School Ka Sabaq: Literacy In A Girls Primary School In Rural Pakistan, Iffat Farah

This paper (which is part of a larger ethnographic study) describes literacy learning practices in the context of a girls' school in rural Pakistan. In this context, school ka sabaq is recognized as involving reading and writing activities, and behavior particular to the institution of the school. A description of the reading and writing activities as well as the division of time and space in the school shows that literacy activities are reflected in and determined by the context of the particular institution within which they are learned and practiced. The goal of this study was to explore the role that formal science content education plays in the process of educating future elementary teachers of science. The formal science content preparation of elementary education majors was investigated to explore the relationships between secondary school and college science content preparation and science achievement, attitude toward teaching science, science teaching efficacy, selected science misconceptions, and other demographic variables. This dissertation analyzes and reports the findings of student reactions to a set of 51 computer modules called Performance Element Modules (PEMs). These modules focused on selected knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed by teacher education students at a midwestern university. The major purpose of the study was to assess whether students will accept the 51 computer-assisted modules as viable instructional tools;The questionnaires were designed to collect forced-choice and open-ended data as well as demographic data.
