Afrikan students at Iowa State University are experiencing difficulty in a variety of areas. The intent of this study is to assess and compare the attitudes of five groups directly and indirectly related to Iowa State University, in regard to their attitudes toward athletics. The five groups are: Alumni, Faculty, Parents of Student-Athletes, Students and Student-Athletes. Each group consisted of 300 individuals. Freshmen and Sophomore student-athletes and a control group of matched students (N = 234) at Iowa State University were administered the Noncognitive Questionnaire (NCQ). The NCQ has been shown to have validity in predicting first semester grade point averages;The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of noncognitive variables as predictors of first semester grade point averages of student-athletes;Results Showed that the three of the eight NCQ constructs (Community service, Support person and knowledge acquired in field) combined to predict first semester grade point averages of student-athletes (R =.38; p <.05). ACT scores had essentially no correlation with athletes grades (R =.05);It was concluded that ACT scores should not be used to prevent athletes from competing in their first year;Suggestions for programs that incorporated NCQ variables are made.

The purpose of this study was to examine the retention and graduation rates for 125 black students who had enrolled as freshmen at Iowa State University in 1984. The study examined student history data from the university's data base and information on the college experience at Iowa State, based on telephone interviews with 95 former students.
