Expanding Horizons: The Reading Bookbag To Go, Char M. Lemons

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The Reading Bookbag To Go can be tailored to fit your classroom's needs. Create a theme, include puppets, posters, store bought taped stories and blank story writing books — whatever coordinates with your curriculum or sea son of the year. The Reading Bookbag that I have used consists of a compact and simple (goof proof) cassette recorder and a durable, waterproof tote bag. Laminated identification tags are attached to the tote bags and each cassette recorder is engraved with an identification number. A teacher can arrange for a different student to take the bookbag home nightly, or use the bookbag ...

Teacher As Researcher: A Two-Tiered Model, Barbara B. Nelson Dec 1992

Teacher As Researcher: A Two-Tiered Model, Barbara B. Nelson

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This thesis focuses on an investigation I undertook to enhance my effectiveness to teach mathematics, a subject to which I was assigned, but for which I had not been formally trained. It describes my attempt to construct knowledge through the clinical interview method as to how middle school students construct knowledge about integers and think about the knowledge they are constructing. On one level, I was attempting to learn how students come to understand the concept of integers; on a level, I was creating an understanding of how a teacher can construct knowledge about the construction of knowledge. This two-tiered ...

Metacognition In The Elementary Classroom: An Exploration, Terri Anne Caffelle Dec 1992

Metacognition In The Elementary Classroom: An Exploration, Terri Anne Caffelle

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Metacognition is a practice which enables students to monitor their thought processes in order to think critically. Research indicates that when students are aware of their thinking they become better thinkers. The purpose of this thesis is to encourage teachers to give more attention to metacognition in the classroom. A review of the literature on metacognition is given. Next, classroom lessons are outlined which introduce fourth grade students to metacognition in the context of math problem solving. Finally, an initial assessment is given of how students' metacognitive and problem solving abilities have changed as a results of the curriculum. Before ...

Restructuring For Mathematical Power: Techniques For Teaching Thinking In Algebra, Barbara D. Nelson Dec 1992

Restructuring For Mathematical Power: Techniques For Teaching Thinking In Algebra, Barbara D. Nelson

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Recent critiques of mathematics education have resulted in proposals to restructure learning and teaching for mathematical power. The new vision pictures the classroom as a community of learners where mathematics come alive as a useful tool in our technological society. However, many high school mathematics teachers are struggling to understand and implement the fundamental instructional change inherent in the vision. Written from the perspective of a high school teacher for experienced high school mathematics teachers, this thesis attempts to bridge vision and practice. To clarify the vision, current literature on reform in mathematics education is synthesized into a framework of ...

Preschool Teachers’ Stated Approaches To Imaginary Companion Behavior Among Preschool Students, Sharon Rose Stevens Dec 1992

Preschool Teachers’ Stated Approaches To Imaginary Companion Behavior Among Preschool Students, Sharon Rose Stevens

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the responses of preschool teachers toward students with imaginary companions, in particular, their reactions to situations involving imaginary companions in the classroom settings.

Past research has focused on reflections of individuals who have had imaginary companions in childhood. Professional attitudes toward these children have ranged from very positive to suggestive of mental illness, requiring treatment.

The subjects were 27 female preschool teachers currently teaching nursery school in the western New York region. Eight hypothetical imaginary companion scenarios were devised. Each scenario was comprised of three to five short sentences. Subjects responded to ...

Verbal Versus Active Play Learning: Their Effectiveness On Symbol Recall In Three And Four-Year-Old Children, Mark R. Dorman Dec 1992

Verbal Versus Active Play Learning: Their Effectiveness On Symbol Recall In Three And Four-Year-Old Children, Mark R. Dorman

Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Education Master’s Theses

This study investigated the contribution of the motor activity learning medium (MALM) to the development of symbol recall in three and four-year-old children. Eighteen pre-schoolers from Gananda Day Care, in Macedon, New York, were used in this study. They were assigned to either a verbal learning group or an active learning group using a stratified random sampling technique. The children were pre-tested for prior knowledge of the symbols; pi, sigma, theta, and omega of the Greek alphabet. These symbols were taught to children in the verbal learning and active learning groups for thirty minutes for two consecutive days with verbal ...

The Relationship Between Meaning In Life & The Occurrence Of Drug Abuse: An Epidemiological Retrospective Study, Thomas Nicholson Dec 1992

The Relationship Between Meaning In Life & The Occurrence Of Drug Abuse: An Epidemiological Retrospective Study, Thomas Nicholson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Humans have been using plant-derived drugs for as long as we have recorded history. Significant negative drug abuse related consequences occur in the areas of health, social issues, family relations, legal systems, and economic productivity. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between meaning in life and drug abuse. An epidemiological, retrospective study was performed to compare personal meaning in life between 49 individuals receiving in-patient treatment for drug abuse and a group of 49 matched, non-drug abusing controls. Study participants completed the Purpose-In-Life Test and Life Attitude Profile-Revised. On both instruments, the in-patient drug abusing subjects ...

Self-Concepts Of Career Level Ii And Iii Teachers And Career Ladder Eligible Teachers In The Public Schools Of Tennessee, Lois C. Myers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a significant difference in the self concept of Career Level II and III teachers and teachers who are eligible to apply but have not elected to participate in the Career Ladder Program in the public schools of Tennessee. The technique of causal-comparative research was used in this study. The Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS), developed by William Fitts, was selected as the appropriate instrument for use in this study. The TSCS is a versatile instrument that measures ten dimensions related to self concept: total level of self esteem, self ...

The purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which strategic planning was used in Tennessee school districts and its relationship with school system size, geographic regions, student achievement, fiscal capacity, per pupil property assessment, and percentage of revenue from local sources. The 139 school superintendents in Tennessee were surveyed to determine the degree of use of strategic planning in Tennessee. Surveys were mailed in early September, 1992. The Impact Of Site-Based Management On Perceived Roles Of Superintendents, Board Chairpersons, Principals And Selected Central Office Personnel In Tennessee School Systems, Narvia D. Haywood Dec 1992

The Impact Of Site-Based Management On Perceived Roles Of Superintendents, Board Chairpersons, Principals And Selected Central Office Personnel In Tennessee School Systems, Narvia D. Haywood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The introduction of site-based management has had an impact on the operation of school systems in Tennessee; however no one seems to know for certain what that impact was. Findings from this study revealed that there is a basic understanding of the impact of site-based management as perceived by superintendents, board chairpersons, principals, personnel, budget, curriculum, and staff development administrators. Findings also revealed that central office staff and principals, for the most part, perceive that the superintendents and board chairpersons were supportive of site-based management programs. One hundred and eighty-one educators, including board chairpersons, responded to a fifty-four item questionnaire ...
