The Effect Of Calculator Use On Standardized Test Scores Of Eighth Grade Mathematics Students, Jennifer M. Corkrean
Graduate Research Papers
The effects of calculator usage on the scores of students taking the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills math battery were investigated. Two hundred seventy 8th grade students from Ames Middle School were included in the study. All students took the three mathematics subtests, Mathematical Concepts, Mathematical Problem Solving and Mathematical Computations, included in Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. Half of the randomly selected class groups were supplied with, and allowed to use, calculators on all three sections of the mathematics tests, the other half of the students were not allowed to use calculators. The results indicated that both groups of …

The study was conducted in a Chapter 1 classroom with two groups of second-grade students. A total of 8 subjects were involved in the study. During the 10-week study, each group was exposed to the experimental treatment for a 5-week period and the control treatment for 5 weeks. A cooperative group structure was implemented during the experimental treatment, with students working in dyads to complete assigned tasks. In the control treatment, students worked in a homogeneous ability group structure and follow-up work was completed …
Self-Evaluation Of A Whole-Language Classroom, Mary Salazar Guenther
Self-Evaluation Of A Whole-Language Classroom, Mary Salazar Guenther
Graduate Research Papers
Over the last two decades significant new information concerning the acquisition of functional literacy has been generated through theoretical and applied research. Traditional notions of literacy as the application by an individual of a set of independent skills to read or write have undergone a tremendous transformation (Langer, 1987). After taking into consideration new and important insights from recent research in the field of literacy, Wells (1990) defines literacy as the "disposition to engage appropriately with texts of different types in order to empower actions, feelings and thinking in the context of purposeful social activity'' (p. 14).

Those Barracks Babies, Marcia Baer
Those Barracks Babies, Marcia Baer
MSU Authors Collection
This is a book about how a group of folks, in a time long ago, living in a small Minnesota college town, celebrated life. It is a story of reflection. Reflection into the past when times and people were - shall we say - different. The people were veterans returning from the war, the time was the middle of the century-1947 through 1964. The place was Mankato State College in Southern Minnesota. This is the story of "The Barracks Babies." After you read these letters, look at the fading photographs, you'll know this is not the '90s. What makes these …

Creating Instructional Strategies Which Match Individual Learning Styles, Stephanie Veronica Frisco
Creating Instructional Strategies Which Match Individual Learning Styles, Stephanie Veronica Frisco
Graduate Research Papers
Recent studies have begun to focus on matching instructional 3 strategies and learning styles. For example, the studies conducted by Biggs, Papalia, and Smith and Renzulli ( cited in Curry, 1990) article has as their primary objective the study and application of learning styles to improve the immediate and long-term results of general teaching-learning processes. According to Guild (cited in Brandt, 1990) , the focal point of the learning style movement is that individuals are different, so one instructional strategy will not suit everyone. Teachers who have begun to explore the notion of learning styles agree that the concept gives …

Christ-Centered Discipleship: A Biblical Concept Of Religious Education, Myung Soo Cho
Dissertations
Concomitant with increased concern for church growth in the 1950s was a new awareness of the importance of discipleship. From the days of Jesus to the present, the concept of discipleship has changed greatly. The problem of this investigation was to identify a Biblical concept of discipleship.
It was hypothesized that the relationship of Jesus with His Heavenly Father was the model for Jesus' discipleship with the Twelve apostles and other disciples. The primary objective was to identify principles form this Christ-centered discipleship that could provide a theoretical framework for Christian religious education.
