How Alcohol Influences A Representative Group Of Rural Ninth Grade Students In Iowa, Steven Taylor Brem

Graduate Research Papers

Abuse of alcohol is one of the biggest health and social problems in the United States today. It is estimated that there are more than fifteen million persons whose drinking is associated with serious personal and social problems, including about ten million who are alcoholics. Alcohol use is often associated with crime, poverty, and other social problems. Alcohol also contributes to physical illness, mental illness, and family conflicts. More than fifty percent of the fatal accidents and a high proportion of the injuries occurring on the nation's highways involve drivers or pedestrians who have had too much to drink. (Nusbrunner, …

Effectiveness Of Reality Therapy And Assertive Discipline In Controlling Discipline Disturbances, Steven R. Callison

Graduate Research Papers

Today's general public is scrutinizing its governmental bodies and asking why they are being run in the fashion they are. Attacks against the system seem to come from every direction. Part of the criticism may be generalized hostility towards the government body closest to home, the public school. New school systems incorporating back to basics, humanism, Bible-based curriculums, and home teaching address some of the problems the public perceive.

Trends In Major Field Of Study For Women In Higher Education: A Comparison Of Iowa And National Data From 1972 To 1981, Rena Gayle Daly

Graduate Research Papers

In the last decade, significant changes have occurred in the makeup of the college student population. Prior to the 19701s middle to upper class white males predominated and the student population tended to be academically homogeneous because colleges determined and limited their enrollments on the basis of academic records and test scores. During the 19701s there was an influx of student admissions from all races and socioeconomic groupings. College student populations changed along sexual parameters, too, with women constituting an increasingly larger percentage of the enrollment in higher education. Indeed, women account for most of the enrollment growth in recent …

Barriers Of Cross-Cultural Counseling, Charles L. Davenport Jr. Jan 1983

Barriers Of Cross-Cultural Counseling, Charles L. Davenport Jr.

Graduate Research Papers

In the past two decades, attention has been focused on the topic of cross-cultural counseling. Cross-cultural counseling is defined by Sue (1981), as a counseling relationship in which the participants are different in terms of values, norms, roles, lifestyles, verbal, and nonverbal methods of communicating. Literature in the area of cross-cultural counseling has been a recent occurance in the counseling profession, with professional articles beginning to appear in the journals around the mid 196O 1 s. Before the mid 196O's the counseling profession showed little interest or concern toward the racial, ethnic or minority groups. However, as the journals point …

Employee Fitness Programs: A Study Of The Benefits For Corporate Industry, Jeanne Carlson Duffy Jan 1983

Employee Fitness Programs: A Study Of The Benefits For Corporate Industry, Jeanne Carlson Duffy

Graduate Research Papers

Historically great amounts of energy have been channeled into the education of minds to perform with maximum effort and efficiency. Often these energy expenditures concentrated on singular cognitive processes in order to develop the intellect, and, in doing so, neglected other parts of the whole self. As the concept of the whole or total self became more accepted, educational programs expanded to include a wider variety of curricula: humanities, arts, career education, psychological education, and physical education as well as the traditional "3 r's". Perhaps because of American society's emphasis on graduation (regardless of level) as an end (rather than …

A Rationale For The Implementation Of A Student Employment Grievance System, Judith Decker

Graduate Research Papers

The reason for the study of the student employment grievance system was to develop a supported rationale for implementing a student employment grivance [sic] system. Factors needing to be considered were the passage of pertinent student rights legislation, the paralleled development of organized labor-management relations, and the increased job dissatisfaction experienced by student employees. The study will include becoming familiar with the uniqueness of student employees as a population, identifying the more common causes of grievances, becoming more knowledgeable of the necessary counseling skills to effectively facilitate a grievance system, examining the evolution of the existing University of Northern Iowa's …

Seven Variables Influencing Life Satisfaction Of The Aged, Pamela A. Galbraith Jan 1983

Seven Variables Influencing Life Satisfaction Of The Aged, Pamela A. Galbraith

Graduate Research Papers

This paper deals with the topic of life satisfaction of the aged, a rapidly growing segment of the population of the United States. The aged are persons found in many groups which constitute our society--racial, economic, education, geographic, political, and sexual. Persons who are considered aged are those who are sixty-five years of age or older. The age of sixty-five can be considered an arbitrary point, since a person does not suddenly become aged. Some persons of sixty-five years are retired, others are not; some may be healthy and active, while others are sickly and inactive; some may be involved, …

One certainty is that there will be change throughout life, and proliferation of choices will likely characterize many aspects of a person's life space. Walz, {1975) emphasizes that an individual will continually be required to make critical life decisions under short time limits with little information.

A Review Of The Literature On Stress And The School Administrator, Judy Green Jan 1983

A Review Of The Literature On Stress And The School Administrator, Judy Green

Graduate Research Papers

One of the most common maladies facing American society today is that of stress and its concomitant physiological and psychological effects. Too often it is actually the work environment that fosters a great deal of this tension and anxiety. Researchers estimate that half of all working people are unhappy with their careers, and that as many as 90 percent may be spending much of their time and energy at jobs that do not help them get any closer to their 'goals in life' (Hunt, 1983, p. 38).

