Factors That Motivate Washington State Teachers To Participate In Professional Growth And Development, Dolores Adan Heisinger Jan 1994

Factors That Motivate Washington State Teachers To Participate In Professional Growth And Development, Dolores Adan Heisinger

Dissertations and Theses

The major focus of this study was the identification of factors that motivate teachers to participate in professional growth and development activities. Although teachers may be motivated to participate in staff development for different reasons, it was hypothesized that common factors forming an identifiable incentive profile could be found. Within the focus of the study, three primary questions were asked: (a) What are the needs, incentives or motivators that influence teachers to further their professional development? (b) What are the relative strengths of the various needs, incentives or motivators? and (c) How do the incentive structures of teachers differ based …

Relationship Between Student Mobility Rates And Achievement Test Scores In The Illinois District Of Georgetown-Ridge Farm, Kevin A. Tate

Masters Theses

A study was done to see if high student mobility rates were related to achievement scores at the third and fifth grade levels for students in the Illinois School District of Georgetown - Ridge Farm. Student mobility and the 3rd and 5th grade achievement test scores of seventh and eighth grade students were examined. A mobile student was considered one that had not attended at least six and one half out of the seven educational years in kindergarten through grade six.

The findings of this study showed no major differences in achievement test scores of the stable student group compared …

Special Educators, Employers, And Special Students: A Comparison Of Perceptions Of The Working World, Lena Arrington-Mcclenny Jan 1994

Special Educators, Employers, And Special Students: A Comparison Of Perceptions Of The Working World, Lena Arrington-Mcclenny

Theses & Honors Papers

Education is designed to prepare all students for productive citizenship. Students with disabilities, however, are employed at lower rates, earning less money, and accruing fewer benefits than their nondisabled peers. In order to design a curriculum that targets employment as an outcome, special educators must determine the needs and expectations of employers. This study compared the perceptions of employers, special education teachers, to learning disabled students .Employers and special education teachers rated work related, communication, personal, and social skills similarly while students with learning disabilities formed in congruent perceptions of the working world.

Examining The Need For An Elementary/Middle To Secondary School Level Transition Plan For Students With Learning Disabilities, Deborah C. Roller

Theses & Honors Papers

The need for a transition plan to ease the progression of students with learning disabilities from the elementary and middle school grades to the secondary environment was examined in this study. Surveys were distributed and completed by 30 special education teachers in grades 5-8, 10 special education-learning disabilities teachers in grades 9-10, and 42 regular education-content area teachers in one school system. In addition to demographic data on respondents, information was gathered on instruction and student ability in the areas of academic skills, academic support skills, and social/behavioral skills. The characteristics of current modes and levels of planning were also …

The Effectiveness Of An Intervention Program To Improve Performance Of Low-Achieving Students On The Literacy Passport Test, Harriet Elizabeth Bauer

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in achievement scores and pass rates on Virginia's Literacy Passport Test between students who volunteered for and received additional instruction, students who volunteered for but did not receive the instruction, and students who neither volunteered for nor received interventional instruction in a program for rising sixth graders identified as potentially at-risk of initially failing the LPT.;It was hypothesized that (1) volunteers' scores of those who attended the summer program would show higher achievement and pass rates than either the scores of the volunteers without additional instruction and …

Aids Education: The Effect Of Three Instructional Methods On Retention Of Changes In Knowledge, Attitudes, And Intention To Act, Denise Kerns Schares Jan 1994

Aids Education: The Effect Of Three Instructional Methods On Retention Of Changes In Knowledge, Attitudes, And Intention To Act, Denise Kerns Schares

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of three instructional methods (unit only, unit plus infusion, and infusion only) for teaching high school students about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Education, offered consistently and over time, can assist individuals in developing positive health behaviors associated with the prevention of AIDS. Successful implementation of community and school-based education programs can save lives in the years ahead (Taff,1987).

Four sections (N = 80) of a health education course were randomly assigned to one of four treatment conditions. The unit only treatment consisted of the presentation of the 4-session, Red …

Exposure To Electronic Entertainment Media And Student Outcomes In Two Demographically Diverse Elementary Schools, Ronald W. Busby Jan 1994

Exposure To Electronic Entertainment Media And Student Outcomes In Two Demographically Diverse Elementary Schools, Ronald W. Busby

Dissertations

Problem. Standardized test-score results have declined sharply and learning difficulties have risen significantly during the decades that electronic entertainment media (EEM) have become a national phenomenon. Exposure to electronic entertainment media has generated much speculation, discussion, and study. Research, however, is lacking on how sensory overload impinges upon the brain and mind of developing children with respect to learning and adapting socially. Thus, research is needed that addresses sensory overload phenomena and academic performance and social behavior.

Methodology. The population consisted of 349 third- and fourth-grade children in a demographically diverse public school district located in southwestern Michigan.

The Time …

Case Studies Of The Structure, Dynamics, And Outcomes Of Interdisciplinary Team Organization In Oregon Middle Schools, Gail Lyon Jan 1994

Case Studies Of The Structure, Dynamics, And Outcomes Of Interdisciplinary Team Organization In Oregon Middle Schools, Gail Lyon

Dissertations and Theses

Middle school literature advocates interdisciplinary team organization as a structure that enhances student learning and teacher satisfaction. In an interdisciplinary team, teachers responsible for different content areas collaboratively plan the instructional program for a shared group of students. Yet, fewer than fifty percent of the nation's middle schools use an interdisciplinary team structure, and research indicates that teams are fragile and temporary. Few studies were found that described interdisciplinary team organization at the team or individual teacher level.

