In Pursuit Of Persistence: A Qualitative Investigation Of Community College Stopouts' Attempts To Obtain A College Degree, Doris Jean Ivie
Doctoral Dissertations
Twelve community college stopouts (current students who had stopped attending college for at least one semester in the past and who had since re-enrolled) who fit the "success" criterion of having achieved sophomore status and of maintaining at least a 3.00 grade-point average were interviewed using nonstructured reflective interview techniques. An Exploration Of Cognitive And Metacognitive Performance With Cognet Mle Treatment And No Treatment Control Students, Martha Mcbrayer Jones
Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigated the effects of the Cognitive Enrichment Network (COGNET) mediated learning instructional approach, an approach based on Feuerstein's theory of structural cognitive modifiability, on cognitive and metacognitive variables. COGNET and control subjects were in grades K-3 and were from two schools in rural Tennessee. They were identified as potential subjects by being former Head Start participants, receiving free lunch, or by teacher referral for at risk status. They participated in the study for two years. Students were videotaped during the pre- and post-test administrations of the Cognitive Functioning Analysis Instrument. From these videos, the cognitive phase durations …

Changes In Curricula Design And The Effect On Transfer Of Learning In Remedial Mathematics Students, Gladys Hayes Crates
Doctoral Dissertations
The purposes of this study included examination of curricular and instructional integration of mathematics and the sciences in a basic mathematics/elementary algebra course to see if it would (1) result in greater achievement in mathematics, (2) result in greater achievement in chemistry, (3) encourage transfer of learning from mathematics to chemistry, (4) result in more positive attitudes towards mathematics, and (5) would lessen anxiety levels towards mathematics. This study, conducted at Chattanooga State Technical Community College during the 1991-92 academic year, used a control/experimental design.
