of student performances. Examples include playing a musical instrument, dancing, using scientific apparatus, operating equipment, performing gymnastics routines, diving, problem-solving in a group, applying ball-handling skills, and participating in small group discussions. 'Performance assessment' is the assessment of students as they engage in an activity. It is the on-the-spot evaluation of performance, behaviour or interaction. This issue on the assessment of performances in the Assessment Resource Kit (ARK) magazine series contains five articles: 1. What is performance assessment? 2. Informal classroom observations; 3. Classroom performance assessment 'events'; 4. When comparability …

Projects: Assessment Resource Kit, Margaret Forster, Geoff N. Masters

Assessment Resource Kit

Projects are extended pieces of work completed over a period of time. They are investigations which involve the collection, organisation, evaluation, and presentation of material or data. Projects are usually completed by individuals or small groups of students with the teacher acting as supervisor. This issue of the Assessment Resource Kit (ARK) magazine series is intended to give teachers a deeper understanding of how to assess student projects. Topics covered in the five articles include: what is project assessment, ways of assessing the process of project work, ways of assessing the end products of project work, comparing student projects and …

The Impact Of Prekindergarten Participation Upon Academic Placement, Mary Suddarth Jan 1996

The Impact Of Prekindergarten Participation Upon Academic Placement, Mary Suddarth

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine whether participation in the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Prekindergarten Program for Children At Risk of Academic Failure had impact on a child's future academic placement. Current uncertainty regarding continued ISBE or federal funding of programs makes such a longitudinal study imperative. This study examined the 1995-1996 academic placement, including additional resources required, i.e., Title 1, speech, or learning disabled services, for 40 children who participated in the 1990-1991 Hamilton-Jefferson Counties Educational Service Region cooperative prekindergarten program in Jefferson County. Results indicated that all children reached expected placement, regardless of one …

Accounting For And Quantifying Dependencies In Dichotomous Test Data, Barry Sheridan Jan 1996

Accounting For And Quantifying Dependencies In Dichotomous Test Data, Barry Sheridan

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper reports on a strategy employing the Extended Logistic Model of Rasch to quantify dependencies in dichotomous test data by providing standard errors of measurement which are commensurate with the loss in information arising from dependencies among subsets of items. Data collected for the Australian Scholastic Aptitude Test were analysed and shown to exhibit strong dependencies among the items involved. A technique is presented for estimating the number of equivalent independent items (found to be 74 in this study) to the original test number (100).

An Evaluation Of The Norfolk Interagency Consortium's Community-Based System Of Care For At-Risk Youth, Melody Bingman Wilt

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The primary purpose of this research was to design and to implement an evaluation model for the Norfolk Interagency Consortium (NIC). The research design employed in this study focused on four areas of investigation: program clarification, processes and activities, outcomes, and cost. The study utilized qualitative and quantitative methods and procedures.

The program clarification stage of the research served as a pre-evaluative phase. An evaluability assessment was incorporated to define and clarify the NIC'S program components and goals, and determine which goals were evaluable. Data regarding the target population also were collected.

The processes and activities investigation used a survey …

Teacher's Perceptions Of The Introduction Of A Middle School Within A Western Australian Independent Girls' School, S. M. Lienert

Theses : Honours

In 1995 an independent girls' school in Perth, Western Australia, decided to introduce a Middle School. 'This meant changing the traditional structure of grouping children aged between 5 and 12 years into primary school and children aged between 13 and 17 years into secondary school. The aim of the Middle School was to provide increased educational opportunities for 12 to 14 year old students. When the introduction of a Middle School was announced teaching staff expressed a number of concerns with respect to their new roles and the new school operations. These concerns raised questions about whether years of teaching …

Adolescent Suicide: The Implication Of Coping, Family Functioning And Their Interactions For Prevention And Intervention, Ronald F. Bobner, David M. Weis, Carolyn Ridenour, Pam Gulley Smith, Kathy Kormos, Ben E. Lanpher

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

It has become apparent over the past ten years that the role of the family has been identified as an increasingly significant variable with regard to adolescent suicide. Some authors go as far as to say that "family related factors appear to be, very little information is available about the family characteristics of youths that kill themselves. Furthermore, family characteristics of youths who attempt suicide are often described as a side feature of investigations of other factors, and these generally focus on the family characteristics only after an attempt has occurred. Little is known about those family factors that are …

Let's Surf-The-Net! World-Wide Web (Www) Sites In Italy, Or: How/Why Include A Web-Browser Component In Culture And Civilization Classes, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

First, this essay details the technical elements required to set up a computer for Web-surfing, then it discusses the rationale for a Web-browser component in Culture and Civilization courses. The first part of this study (the technical portion) is geared specifically toward teachers with little or no familiarity with the Internet and the World-Wide Web. In the second part of the article, the applied-pedagogy aspects of Web-browsing are provided for all colleagues in the profession, proficient or not in cyberspace surfing. This article argues that the internet and the World-Wide Web are here to stay and that, within certain limitations, …

Data were obtained from the student records system and two self-administered mail out questionnaires. The study population was predominantly female, in their early thirties, living in Western Australia, had completed their …

The Effect Of Assessment Procedures On Student Learning Outcomes In Religious Education In One Catholic Secondary School In Western Australia, Philip F. Cox Jan 1996

The Effect Of Assessment Procedures On Student Learning Outcomes In Religious Education In One Catholic Secondary School In Western Australia, Philip F. Cox

