Dynamics Of Minority Education: An Index To The Status Of Race And Ethnic Relations In The United States, James E. Blackwell

Trotter Review

Throughout this century scholars and legal experts have devoted special attention to the issue of race and ethnicity as a determinant of life chances in the United States. Some of the more influential treatises in the social and behavioral sciences, many of which have become classics, addressed fundamental, derivative (and often more compelling) extensions of race and ethnicity. They focused on such topics as race-based group dominance, ethnic stratification, structural inequality based upon racial or ethnic identification, beliefs in inherent racial superiority and status privilege, class exploitation, the nature of prejudice, and the maintenance of power over groups defined as ...

Relationships Among Comprehension Strategies Reported By Proficient And Nonproficient Esl Students, Ruth A. Vogelaar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Readers seem to employ a number of different strategies in comprehending a text. What strategies do successful readers use? Are the strategies related in any way? Grant Cioffi (1986), who attempted to answer these questions for native English speaker readers, found that proficient readers seem to use clusters of comprehension strategies when reading unfamiliar texts. The use of one strategy seems to be complementary with the use or less frequent use of one or more strategies. However, he did not compare these strategies with those of the nonproficient reader.

This study is modeled after Cioffi's study. The purpose of ...

Reading instruction in China and that in the United States are so different that they are not compatible. In fact, they seem to go in opposite directions. An Experiment Testing The Bolinger Principle To Teach Gerunds And Infinitives, Juliet Rosemarie Vawser

Dissertations and Theses

A group of 101 ESL learners ranging in the mid to upper intermediate level was randomly distributed among two groups--experimental and control. They were given three tests prior to the experiment and three tests after treatment. Both groups were given the same contextualized materials. However, the experimental group was taught gerunds and infinitives using the Bolinger principle whereas the control group was taught gerunds and infinitives by list memorization.

Two hypotheses were posed:

1. Teaching ESL learners gerunds and infinitives using the Bolinger principle will result in significant improvement in discrete point tests.

2. Teaching ESL learners gerunds and infinitives ...
