Selected Aspects Of The Secretary's Role In The Public Schools As Perceived By Principals, Teachers, And School Secretaries, Patty H. Richards

The purpose of this study was to compare principals', teachers' and secretaries' perceptions regarding selected aspects of the school secretary's role in administering the public schools. A questionnaire, developed by the researcher, was sent to 465 principals, teachers, and school secretaries in the First Tennessee Development District, in Spring, 1991. Three hundred ninety-one questionnaires were returned for a response rate of 84%. Six null hypotheses were tested for significance at the.05 level. Readiness And Achievement Motivation: An Investigation Of The Validity Of The Readiness Scales In Hersey And Blanchard's Situational Leadership, Xiaoping Wang

The purpose of the study was to investigate the construct validity of the two instruments measuring readiness in Situational Leadership: the Readiness Scales--Manager Rating Form and Staff Member Rating Form--developed by Hambleton, Blanchard, and Hersey (1977). The study examined the relationships between readiness and achievement motivation, and between readiness and faculty education and work experience. The study also explored the concurrent validity of the two instruments measuring McClelland's (1961) achievement motivation: The Achievement Orientation Scale and The NachNaff Scale. An Examination Of The Leadership Of Administrators In Higher Education As Represented In The American Academic Novel From 1950 To 1990, Laura T. Barnett

The purpose of this study was to examine the academic leadership as portrayed in the American academic novel from 1950 to 1990. Leadership positions from higher education (president, vice-president, dean, and chairperson) were examined in this analysis of 40 academic fiction novels. The leader behavior of the selected characters was classified, using the following categories: autocratic (telling), democratic (selling), participative (participating), delegative (delegating), situational (varying) and "other" (unclassifiable due to lack of information or criteria variance). An Investigation Of First Grade Students/Perceptions Of And Attitudes Toward Reading, Judy Dibattisto-Azzolino

This study was conducted in order to investigate and compare first grade students/perceptions of and attitudes toward reading.

The subjects consisted of 110 first grade students. These participants were asked to complete a ten-question attitude survey and also answer ten interview questions concerning reading. These oral responses were tape recorded and transcribed.

The surveys and interviews were then examined and condensed. Responses to questions were descriptively analyzed and divided into categories. Percentages of similar responses were reported. These percentages varied among the questions.

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between the attitudes of remedial and developmental directors and instructors and student ratings. A population of 230 full-time directors and instructors and 3,269 remedial students were surveyed in the Fall of 1990. The return rate was 95% for the directors and instructors with the student rate dependent upon instructors administering the instruments. Two instruments were developed--one to measure the attitudes of directors and instructors and one for student ratings of instructors. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceptions of academic deans and department chairpersons regarding the leadership behavior of deans; and, to determine the relationship between perceived leadership behavior of deans and job satisfaction of department chairpersons in the public institutions of higher education. The study involved a random sample of 50 academic deans and 285 department chairpersons at public universities in Tennessee. Testing of five null hypotheses was based upon responses of 42 academic deans (84%) and 173 department chairpersons (60%). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) program on the reading attitudes and habits of second grade students.

The subjects were two second grade classes from a suburban school in western New York. The control group of 25 students participated in a reading program using the basal and children's literature. The treatment group of 26 students participated in a reading program using the basal and children's literature plus. a daily fifteen minute period of SSR. This study was undertaken to determine selected principals' perceptions of the importance of the NPBEA's initially recommended seven foundational areas of learning and associated topics to be included in doctoral programs for preservice preparation of principals. A secondary purpose of the study was to determine the amount of coverage of the foundational areas and associated topics in the preparation programs of the selected principals. The purpose of this study was to determine if first graders, invented spelling and Marie Clay’s Concepts of Print test, used together and separately, are significant predictors of future reading achievement. The study also compared the prediction ability of an invented spelling stage to the prediction ability of the Concepts of Print test.

School-related stress is the most prevalent untreated cause of academic failure in our schools. Baker (1987) states that this type of stress may afflict six to ten million children per year. This dissertation analyzes and reports the findings of student reactions to a set of 51 computer modules called Performance Element Modules (PEMs). These modules focused on selected knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed by teacher education students at a midwestern university. This descriptive study utilizes methods and materials not found in traditional high school computer applications classes. Four classes were involved in this preliminary descriptive study. Seventy students in periods four, six, and seven were tested to determine their learning style preference. The emphasis for style was based on one of three perceptual responses: auditory, visual, and emotive. Third period received the teacher's traditional instruction for computer applications.
