Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Freshmen and Sophomore student-athletes and a control group of matched students (N = 234) at Iowa State University were administered the Noncognitive Questionnaire (NCQ). The NCQ has been shown to have validity in predicting first semester grade point averages; The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of noncognitive variables as predictors of first semester grade point averages of student-athletes;Results Showed that the three of the eight NCQ constructs (Community service, Support person and knowledge acquired in field) combined to predict first semester grade point averages of student-athletes (R =.38; p <.05). ACT scores had essentially no correlation with athletes grades (R =.05);It was concluded that ACT scores should not be used to prevent athletes from competing in their first year;Suggestions for programs that incorporated NCQ variables are made.
