A Research Study Of The Effect Of Instruction In The Basal Reader Supplemented By The Language Experience Approach On Comprehension Scores Of First Grade Readers, Nancy L. Keene Jan 1985

A Research Study Of The Effect Of Instruction In The Basal Reader Supplemented By The Language Experience Approach On Comprehension Scores Of First Grade Readers, Nancy L. Keene

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether children enrolled in two first grade classes who did not meet the criterion score for one or more of the seven subtests on a selected readiness test given during the first two weeks of the school year would make higher scores on selected comprehension measures when instruction in a basal reading series is supplemented with instruction in the language experience approach than children who receive instruction only in basal reader materials. Language experience activities were conducted with all reading groups in the experimental class for three days every two weeks. Group …

Meeting The Needs Of The Marginally Learning Disabled Intermediate Grade Child, Gail Geiger Lobach Jan 1985

Meeting The Needs Of The Marginally Learning Disabled Intermediate Grade Child, Gail Geiger Lobach

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study focused on the needs of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students who have I.Q. scores of roughly 75-95. These students often function two or more years below grade level in school and are referred to as Marginally Learning Disabled (MLD), or slow learners. Factors which contribute to the existence of this situation were discussed as were problems of accurate identification. It was found that most school districts do not provide special help for these students. MLD students are usually placed in the regular classroom. A few school districts have experimented with special resource classes or self-contained classes. Parental …

A Comparison Of The Behaviors In The Beginning Teacher Program With The Behaviors Of Effective Teachers, Christine C. Faircloth Jan 1985

A Comparison Of The Behaviors In The Beginning Teacher Program With The Behaviors Of Effective Teachers, Christine C. Faircloth

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The behaviors of effective teachers compared to the behaviors indicated on the observation instrument of the Beginning Teacher Program were investigated. Effective teaching behaviors were drawn from professional literature. The results indicate that effective teaching includes competence, performance, and continuing teacher education. The teacher's role as a professional rather than a technician was supported in the literature. The results indicate that effective teachers universally practice the effective behaviors listed in the Beginning Teacher Program which are based on scientific knowledge. The recommendation is that more research should be done in teacher effectiveness and evaluation.

Interpersonal Interactions In Student-Teacher Relationships: Types And Effect On Student Achievememt, Cheryl S. Spivey

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify the types of interpersonal interactions, in student-teacher relationships, that have an effect on student achievement. These essential conditions of communication have been labeled: warmth, empathy, respect, genuineness, concreteness, self-disclosure, immediacy, and confrontation. Communication of these conditions, by teachers to students, shows a significant effect on student achievement when observed by classroom researchers. This investigation has also addressed the efficiency of training procedures used with groups of teachers who participated in the research studies, the results of which support the increasing awareness of human-relations development.

The Educational Effects Of And The Relationship Between Nonpromotion And The Dropout Rate, Sharon Slaughter Summers Jan 1985

The Educational Effects Of And The Relationship Between Nonpromotion And The Dropout Rate, Sharon Slaughter Summers

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The decision not to promote a student is a critical one; it could affect the rest of the student's academic career. It is imperative that such a decision be based on the best available research. This study reviews research that has been done on nonpromotion, dropouts, and the relationship between the two. Results from an examination of 1,024 dropouts' records show that 87.8% of dropouts had experienced nonpromotion one or more times. Recommendations for developing retention criteria and preventing dropouts are listed.

A Survey Of The Use Of Nonverbal Communication By Primary Teachers In Class Management, Virginia O. Griffin

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to find out if practicing primary teachers use nonverbal communication (NVC) effectively in class management. Eighty University of North Florida graduate students who had taught Kindergarten, first, second or third grade were surveyed during the Summer 1985 Term with a self-reporting questionnaire developed as part of this project. It was found that the majority of these teachers reported that they usually use NYC in their classrooms. It was concluded that they could benefit from strategies and activities to use NYC more effectively and extensively. Since four competencies that beginning teachers need to demonstrate in …

A Comparison Of Sat Scores Of The Lep Elementary School Students In Duval County, Kathryn Llewellyn Branch

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The hypothesis that there is no significant difference between the mean SAT Total Reading Battery percentile scores of LEP students who are mainstreamed and those who are self-contained, was studied. Sixty-eight fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade LEP students were administered the SAT. They were divided into two groups. The self-contained group consisted of 35 students; the mainstreamed group consisted of 33 students. The mean percentile score for the mainstreamed group was 39.57 with a standard deviation of 21.02. For the self-contained group, the mean was 26.0 and the standard deviation was 18.53. The computed t = 2.67, P < .05. The null hypothesis was rejected.

Adventure Playgrounds Vs Traditional Playgrounds, Susan C. Matthews Jan 1985

Adventure Playgrounds Vs Traditional Playgrounds, Susan C. Matthews

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A comparison between the traditional American playground with the adventure playground clearly shows the superiority of the latter in meeting the play needs of children. This study explores the history and characteristics of both types of playgrounds. Research also focuses on children's play needs and how playground design affects these needs. Adventure playgrounds as public school playgrounds offer a wider range of play experiences than can the traditional school playground and can enhance academic learning. Inservice training for educators can facilitate an understanding of the concept of the adventure playground and the teacher's role as play leader. Enlisting community support …
