Japan's dramatic re-emergence as a world power in the '80s led a number of U.S. colleges and universities to incorporate courses on Japanese history, politics, culture, management practices and language into their curricula. Simultaneously, there has been a flurry of activity to develop study abroad experiences in Japan to expose American students to Japanese culture and language. Chambers and Cummings (1990) document approximately 90 programs involving a U.S. school and a Japanese partner. IACE Hall of Fame Repository

Theory and practice in the curriculum for preparation of educators of adults have seldom been addressed in the same places or time frames. Much less, there have been few attempts to bring theory and practice together in any coherent way. Nevertheless, expressions of concern and discontent from adult educators and the general adult populace involved in learning experiences abound which question "why do adult educators violate in their own programs everything that is known about how adults learn?" However, comments of satisfaction with the current situation may prompt one to suggest that theory and practice relationship will not be resolved, …

The Iowa Department of Education has mandated that all schools develop a global education program. Clough (1994) reports that "the globalization of American society has greatly increased the incentives for individuals in all parts of the country to become more involved in world affairs" (p. 4) . Therefore, it is important that the attitudes of educators toward global education and the implementation of global education be studied.

The purposes of this study were to identify the attitudes of public high school principals and social studies …

Japanese And American Education: A Comparative Study, Naomi R. Mercer Jan 1994

Japanese And American Education: A Comparative Study, Naomi R. Mercer

Honors Theses

While living in Japan as an exchange student, many different aspects of Japanese culture, especially the Japanese education system, fascinated me. Their system demanded so much from children and determined the paths their lives would take based upon two or three long and complicated tests. My college friends had obviously survived the rigors of the schools system and, as I eventually realized, succeeded. All of the publicity that Japanese education received in the United States as a model system made me curious to know whether the stories in magazines and on the 6 o'clock news held any truth or if …
