Teaching, research, and service constitute the three commonly articulated missions of American colleges and universities. The purpose of this study was (1) to examine whether public service is a viable element of the college mission or a marginal activity and (2) to analyze the forces that shape the public service responsibility of a given institution. The purpose of this study was to examine the construct and predictive validity of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI). The LASSI is an instrument designed to assess utilization of learning and study strategies and methods for the purpose of measuring strategy use, diagnosing deficiencies, and prescribing intervention. The literature suggests that valid instruments of this type are sadly lacking. The LASSI User's Manual, however, presents no statistical evidence of instrument validity. The purpose of this research was to investigate the potential utilization of adventure education programs to provide an effective and innovative alternative for enhancing the college undergraduate experience. Initial research consisted of performing an indepth study of higher education's curriculum reform literature and studies and literature on adventure education programs. Specific components of the curriculum reform literature regarding character development were then correlated with attributes discovered in the adventure education literature. The interrelationship that developed provided a theoretical rationale from which to propose that adventure education programs could indeed address many of the objectives of the recommended curriculum.;The next step …

This historical case study of Bank Street College of Education examines the organizational arrangement of an independent professional school as an alternative to standard college/university-based schools of education. Bank Street College of Education claims to be a school with a clear, purposeful mission that is organized in a free-standing arrangement. The implementation of Public Law 94-142 (amended in 1990 by Public Law 101-476) guaranteed individuals with disabilities a quality public education. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 opened the doors of postsecondary educational institutions to individuals with disabilities wishing to continue their educations past high school. This influx of diverse individuals to colleges/universities has created a need for support service programs to assist, guide, and ensure the success of this population. The purposes of this qualitative study were to investigate the transformation of Madison College, a small Virginia women's state teachers college, into James Madison University, a nationally recognized coeducational, comprehensive university, and to examine the effect of President Ronald E. Carrier's charismatic leadership on the transformation. This metamorphosis took place in just twelve years.;The Strategic Planning Model developed by Kotler and Fox in Strategic Marketing for Educational Institutions (1985) was used as a framework to evaluate the strategic plans used by Madison's administrators to change the institution's image. The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of freshmen, as measured by cumulative GPA, who received developmental preparation at the college level with those who were prepared by the secondary school systems. The author's intention was to obtain data for accountability of institutional performance and provide public officials with a program effectiveness base.;Data were obtained from the institutional research office of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia on all entering freshmen students for the years 1988 and 1989. Articulation was the topic of some educational leaders within Virginia over twenty years ago. More recently, however, the Commonwealth developed statewide articulation.;The procedure used in this research to present the findings of this study involved an examination of various documents. Some of these documents were produced by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, the State Board of Education, Minutes of State Council meetings, as well as Minutes of Board of Education meetings.
