On September 14, 1994 a memorial service was held for one of the veterinary professions premiere leaders, Dr. Richard Talbot. Dr. Talbot died in the crash of USAir flight 427 in Pittsburgh on September 8. He was returning to the Virginia-Maryland Blacksburg campus after a two-day meeting of the AVMA Committee on Veterinary Medical Informatics.

Dr. Eric Davis, DVM was the 1994 recipient of the SCAVMA Teaching Award for Clinical Sciences. Dr. Davis is currently an assistant professor in the Large Animal Clinical Sciences department at the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville, TN, where he is active in equine field services and equine surgery.

As the Fall 1994 semester began, I caught a glimpse of a new student looking at the library's bookdrop with an expression of amusement and wonder. I'd forgotten that a new set of people don't know how an ugly, out-of-date piece of equipment came to be painted to resemble an elephant. I also knew that this was a place to begin to remember Sally Fry.

The annual meeting was held at the Savery Hotel on January 23, 1994. Thirty-eight members attended. President Feldman called the meeting to order. Secretary/Treasurer Hartwig gave the treasurer's report and presented the proposed budget for 1994. The budget was approved. He also reported on the College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Association, sponsored alumni receptions at various national meetings during the last year and activites with regard to the ISU Veterinarian. The recipient of the first annual Outstanding Advisor Award for the College of Veterinary Medicine was Dr. Monica O. Howard, D.V.M., Ph. D. Dr. Howard received her D.V.M. from the Tuskegee Institute in 1982, and in 1990 she received her Doctor of Philosophy in Veterinary Pathology from Oklahoma State University. She then began her current position at Iowa State University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology. Dr. Larry L. Jackson was selected as the 1994 recipient of the Norden Teaching Award. Jackson, a professor in the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department, was gratified to be recognized and remarked, "this award should keep me going for another twenty years." The Norden Teaching Award is presented annually to a faculty member who has proven to be remarkable in teaching ability, has good character and leadership abilities, and is dedicated to the profession of veterinary science and to teaching.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate specific changes made to the federal need analysis formula between aid years 1992 and 1993. The subjects examined were 1992 dependent student, firm family financial aid applicants at Iowa State University. A random sample of 200 records was drawn from a farm population of 2225 students;Aid applicant data were drawn from the institutions student aid system. These files were then reprocessed using federally approved need analysis calculators. Various computations, with and without assets, were performed using both 1992 and 1993 need analysis. This study investigated the utilization of academic support programs by African students at Iowa State University. The subjects were 75 African students from 42 countries who were enrolled at Iowa State University during Spring of 1987 to Spring of 1988. The students surveyed were approximately 56.0% of total African students enrolled. New students were not included in the study. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the influences between and among the student-centered middle school policies and practices; the adult influences of teacher engagement, teacher readiness, and principal leadership; student engagement and the factors that influence student engagement; and the protective factors that promote resiliency. This investigation had two purposes. First, the study was designed to confirm the factor structure of the Health Belief Model Inventory (HBMI) among employees of a medical center. Second, a causal model was developed and tested using HBMI components to predict exercise behavior;Data were collected from 511 employees of a regional medical center. Analysis of the data included (1) confirmatory factor analysis of the proposed model including benefits, barriers, susceptibility, social influences, cues to action, and perceived physical ability.