Standardized Achievement Tests And Their Implications For Guidance Counselors, John William Hansen Jan 1983

Standardized Achievement Tests And Their Implications For Guidance Counselors, John William Hansen

Graduate Research Papers

In the last twenty years the general public has challenged the judgment of professional educators regarding the quality of education provided in public schools (Feldt and Forsyth, 1973). At present, the public is demonstrating an interest in knowing how well students are mastering important academic content and skills. Reassurances that educational expenditures are worthwhile are no longer being accepted in the absence of factual evidence. As a result, there has been increased attention given to the problem of the evaluation of student performance in educational programs.

The Newly Unemployed And The Role Of The Comprehensive Employment And Training Program Manpower Specialist I (Msi), Kathleen Cohea Harper

Graduate Research Papers

Unemployment has become an increasing national and local concern. Many people are having to face the prospect of never returning to their old jobs. What employment means and the extent and effects of unemployment were researched in the literature. This research focused on the "newly unemployed"--e.g. white, older (45 years or more of age), married males who have never before experienced the problems and frustrations of long-term unemployment. This specific group was chosen for research because they are a departure from those traditionally seen in the Black Hawk County Comprehensive Employment and Training Program (CETP). The problems relating to their …

Teaching Self-Care Skills To The Mentally Retarded, Carl R. Heilman Jan 1983

Teaching Self-Care Skills To The Mentally Retarded, Carl R. Heilman

Graduate Research Papers

A great deal of research in behavior modification has been devoted to the subject of training the profoundly, severely, and moderately retarded in self-care skills. Training self-care skills includes toileting, dressing, and eating; its goal is that retarded individuals will independently toilet, clothe, and feed themselves. The goal of this paper will be to synthesize through literature review, the multitude of information on self-care skills training into a clear account of what has been accomplished in this area, and what weaknesses remain. The literature review will focus on research conducted in institutions housing profoundly, severely, and moderately retarded populations of …

A Post-Secondary Curriculum Guide For Teaching Word Processing With Microcomputers, Charles Bruce Houlton Jan 1983

A Post-Secondary Curriculum Guide For Teaching Word Processing With Microcomputers, Charles Bruce Houlton

Graduate Research Papers

In an attempt to deal with the paperwork explosion occurring in business offices, administrative management has developed the concept of word processing as a means of increasing office efficiency. In business education departments of educational institutions "word processing" has become a confusing term. Too often it is use solely as a synonym for certain types of electronic equipment. According to Frank (10:22) it is the responsibility of educators to instill into the students the idea of a process and a procedure. Word processing is the application of it to the office. Modern technology has been applied to every other facet …

An Inquiry Into The Activity And Traditional Methods Of Teaching Science And Their Effects Upon Sixth Grade Students' Content Learning, Critical Thinking Ability, And Attitude Toward Science, Jane Mcandrews Jan 1983

An Inquiry Into The Activity And Traditional Methods Of Teaching Science And Their Effects Upon Sixth Grade Students' Content Learning, Critical Thinking Ability, And Attitude Toward Science, Jane Mcandrews

Graduate Research Papers

The identification of factors which increase science achievement and interest among students is a topic of renewed consideration among researchers. Today educators and societal leaders are deeply concerned that the schools are not producing future scientists, engineers, and a citizenry at large who will be able to deal capably and creatively with a high-technology, post-industrial era in American society. Concomitant with this new technological age are the increasingly critical dilemmas of energy production and use, environmental degradation, world food shortage, and the threat of nuclear annihilation. These problems seem to make the need for a scientifically literate public as well …

Volunteerism In The Elementary Schools, Katherine Hill Meaney Jan 1983

Volunteerism In The Elementary Schools, Katherine Hill Meaney

Graduate Research Papers

Schools have turned to the oldest tradition of America by looking at the use of volunteers in our schools. Some anthropologists have suggested that voluntary associations have become more common and significant as society has advanced, but we can trace volunteerism back to 8000 B.C. Soaring cost of education at all levels both state and local is climbing. The cost of educating our young is rising daily. There is a rise in salaries for teachers; believed to be rightfully claimed. There is also increasing pressure to upgrade the duties of certified teachers. Demands are greater on the teacher. Demands are …

A Study Of The Effect Of The Career Information System Of Iowa On The Perceived Needs Of 10th Grade Students, Stephen Robert Milder

Graduate Research Papers

In 1971, the U.S. Commissioner of Education, Sidney P. Marland, announced that a new program sponsored by his department would combine college preparatory, vocational, and general education into one area called career education (Smith, 1975). This announcement marked a new federal push for career development in the nation's public schools. In 1978, Congress assumed an even greater role by passing the Career Education Incentive Act. This act provided matching federal funds to states for systems to teach young people what they need to know to enter careers (Stone, 1978). By 1981, career education had become part of classroom activities in …

Identification Of College Student Dropout Characteristics And Retention Strategies, Debra J. Albrecht Jan 1983

Identification Of College Student Dropout Characteristics And Retention Strategies, Debra J. Albrecht

Graduate Research Papers

During the 1960s and 1970s there were two primary reasons why an institution had limited concern with the retention of its students: (1) there were more students than its faculty or facilities could handle. If a number of students did not continue to enroll, it was not a problem since many other students were waiting to take their place. (2) This time period involved a philosophical interpretation of equal education opportunity and the maintenance of academic standards. Many felt they fulfilled obligations for equal educational opportunity if students had easy access to institutions. There was also an assumption that academic …