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study investigates the effect of utilising formal assessment procedures on student learning in the religious education classroom. There is a debate in the religious education literature concerning the place of assessment in religious education. This debate is reflected in the divisions that occur amongst teachers of religious education in Catholic schools. The debate has been polarised with an uncertain group being left between the two extremes. Teachers of religious education in Catholic schools are uncertain as to the best teaching methodology to utilise. This thesis outlines the philosophical arguments concerning the place of assessment in religious education in Catholic …

Occupational Stress, A Cross-Sectional And Logitudinal Analysis, Nigel V. Jones Jan 1996

Occupational Stress, A Cross-Sectional And Logitudinal Analysis, Nigel V. Jones

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study investigated the presence of occupational stress among teachers. It did not set out to identify and explain variables associated with stress among teachers, rather the study focussed on the multitude of variables identified in the literature and sought to include these in a more extensive causal model. The study was conducted in two main stages. Firstly, a cross-sectional survey investigated the presence of stress among 230 teachers, as measured by Psychological Stress, Physical Health, Job Satisfaction and & desire to Leave their Job. The survey obtained information on stress outcome variables (Psychological Stress, Physical Health, Job Satisfaction and …

The Sources Of The Evidence, Petra Lietz Dec 1995

The Sources Of The Evidence, Petra Lietz

Dr Petra Lietz

In this chapter, the data collected from two large international studies conducted by the IEA, namely the 1970-71 Reading Comprehension Study and the 1990-91 Reading Literacy Study ample have been described. Information gathered in eight countries that participated in both studies at itudy. the 14-year-old level, namely Belgium (French), Finland, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden and the U.S., constitute the body of data under consideration. This international evidence is used in the present study in the search for general structural and causal models of reading comprehension that apply across countries. On the one hand, the two studies share …

Curriculum Provision In Rural Secondary Schools, Phil Mckenzie, Ross Harrold, Andrew Sturman Dec 1995

Curriculum Provision In Rural Secondary Schools, Phil Mckenzie, Ross Harrold, Andrew Sturman

Dr Phillip McKenzie

This book investigates various views, including those that say students in rural secondary schools are disadvantaged by comparison with urban students, and that rural and remote schools are excessively expensive to operate. Using qualitative materials derived from case studies of schools in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, together with qualitative analyses of recent, detailed information collected by schools, the authors provide evidence that rural and remote schools provide a curriculum directly comparable with urban schools, and that students (regardless of differences of gender or social grouping) are better served in the quality of their educational experience than many have …

International Comparative Research In Education, Petra Lietz Dec 1995

International Comparative Research In Education, Petra Lietz

Dr Petra Lietz

Internationally comparative research in education which is aimed at investigating the relationships and processes that explain possible differences between educational systems has so far relied on the replication of the same analysis using different data sets. Patterns of results from these analyses have allowed for the examination of differences, uniquenesses or similarities of the way in which factors operated in various countries. However, it has not been possible to test the extent to which effects varied across countries. Recent technological and methodological advances have made it possible to move beyond replication to the systematic and rigorous testing of structural and …

In Search Of General Structural Models For Reading Comprehension Across Countries Using Simultaneous Analysis, Petra Lietz Dec 1995

In Search Of General Structural Models For Reading Comprehension Across Countries Using Simultaneous Analysis, Petra Lietz

Dr Petra Lietz

The previous chapter focused on the application of simultaneous analysis to investigate structural models of reading comprehension. Results of the simultaneous analysis of data sets from eight countries and on two occasions showed that it was consistent with the evidence to assume a general factor underlying the ability to read with comprehension at the 14-year-old level. Hence, it can be argued that reading comprehension beyond the initial stages involves a general ability that is similarly structured across cultures and across time. As a consequence, it is meaningful and of considerable interest to compare levels of reading achievement and examine the …

The Move Beyond Replication: What Are Its Benefits, Petra Lietz Dec 1995

The Move Beyond Replication: What Are Its Benefits, Petra Lietz

Dr Petra Lietz

Results presented in this monograph have emphasized that analytical efforts should seek to apply techniques that are appropriate to the structure of the available data. Moreover, the application of simultaneous and conjunct analyses across countries has illustrated that the use of appropriate techniques does contribute important information to the understanding of educational phenomena that would not necessarily be revealed by the analysis of data within a particular country. In this way, the present study has shown that internationally comparative research can provide useful explanations of phenomena involving educational outcomes as well as the processes influencing such outcomes. In summary, the …

Gender Differences In Reading Comprehension Across Countries, Petra Lietz Dec 1995

Gender Differences In Reading Comprehension Across Countries, Petra Lietz

Dr Petra Lietz

In this chapter, hierarchical linear modeling is applied to investigate possible gender differences in reading achievement. First, a two-level hierarchical linear analysis is undertaken for each country on each occasion separately. This application of analysis serves to examine the robustness of relationships among variables and to prepare for the subsequent conjunct analysis in which gender differences across countries are examined. The results of the analyses provide evidence with respect to (a) differences in the reading comprehension of female and male students within countries, (b) differences in the reading comprehension of mainly female and mainly male instructional groups within countries; (c) …

International Comparisons Through Simultaneous And Conjunct Analysis: A Search For General Relationships Across Countries, Petra Lietz Dec 1995

International Comparisons Through Simultaneous And Conjunct Analysis: A Search For General Relationships Across Countries, Petra Lietz

Dr Petra Lietz

The results presented here indicated that it was not unreasonable to assume that factor loadings and factor correlations should be invariant across the eight countries. When item uniquenesses were set to be invariant, a decrease in fit according to the RNI and TLI was observed. The PRNI, in contrast, showed the highest value for the model in which invariance was assumed for all parameters in the model. The overall superiority of the no invariance model, however, suggests that while the parcels and items which were used to form indicators demonstrate consistently high loadings on their respective factors across all groups, …
