Leadership Perspectives Of Tennessee School Leaders, Jessie S. Strickland May 1992

Leadership Perspectives Of Tennessee School Leaders, Jessie S. Strickland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem was to determine factors Tennessee school leaders consider important to effective leadership. Organizational frames by Bolman and Deal were used. The four organizational frames used in the study were structural, human resource, political, and symbolic approaches to leadership. The frames were examined with regard to their relationship to Tennessee superintendent's leadership and management styles with the perception of his/her style by their superordinates and subordinates. Leadership Orientations, a validated instrument designed by Bolman and Deal, was used to gain insight about school leader perceptions from superintendents and from individuals who work in school administration with the superintendents. Individual …

One School's Emergence Toward Participatory Decision Making, Terry W. Bloomquist

All Graduate Projects

A look at the development of participatory decision making, in one high school, was described in this study from a historical perspective. Kent-Meridian High School, in the Kent School District, was the studied school. Between the years 1979 and 1992 KentMeridian had three principals with very different and distinct styles. During this time span the emergence of a shared decision model, called "Empowerment", developed as a result of faculty expectation and pressure. Conclusions, implications, and recommendations are discussed.

Volunteer Assisted Reading, Linda Laurene Young Jan 1992

Volunteer Assisted Reading, Linda Laurene Young

All Graduate Projects

The problem investigated in this study relates to the need in schools today to find ways of providing educational support assistance for classroom teachers as part of the classroom learning process. With the continued rise in school enrollments, it is difficult for school funding to keep up with growing educational demands. Favorable student-teacher ratio issues emphasize the need to provide additional help for the classroom teacher. Finding additional classroom help has become a major concern; parents' commitments to employment and social obligations have changed their availability to participate at the schoolhouse and have lessened parent-child contact time (Cassidy, 1981). According …

Educating Baby: Preparing Children For Future School Success, Jill R. Bergman Jan 1992

Educating Baby: Preparing Children For Future School Success, Jill R. Bergman

Graduate Research Papers

Parents generally are their children's first teachers. Children learn more in their first five years than at any other five year time period in their life. Ninety percent of all requisite intellectual skills are learned by children before they enter school (Disibio, 1984). "Some researchers suggest that maternal socialization, and teaching patterns in particular, are strong predictors of later intellectual and cognitive performances" (Moreno, 1991, p. 395). Therefore, parents play extremely important parts in the education of their children.

A Comparison Of Cognitive Abilities Test Scores Of Second Graders From Four Different Preschool Backgrounds, Judy A. Conner

Graduate Research Papers

This study focused around a research question involving middle and upper socioeconomic status children: Do public school second graders who previously attended Montessori preschools demonstrate higher cognitive abilities (as measured by the Cognitive Abilities Test) than second graders who attended traditional preschools or did not attend preschool? Although there was a wide variability of scores within each group, t-tests analyses revealed significant differences favoring preschool attenders when compared to those who did not attend preschool, and for Montessori preschoolers when compared to the other groups.

Investigations In Metacognitive Learning Processes With Computers: Learner Based Inquiries, Diane Maschette, Evelyn Bransgrove, S Morris, Richard Johnson, Prue Anderson Dec 1991

Investigations In Metacognitive Learning Processes With Computers: Learner Based Inquiries, Diane Maschette, Evelyn Bransgrove, S Morris, Richard Johnson, Prue Anderson

Prue Anderson

Current research concerning learning highlights the importance of metacognitive skills in promoting successful learning for both adults and children (Baird, 1989; Flavell, 1981; Rowe, 1988). Several researchers have identified particular strategies for use in developing metacognitive skills in the classroom (Baird & Mitchell, 1986; Swan & White, 1990). Claims have been made for the computer as a useful tool in this process (for example, in developing problem solving skills) however there is relatively little research evidence to support such claims. This study addresses this shortfall, building on the considerable research in metacognition.
