Attitudes Of Elementary Principals Toward Parent Involvement In Schools In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Linda V. Brittle

The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the attitudes of principals toward parent involvement in schools. The population for the study consisted of all public school elementary principals in the Commonwealth of Virginia. A random sample procedure was employed and an instrument was developed specifically for the study. An initial and second mailing resulted in an overall response rate of 53%. Factor analysis identified 5 groupings in parent involvement. Factors were labeled: Decision-Making, Policy-Making, Home Tutor/Co-Learner, Socio-Economic Status, and Parent Desire and Expertise. The objective of this study was to determine in what ways male and female applicants to graduate school are similar or different. Secondary analysis was conducted on survey data which described attitudes and behavior of students admitted to graduate programs at Western Michigan University. The purpose was to assess the relationship between gender and curricula selected, likelihood of applying for and receiving financial aid, and the influence of marital status. A descriptive study ( 1991-1992) examined 166 closing and nonclosing UAW auto workers in two General Motors settings, as to how they cope mentally and physically with unemployment and displacement 5 years after plant closure and mass layoffs. Workers were asked the question, "Is job loss a threat, a loss, or a challenge?"

The Contribution Of Selected Cognitive And Noncognitive Variables To The Academic Success Of Medical Technology Students, Mildred Keels Fuller

The research problem for this study assessed the relationship of cognitive and noncognitive variables to the academic success of African-American versus Caucasian medical technology students attending traditionally black institutions versus majority institutions. Academic success was defined as cumulative grade point average, cumulative clinical practica grades, and graduation status. The cognitive variable was the preclinical cumulative grade point average, and the noncognitive variables were the noncognitive subscale scores.

Familial Drinking History, Gender, And Family Environment As Predictors Of Alcohol Use Patterns And Psychological Adjustment Among College Students , Richard Allen Martin

This study examined the effects of parental alcoholism, gender, and family environment on alcohol use patterns and psychological adjustment of a non-clinical sample of college students. Participants were 543 students from introductory psychology courses at a large midwestern university. Adult children of alcoholics (ACAs) were found to have greater perceived external locus of control and greater problematic alcohol use than adult children of non-alcoholics. These findings were primarily attributable to differences in gender and family functioning. This study of teacher education students' self-efficacy was based on Bandura's self-efficacy theory. A critical review of the literature about self-efficacy and teachers explores its "fit" with Bandura's theoretical model. Particular attention is given to the widely used and adapted two factor teacher efficacy scale developed by Gibson and Dembow. The controversy over definitions and interpretations of the constructs is evidence of need for further study. The data from a randomly selected sample of 545 middle and high school-aged adolescents across the state of Iowa were studied to examine the means through which social stress is associated with depressive symptoms. Social stress is assumed to be socially determined by unjust social distributions of power and resources that place certain individuals and groups under greatest social pressure and give rise to situations that limit their access to already limited resources, obstruct alternative behavior options, and create unjustified interpersonal tension. Examines the experience of midlife and the expectations of midlife and aging of 22 Caucasian, African American, Latina, Chinese, and Asian-Indian midlife women, ages 40 to 60, who differ in sexual orientation, income, employment, marital and parenting status. Influenced by social and family expectations for women in their early years, most women expected midlife would include husband, home and family. This was a descriptive study of 140 volunteer therapists in the Richmond, Virginia metropolitan area who identified themselves as either "brief" or "time-unlimited" in their practice of marital therapy. The sample, predominantly female and highly educated, had a mean age of 46.9 years.;For the purpose of this study, brief marital therapy was defined as eight or fewer therapeutic sessions within a 3-month period, and time-unlimited marital therapy was designated as therapy lasting longer than eight sessions or over 3 months.
