A Study Of Student Attrition At A Small, Rural Community College: A Test Of The Bean And Metzner Model, Alan Michael Harris

The purpose of this study was to test the Bean and Metzner Model of Nontraditional Student Attrition (1985) in a small, rural community college environment. The influence of selected sets of background, environmental, and academic variables from the model were tested, in addition to, the individual variables contained within each set. The differences between the persister and nonpersister groups were examined by variables.;Data was collected via the Student Entry Questionnaire and the Student Questionnaire. Everyone who came in for placement testing at Paul D. Camp Community College during the fall of 1991 (n = 148) completed the Student Entry Questionnaire. …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the policy making process used in a higher education institution with an academic health center when dealing with social justice issues. How the policy group was constituted, the components of the policy, and policy implementation and oversight issues were included. An attempt was also made to explore factors which could facilitate or impede the policy making process.;The development of an AIDS policy at Virginia Commonwealth University served as the case study. The dearth of public health leadership and lack of leadership development in higher education for public health, reported by the Institute of Medicine Committee for the Study of the Future of Public Health, prompted this study of leadership perspectives in schools of public health and the practices and behaviors of contemporary public health leaders and their followers. Ambiguity between management and leadership was evident. Academic responders identified transactional leadership roles and relationships more often than those of transformational leadership. Leader and follower ratings of leader performance were most often 'moderate' indicating that leaders sometimes or fairly often exhibit exemplary leadership …

The purpose of this study was to examine theories of organizational culture typically applied to the university level of organization and their applicability to the academic department. Chaffee and Tierney's (1988) theory of organizational culture, dimensions of culture, and leadership strategies became the basis for a qualitative case study of a Department of Biological Sciences in a metropolitan university.;Interviews of current faculty members, current and former deans, and other administrators were conducted. Observations were made of faculty meetings and retreats and of departmental governance committee meetings. Extensive review of documents and correspondence covering more that twenty years provided additional data.;Interview …

There has been limited research published about the characteristics of alumni donors in higher education. The purpose of this study was to investigate a contemporary curricular phenomenon in freshman education: the freshman seminar. By means of a survey instrument mailed to all regionally accredited American colleges and universities enrolling over 100 students, this study investigated the nature and current numbers of freshman seminars with respect to the five most common forms of this course--the extended orientation seminar, the academic seminar with common content across sections, the academic seminar with content that varies by section, the professional seminar, and the basic study skills seminar.;Similarities and differences between seminar types were reported in terms of goals, content, …

The purpose of this study was to document the racial attitudes and racial identity development scores of White students in a liberal arts environment. of particular interest was gender differences, classification differences, and Greek/nonGreek affiliation differences. The purpose of this study was to conduct a content analysis of the attention to nine microcultural factors (race, ethnicity, language, gender, social class, religion, disability, age, and giftedness) in selected multicultural education college textbooks used in the U.S. to seek an answer to the following question: "Are there significant differences in attention to nine microcultural factors in selected editions of the same textbook?".;Methodology. Two textbooks were examined both qualitatively and quantitatively using topical and analytical categories to develop a display analysis outlining attention scores for microcultural factors in message units. Recent instances of campus crime, government intervention, increased media attention, and significant public concern has caused widespread institutional reaction to the issue of campus crime. The purpose of this study was to measure the effectiveness of two types of educational, proactive, crime prevention programs implemented in the residential setting. The two programs evaluated were crime prevention seminars conducted by campus safety and residential life personnel and the periodic distribution of crime prevention literature within the residential environment.
