Self-Evaluation Of A Whole-Language Classroom, Mary Salazar Guenther Jan 1990

Self-Evaluation Of A Whole-Language Classroom, Mary Salazar Guenther

Graduate Research Papers

Over the last two decades significant new information concerning the acquisition of functional literacy has been generated through theoretical and applied research. Traditional notions of literacy as the application by an individual of a set of independent skills to read or write have undergone a tremendous transformation (Langer, 1987). After taking into consideration new and important insights from recent research in the field of literacy, Wells (1990) defines literacy as the "disposition to engage appropriately with texts of different types in order to empower actions, feelings and thinking in the context of purposeful social activity'' (p. 14).

Reflection into the past when times and people were - shall we say - different. The people were veterans returning from the war, the time was the middle of the century-1947 through 1964. The place was Mankato State College in Southern Minnesota. This is the story of "The Barracks Babies." After you read these letters, look at the fading photographs, you'll know this is not the '90s. What makes these …

For example, the studies conducted by Biggs, Papalia, and Smith and Renzulli ( cited in Curry, 1990) article has as their primary objective the study and application of learning styles to improve the immediate and long-term results of general teaching-learning processes. According to Guild (cited in Brandt, 1990) , the focal point of the learning style movement is that individuals are different, so one instructional strategy will not suit everyone. Teachers who have begun to explore the notion of learning styles agree that the concept gives …