The purpose of this case study is to describe the structure, dynamics, and outcomes of interdisciplinary teams of teachers in middle schools. …

Victorian Modern Cursive Handwriting In West Australian Schools, Deborah Ann Taylor Jan 1994

Victorian Modern Cursive Handwriting In West Australian Schools, Deborah Ann Taylor

Theses : Honours

The Victorian Modern Cursive script was introduced to Western Australia as the newly recommended handwriting style in 1990. The choice of this handwriting style, which is a foundation style similar to the Simple Modern Hand (Gourdie, 1981), was based upon the prediction that its use would facilitate the transition from beginners' script to full cursive writing. This assumption has not been tested in West Australian schools and hitherto no evaluation of the new handwriting model has been conducted. This study set out to evaluate and compare the legibility and fluency of cursive writing of a group of Year 3 children …

Academic Achievement Motivation In Hispanic Students, Lisa A. Schuck Jan 1994

Academic Achievement Motivation In Hispanic Students, Lisa A. Schuck

Masters Theses

There is a lack of research on academic achievement motivation in Hispanic students, and instruments which measure achievement motivation have not been validated with Hispanic students. Fifteen regular-education teachers rated 67 third through fifth grade Hispanic students on the Teacher Rating of Academic Achievement Motivation (TRAAM). Students completed the Achievement Motivation Scale (AMS). Construct validity was investigated by examining the relationship of the TRAAM with the AMS. Criterion-related validity was established by examining the relationship of the TRAAM with Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) scores and grades. The TRAAM, AMS, Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) scores, and grades were used to …

Mapping Student Achievement, Geoff Masters, Ray Adams, Jan Lokan Dec 1993

Mapping Student Achievement, Geoff Masters, Ray Adams, Jan Lokan

Prof Geoff Masters AO

The analyses, publications and reports of quantitative data in education and the social sciences usually omit basic information on the construct measured. Probabilistic models for test data make it possible to delineate coherent and richly described measurement continua that facilitate interpretation of student achievement. The potential of conjoint measurement to bring about fundamental advances in educational testing practice lies in part in the opportunities it provides to build useful maps of learning domains and to use those maps in communicating student achievements. This chapter presents two applications of conjoint measurement aimed at constructing and describing achievement variables, developing insights into …

Issues In The Measurement Of Change In Reading Achievement Over Time, Petra Lietz Dec 1993

Issues In The Measurement Of Change In Reading Achievement Over Time, Petra Lietz

Dr Petra Lietz

The analyses reported in this paper seek to examine: (1)the factor structures underlying the tests employed in the Reading Comprehension and the Reading Literacy Studies. In particular, it is of interest whether or not the assumption holds of a common factor or trait, that underlies the processes involved in reading comprehension, as argued by Thorndike (1973a). If this were not the case, it would not be appropriate to calculate a total score which is necessary to equate student performance over time. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) is used to examine this issue. (2)whether or not similar results are obtained across countries …

Patterns Of Interaction In The Lexical Development In Two Languages Of Bilingual Infants, Barbara Pearson, Sylvia Fernandez Dec 1993

Patterns Of Interaction In The Lexical Development In Two Languages Of Bilingual Infants, Barbara Pearson, Sylvia Fernandez

Barbara Zurer Pearson

We investigated the extent to which bilingual children follow the same patterns and timetable of lexical development as monolinguals. For a group of 20 simultaneous bilingual (English-Spanish) infants, ages 10 to 30 months, we looked at the patterns of growth in one language in relation to growth in the other and also with respect to growth in both languages combined. The MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories (CDI), standardized parent report forms in Spanish and English, provided measures of lexical growth in two languages at varying intervals within the age range. We plotted the two single-language measures, as well as Total and …

Changes In Mathematics Achievement Over The High School Years, John Ainley Dec 1993

Changes In Mathematics Achievement Over The High School Years, John Ainley

Dr John Ainley

One of the important developments in the way achievement is used in studies of school and individual influences on learning has been the use of achievement growth rather than a static achievement score as an outcome. As part of a longitudinal study of students' progress through the later years of high school, mathematics achievement was assessed in Year 9 (in 1987) and Year 12 (in 1990). In both year levels students completed a modified version of the Progressive Achievement Test in Mathematics 3A. This test measures generalised mathematical performance rather than achievement specific to students' current studies. Scores at both …

Cortical Type 2 Astrocytes Are Not Dye Coupled Nor Do They Express The Major Gap Junction Genes Found In The Central Nervous System, Daniel Belliveau, C. Naus Dec 1993

Cortical Type 2 Astrocytes Are Not Dye Coupled Nor Do They Express The Major Gap Junction Genes Found In The Central Nervous System, Daniel Belliveau, C. Naus

Daniel J. Belliveau

The O‐2A progenitor cell first described from the rat optic nerve is a bipotential precursor of oligodendrocytes and type 2 astrocytes. Each cell expresses specific markers that distinguish them as unique cell types. O‐2A progenitors cultured in high serum preferentially differntiate into type 2 astrocytes and when exposed to defined medium or low serum develop along the oligodendrocyte lineage. We analyzed the gap junction gene expression of type 2 astrocytes to determine if they are coupled to form a syncytium, like their type 1 astrocyte counterparts. Dye coupling experiments demonstrated that cortical type 2 astrocytes are not coupled, while type …
