Daniel Boorstin claimed in 1962 that for twentieth-century Americans, "fact or fantasy, the image becomes the thing." The 1980s abound with governors promising education reform in their states, activities underscored by the August 1986 National Governors' Association education report, Time for Results. Thus, the image of the "Education Governor" has become the fashionable "thing." But does fact or fantasy lie beneath the surface of this image? The purpose of this study was to determine the perceived competencies involved in administering special education programs and the attitude toward educational preparation and training of a select group of elementary school administrators. Principals from fourteen public school divisions throughout the State of Virginia, during the 1985-86 school year, participated in the study.;An original survey developed for purposes of the study was mailed to 173 elementary school administrators chosen in a random sampling from seven geographical divisions throughout the state. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of teamwork factors to perceived success of interagency collaboration.;Administrators (n = 375) of eight governmental service agencies, state and local, serving handicapped children, ages birth through twenty-one (21), in Virginia responded to the researcher's mailed survey. The survey instrument was validated with 20 graduate students and 4 national experts in interagency collaboration. A telephone follow-up on certain items in the survey with 26 randomly selected respondees resulted in a significant reliability coefficient (Spearman Correlation Coefficient of .9307). The purpose of this study was to investigate differences, if any, in the psychological characteristics of separated and/or divorced non-custodial fathers involved in child custody litigation. Three groups of fathers were investigated and delineated by length of time involved in litigation. Psychological characteristics examined included self-concept, affective states, depression, locus of control, and parental attitudes of confidence, causation, acceptance, understanding, and trust.;The sample of the population used in this study was 49 volunteers obtained from such sources as counselors, attorneys, and support and advocacy groups.;The specific variables proposed were investigated using discriminant function analysis with the direct method. The purpose of the research was to model student choice behavior in order to gain a better understanding of the choices students made (a public four-year college, a private four-year college, or a public community college) and the variables which influenced those choices. The probability of selecting any one educational option was assumed to be a function of variables which reflected costs, income, and tastes and preferences. This investigation focused on censorship by librarians in senior high schools in Virginia during the 1985-86 school year. Emphasis was placed on determining the subject matter that the librarians censored, the means by which censorship was exercised, and the factors that were influential in causing these individuals to engage in such activity.;The primary method of securing data for the study was a questionnaire developed by the researcher and mailed to the head librarian in every senior high school in the state of Virginia. The purpose of this study was to analyze the Virginia system of school finance from 1979 through 1986 to determine the degree of comprehensive resource equity and funding adequacy for pupils and public school divisions. The study extends prior research by assessing the effectiveness of the current finance system on the basis of three principles of equity and two measures of funding adequacy. Five different years of financial data were analyzed and 13 different variables of educational resource inputs, outputs, wealth, and effort were gathered and measured. The purpose of this study was to identify what factors prompt adult women to return to community college. Adult developmental theory provided a framework for the study. Aslanian and Brickell's (1980) theory that life transitions prompt a learning response was integrated with Gilligan's (1982) theory that women identify themselves in the context of relationships. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to examine the behavior of a specific group of educational leaders, to determine the presence of masculine, feminine, and androgynous qualities, and to relate these specific qualities to their performance ratings. The researcher examined current literature relating to the concept of androgyny in several areas.;Method. The Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) was administered to a sample of 59 school administrators from one school system. The scoring of the BSRI resulted in four separate categories: feminine, masculine, androgynous, and undifferentiated. This is a descriptive study of the relationship between gender of therapist and the effectiveness of behavioral treatment with agoraphobics. Participants for this study included fifty-six clients (28 males and 28 females) divided into matching pairs (male and female), 20 pairs were assigned to female therapists and 8 pairs were assigned to male therapists. Client progress was measured pre and post treatment with the Fear Questionnaire and Beck Depression Inventory.;Results indicate that male and female clients progress equally well in behavioral treatment for agoraphobia. However, gender of therapist significantly impacts on progress; male and female pairs progressed significantly more with …

The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of parental intervention on the self-esteem, degree of coping, and stress levels of parents of developmentally delayed or handicapped infants involved in an infant intervention program.;The research design for this study was a posttest-only control group design. The samples consisted of 48 parents who had infants enrolled in an infant intervention program. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship of aptitude and vocational interest to academic achievement of soldiers in entry-level job training programs at the US Army Quartermaster School. The study was designed to distinguish between soldiers who passed all course examinations and those who did not. The soldiers were expected to differ on selected measures of aptitude and vocational interest.;The courses were selected for study because approximately 50% of the soldiers enrolled failed one or more examinations on the first attempt and thus required some form of retraining.
