The Development Of A Student-Parent Handbook For Lake Crest Elementary School, Oakland, Illinois, Ezra W. Smithson

Masters Theses

In 1947, a large number of very small school districts surrounded Oakland, Illinois each with its own school board. In 1948, Oakland and all or parts of these 16 districts were consolidated by the vote of the people into a single school district as permitted by State Law (1948) thus forming Oakland Community School District No. 5.

Three attendance centers, the Oakland Elementary School; the Hindsboro Elementary School; and Oakland High School were operated from 1959 until 1968.

Roles And Duties Of Activity/Athletic Directors In The 115 Largest High Schools In Iowa, James Irvin Boyd

Graduate Research Papers

The student activity program in today's high school is complex. Some high schools have activities ranging from boys' and girls' interscholastic athletical events, to school clubs, to dramatics and musicals, and bake sales. Other high schools have a well-tuned student activity program reflecting their school district's philosophy of the educational value of the program to the student. Other school district's activity programs are financially in trouble and lack community, faculty, and student support; the school programs reflect this lack of support.

A Study Of The Development Of Secondary Alternative Schools, Luann Boss Jan 1983

A Study Of The Development Of Secondary Alternative Schools, Luann Boss

Graduate Research Papers

If there is one idea that educators today might agree on, it's the idea that no one program will ever begin to fit the needs of all students. Students learn under different circumstances, in different atmospheres, and in different ways. Yet American education for many years has tried to teach every child in the same way and at the same time. Our present model of education has prevailed for many years. The format of a single school serving a local community dates back to earlier centuries in American history. It was sufficient for local community members in the early 1900's …

A Proposed Course Of Instruction In Resources For Communications For Saint Ambrose College, Stephen Thomas Fehring Jan 1983

A Proposed Course Of Instruction In Resources For Communications For Saint Ambrose College, Stephen Thomas Fehring

Graduate Research Papers

To effectively convey a message can present a difficult task. Communicating means more than merely getting a message from a sender to a receiver. To be effective, the message must be understood by the receiver on the sender's terms. The instrument used to convey the message is the medium, and the medium is often as important as the content of the message. Today, someone with a message to convey can select from a wide variety of media to aid in the effective delivery of their particular message. Media have been employed as communications aids since the time of Moses. When …

A Study Of Kindergarten Attendance Patterns, Clark William Goltz Jan 1983

A Study Of Kindergarten Attendance Patterns, Clark William Goltz

Graduate Research Papers

In 1956 the first kindergarten was established in the city of Watertown, Wisconsin by Margarethe Meyer Schurz, a disciple of Friedrich Froebel. (Cutright, 1981) The kindergarten and kindergarten curriculum were designed by Froebel in Germany in the 1830's and 1840's. The original kindergarten concept was established for preschoolers three to seven years old. Smith (1971) states that the kindergarten was a system of intellectual, moral and physical education, which reflected pedagogical principles considered foolish and extreme in the middle of the 19th century, namely the significance of play and the need to base the curriculum on the child's interest and …

Personal Construct Theory And The Reconstruction Of Teacher Education, Colin Symes Jan 1983

Personal Construct Theory And The Reconstruction Of Teacher Education, Colin Symes

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The preparation of teachers, earnest enterprise though it is, is fraught with inadequacies. Many of these stem from the ill-defined nature of the enterprise itself. The goal of getting fledgling teachers into the classroom has taken many guises over the years, as befits an enterprise somewhat uncertain of its direction and goals. Courses of teacher education have got longer and the experiences contained within them more varied and academic. The spoils of educational science, if 'science' is the right word, are ever more marshalled into the service of teacher training, with the natural expectation that teachers will be better for …

The Desegregated School And Status Relationships Among Anglo And Hispanic Students, Peter Iadicola, Helen A. Moore Jan 1983

The Desegregated School And Status Relationships Among Anglo And Hispanic Students, Peter Iadicola, Helen A. Moore

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Desgregated elementary school students display verbal and non-verbal indicators of status relationships in a structured, videotaped interaction game. Both Hispanic and Anglo third grade student responses are analyzed across ten schools for a case study of factors that influence racial/ethnic integration outcomes. Variance in student outcomes are primarily explained by socioeconomic dimensions of the schools. These findings suggest that school desegregation poses a contradiction for Hispanic students.

This study was designed to determine if there is a significant difference in selected behaviors of children from divorced/separated families in the parochial school system as compared with children of intact families within the same school system. The relationship was examined by taking into consideration the child's self evaluation of his/her home, school, and peer relationships and teacher's evaluation of school related behavior. Four parochial elementary schools with relatively equal economic status were selected from the metropolitan area of a large mid-western city. Subjects included four hundred eighty-three fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students and their respective homeroom teachers. Sixty-three …
