An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Power Style, And Locus-Of-Control For Selected Academic Deans, Carla E. Warner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The concept of locus of control, as an aspect of the human personality, has remained of interest to researchers since its identification by Julian Rotter in the 1960s. Beginning with the work of French and Raven in the 1950s, the concept of power and its interrelationship with leadership ability has also continued to be of interest to social scientists and educators. This study was completed in response to the lack of previous research on the relationship of locus of control to power style usage and preference. Four hundred and eighty academic deans from one hundred and nine Comprehensive II institutions ...

A Sample Selective Linear Predictive Analysis Of Speech Signals, Suresh Kumar Venkata Vishnubhatla

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Linear Prediction Analysis is one of the popular methods of processing speech. But it has problems in estimating the vocal tract characteristics of voiced sounds uttered by females and children. This is because the conventional linear prediction method assumes that all the sample values in each analysis frame are to be approximated by a linear combination of a definite number of the previous samples whether the previous samples include excitation periods or not. Also, the Linear Prediction analysis is easily affected by source excitation; The vocal tract characteristics of signals of short pitch period can be estimated more accurately ...

Those who have lower expectations and lower perceptions of performance, and those ...

A New Optimization Approach To The Design Of One-Dimensional And Two-Dimensional Finite Impulse Response Digital Filters, Eddie G Awad Jan 1992

A New Optimization Approach To The Design Of One-Dimensional And Two-Dimensional Finite Impulse Response Digital Filters, Eddie G Awad

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The theory for designing finite impulse response (FIR) frequency sampling digital filters can be extended to two-dimensions. The linear phase frequency response can be represented as a linear combination of individual frequency responses corresponding to the filter's bands. The design of two-dimensional frequency sampling filters (FSF) has been treated in the past by using the technique of linear programming to find the optimal values of the transition samples. Although in theory the method guarantees an optimal solution, convergence problems occurred; This paper will introduce some detail of a one-dimensional FSF design technique and then extend these concepts to the ...

Validation Of Current Body Composition Estimation Equations For Men Over 60 Years Of Age, Elizabeth Lorain Kelley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study compared five skinfold equations for body composition (Jackson & Pollock's Sum of 7 {dollar}\{{dollar}JP7{dollar}\}{dollar} and Sum of 3 {dollar}\{{dollar}JP3{dollar}\}{dollar}; Jackson & Pollock's Sum of 4 {dollar}\{{dollar}Y4{dollar}\}{dollar} and Sum of 3 {dollar}\{{dollar}Y3{dollar}\}{dollar} for the YMCA, and Durnin and Womersley's Sum of 7 {dollar}\{{dollar}DW{dollar}\}){dollar} with percent fat obtained from underwater weighing. Subjects were ninety-seven adult males aged 60-80 years. Skinfold measurements were taken with Lange calipers and underwater weight (UWW) was determined in a seated position utilizing a load cell system with residual volume (RV) measured at the time of weighing; The skinfold equations achieved a mean correlation of.74 with underwater weighing. JP7 yielded the highest correlation (.78) and DW the lowest (.72). A 1RM-ANOVA indicated that all five equations produced significantly different results than UWW. The data showed that these equations are not as valid with the present study's population as with those from which the equations were derived.

Ambrose Bierce: Between Politics And Philosophy, Jeffrey Raymond Macmillan Jan 1992

Ambrose Bierce: Between Politics And Philosophy, Jeffrey Raymond Macmillan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the political thought of Ambrose Bierce. Because of his aversion to Gilded Age politics, Bierce did not participate in the political process. As a result, his political thought must be considered from an ideological or philosophical perspective; Examination of his views suggests Bierce was a philosophical conservative much like the "father" of British conservative thought, Edmund Burke. Though many political historians argue American political culture has never contained elements of British conservatism, others claim there has always existed a small strain of Burkean conservatism throughout American political history. This study supports the latter view by holding the ...

The Subjective Nature Of Decision-Makers In The Domain Of Objective Sentence Processing, William Bud Brown Jan 1992

The Subjective Nature Of Decision-Makers In The Domain Of Objective Sentence Processing, William Bud Brown

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Selective incapacitation has been defined as an objective process whereby violent and/or chronic offenders are isolated and given longer prison terms. The purpose of this process is to keep these offenders out of society for longer periods of time resulting in a safer society. Couched within this utilitarian perspective is the assumption that the social sciences have developed a reputable formula from which future criminal behavior can be accurately predicted. This research, a case study of a Nevada presentence investigation unit, found that all convicted offenders are dealt with using the same criteria applied to violent and/or chronic ...

The Structure, Conduct, And Performance Of Nevada's Slot Route Industry, Benedict Dell'orto Jan 1992

The Structure, Conduct, And Performance Of Nevada's Slot Route Industry, Benedict Dell'orto

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The four largest firms in the Nevada slot route industry control over 70 percent of the industry. Its structure was shown to be highly concentrated using the Herfindahl-Herschman index; The individual slot route operators appear to conduct themselves in a non-competitive manner by differentiating their respective products. Each firm in the industry established their own niche either through product or service differentiation; Firms in concentrated industries tend to earn monopoly profits. Yet, using Tobin's q and Jensen's coefficient, we show that Nevada's slot route firms did not earn excess profits, despite the high degree of industrial concentration ...
