Proposal For A Dod Combined Battlefield Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) Initiative, George H. Baker Iii Oct 1993

Proposal For A Dod Combined Battlefield Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) Initiative, George H. Baker Iii

Department of Integrated Science and Technology - Faculty Scholarship

The presentation emphasizes the growing importance of electromagnetic survivability and compatibility. Operation Desert Storm demonstrated the clear military advantage provided by sophisticated electronic weapon and communication systems. In addition, the offensive tactic of taking out the enemy's eyes and ears during the air war paid off, giving our military decisive air superiority. The lessons for the future are clear. High-tech electronics now so dominates the battlefield that the outcome of future conflicts could well be decided by electronics attrition rather than human casualties. Our Desert Storm experience thus accentuates the importance of guaranteeing that our electronic systems will not ...

Schools Respond To Risk Management Programs For Asbestos, Lead In Drinking Water And Radon, Ann Fisher, Lauraine G. Chestnut, Ruth H. Chapman, Robert D. Rowe Sep 1993

Schools Respond To Risk Management Programs For Asbestos, Lead In Drinking Water And Radon, Ann Fisher, Lauraine G. Chestnut, Ruth H. Chapman, Robert D. Rowe

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Based on a study of the three EPA-initiated, public school risk management programs noted in the title, the authors find that state agency involvement is an important factor in the success of such programs. They also find, e.g., that school districts are justifiably reluctant to comply with tentative programs

The Paradox Of Ideology, Justin Schwartz Jan 1993

The Paradox Of Ideology, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

A standard problem with the objectivity of social scientific theory in particular is that it is either self-referential, in which case it seems to undermine itself as ideology, or self-excepting, which seem pragmatically self-refuting. Using the example of Marx and his theory of ideology, I show how self-referential theories that include themselves in their scope of explanation can be objective. Ideology may be roughly defined as belief distorted by class interest. I show how Marx thought that natural science was informed by class interest but not therefore necessarily ideology. Capitalists have an interest in understanding the natural world (to a ...

Habitat And Distribution Of Plants Special To Iowa's Driftless Area, William P. Pusateri, Dean M. Roosa, Donald R. Farrar Jan 1993

Habitat And Distribution Of Plants Special To Iowa's Driftless Area, William P. Pusateri, Dean M. Roosa, Donald R. Farrar

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A portion of the Upper Midwest escaped glaciation during the two most recent glacial epochs. This "Driftless Area", also known in Iowa as the "Paleozoic Plateau", comprises some 39,000 square kilometers (15,000 square miles) in the states of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Today the highly dissected terrain provides a variety of habitats supporting a rich and diverse flora including many plants special to the area, i.e., principally, in Iowa, restricted to the Driftless Area. These special plants have received much attention, often having been discussed as possible relicts from past floras. However, distribution data for these ...

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, 1992-93, Paul E. Rider

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Starting in 1976, annual reports have served as a continuing record of the activities of the Iowa Academy of Science. These augment a 100 year history of the Academy which was written in the centennial year of 1975. This report covers the period from July 1, 1992 to June 30, 1993. It is based on the official records of the Academy (committee reports, Board minutes, correspondence) as well as the recollections, impressions and thoughts of the author.

Evaluation Of Passive Integrated Transponders As A Marking Technique For Turkey Poults, Dewaine H. Jackson, William H. Bunger Jan 1993

Evaluation Of Passive Integrated Transponders As A Marking Technique For Turkey Poults, Dewaine H. Jackson, William H. Bunger

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Injectable, passive integrated transponders (PITs) were evaluated as a marking technique for newly hatched wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo Linnaeus) poults. Seven of 12, 3-day-old domestic turkey poults received a PIT implant and a wing tag. A control group of five poults received only a wing tag. Two subcutaneous implant sites were evaluated, along the right side of the neck and in the area between the right inner thigh and breast. One of7 PITs failed or was expelled during the first week. Four scanning errors, in which the PIT was present yet not detected during the initial scanning attempt, occurred in ...

Mutant Weeds Of Iowa: V. S-Triazine Resistant Setaria Faberi Herrm, R. Thornhill, J. Dekker Jan 1993

Mutant Weeds Of Iowa: V. S-Triazine Resistant Setaria Faberi Herrm, R. Thornhill, J. Dekker

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

S-triazine resistance in giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm.) has been reported previously, but not in the midwestern U.S. corn belt or Iowa. A study was conducted using a chlorophyll fluorescence assay to confirm the presence of resistance in one S. faberi population in Iowa. Variable chlorophyll fluorescence assays confirmed that a population of this species with this type of resistance exists in Iowa. This is the first report of s-triazine resistance in S. faberi, and the fourth species with this type of herbicide resistance, found in an Iowa agroecosystem.

Competitive Abilities Of Oat And Barley Varieties, B. D. Mcbratney, K. J. Frey Jan 1993

Competitive Abilities Of Oat And Barley Varieties, B. D. Mcbratney, K. J. Frey

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Competitive ability of a plant genotype reflects its capacity to yield well and compete successfully for light, moisture, and nutrients when grown with similar or dissimilar genotypes. This trait is important to plant breeding because most breeding populations are propagated in mixed or competitive stands. The objective of this study was to assess the competitive abilities of oat and barley genotypes.

Two sets of oat and barley genotypes were evaluated for competitive ability. Set I consisted of five oat varieties, and Set II consisted of two barley and three oat varieties. Neither set, when averaged, showed over- or under-compensation with ...
