Teacher Proximity As An Instructional Variable In The Use Of Interactive Video, Rosalie L. Kirsch Apr 1992

Teacher Proximity As An Instructional Variable In The Use Of Interactive Video, Rosalie L. Kirsch

Master's Theses

Teacher proximity during the use of the video disc Mastering Fractions produced by Systems Impact (1984) was investigated for effects on student on-task behavior. The study used a randomized multi-element design and was implemented in two classrooms at the junior high school level. In Phase 1, the 12 subjects were enrolled in a regular education mathematics classroom. The seven students in Phase 2 were enrolled in a special education classroom in the same school. During both phases, students were observed during teacher proximity and non-proximity conditions. Results of the study indicate no observable differences in student attending behavior when comparing ...

The Reading Connection: A Leadership Initiative Designed To Change The Delivery Of Educational Services To At-Risk Children, Gary Compton Apr 1992

The Reading Connection: A Leadership Initiative Designed To Change The Delivery Of Educational Services To At-Risk Children, Gary Compton

Dissertations

For many young children, the process of learning to read in school is cumbersome and extremely difficult. As a result, remedial or compensatory services are provided to these students. Once these at-risk students are targeted for remedial services, generally through the Chapter 1 program (Elementary and Secondary Education Act, 1965), they receive small group reading instruction from a specifically trained professional teacher. A problem occurs when these children, generally the poorest readers in their class, do not make significant gains when compared to their age-appropriate peers.

In the winter of 1988, a collaborative project between Western Michigan University and the ...

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to investigate the variety of technology education curricular models currently available and to develop a model with which to implement a technology education program able to enhance the primary discipline for advancing technological literacy within general education in Taiwan, Republic of China;A questionnaire consisting of four parts was developed by the researcher and sent to 584 subjects who were professors, teachers, administrators, and the 4th undergraduate and graduate students to gather the perceptions of respondents in terms of 98 variables dealing with concepts of technological literacy, technology education objectives, technology education curricular frameworks, and the ...

Developing A User-Cordial Online Retrieval Model Strategy To Access Extension Educational Materials From A North Central Region Database , Martha Maria Brown Jan 1992

Developing A User-Cordial Online Retrieval Model Strategy To Access Extension Educational Materials From A North Central Region Database , Martha Maria Brown

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

There is concern that the Cooperative Extension Service (CES) is not implementing electronic communication technologies rapidly enough to effectively compete with other information providers. Anxiety regarding electronic information-accessing strategies must be overcome with appropriate orientation and training so their use becomes routine. Extension personnel need an efficient, easy-to-use method of accessing online data-base in order to comply with the CES mission of assisting people in improving their lives. The purpose of this study was to extend the existing North Central Region Educational Materials Project (NCREMP) information search system by developing an online search strategy that is an easily-used tool for ...

Research And Development Of Microcontroller Experiment Instructional Units And Their Effectiveness With Industrial Technology, Electronic Technology, And Electrical Engineering Technology Majors , Steve Chih Hsiung Jan 1992

Research And Development Of Microcontroller Experiment Instructional Units And Their Effectiveness With Industrial Technology, Electronic Technology, And Electrical Engineering Technology Majors , Steve Chih Hsiung

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The Motorola MC68HC11 microcontroller is one of the semiconductor achievements that offers various facilities in microprocessor control applications with no need for excessive external support in hardwares. This new product provides the flexibility, efficiency, economy, and simplicity for the designing job of the microprocessor control applications. This study was conducted to improve the current microprocessor teaching materials which are mostly out-of-date and expensive in conducting lab experiments, and to determine the relative effectiveness of the new microprocessor teaching materials. A set of seven explanatory lab experiments were designed and developed on the Motorola MC68HC11 microcontroller EVB (Evaluation Board), and students ...

Distance Education: A Cost Analysis , Judy Irene Book Jones Jan 1992

Distance Education: A Cost Analysis , Judy Irene Book Jones

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Today, the technical capabilities exist for all schools to provide effective distance education opportunities. While the technologies do offer solutions to enable school districts to improve their curricula and learning experiences, they also create new problems. They are expensive and complicated. There are a growing number of efforts to make telecommunication infrastructure and information resources available; however, access to telecommunication resources varies considerably in different locations (U. S. Congress, 1989). There can be large differences in estimated costs and actual expenditures (Feasley, 1982). There are price and quality variances (Eicher, 1987). It is difficult to analyze and compare costs because ...

The Effects Of Different Systems Of Positive Reinforcement On Computer-Based Learning , Yang Mei-Hsueh Tsai Jan 1992

The Effects Of Different Systems Of Positive Reinforcement On Computer-Based Learning , Yang Mei-Hsueh Tsai

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of three selected hierarchies of positive reinforcement stimuli (i.e., text, text with sound, and text with moving picture as well as sound effects) coupled with different presentation schedules (i.e., continuous, fixed-ratio, and variable-ratio) on computer-based learning of the arithmetic concepts of addition. To fulfill the purpose, nine computer programs which had identical instructional content were developed on Apple II computers using SuperPILOT software. Although the programs had identical instructional content, each program had a different reinforcement system. These nine reinforcement systems were the combinations of two factors, reinforcement ...

Perceptions Of Czech And Slovak Participants Of The Usefulness Of The Iowa State University "Farm Management In A Market Economy Workshop" , Gary Allan White

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to assess the perception of the participants who attended Farm Management in a Market Economy (Workshop I), which was presented at the three agriculture universities in the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic. The workshop was designed to assist them in their efforts in moving from a centrally controlled economy (society) to a market economy (society). Objectives of the study were to determine: (1) to what extent the participants were able to understand the information presented in the workshop; (2) the usefulness of the workshop to the participants in their efforts to understand a market ...

Training Electronic Equipment Operators: Behavior Modeling Versus Text Versus Trial And Error , Carolyn Kay Howard Jan 1992

Training Electronic Equipment Operators: Behavior Modeling Versus Text Versus Trial And Error , Carolyn Kay Howard

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This experiment evaluated two instructional methods for training photocopier operators--behavior modeling and text (instruction manual). A trial and error group served as a control. The behavior modeling conditions utilized two mediums for the demonstration component--in-person and videotape. All participants were trained on four basic photocopying tasks. Performance was tested one week after the initial training session using the four training tasks plus a transfer task, the later combining two of the training tasks. The in-person demonstration behavior modeling condition yielded significantly less time for completion of the five tasks when compared with text and trial and error. Surprisingly, participants in ...
